Definitions

  • This invention relates to a barrel safety means for fuses, and has for its object to utilise for the safety device the force of acceleration of the projectile.
  • the barrel safety device resides substantially in the fact that an element, which secures the firing pin in indirect fashion, is moved by the action of the force of acceleration into a position, only in which a releasing action of the said element is able to take place.
  • the arrangement is preferably Vsuch that under the action of the force of acceleration the said element lags behind in relation to the movement of the projectile, and is not advanced to initiate the releasing action until the force of acceleration has ceased.
  • the said element is constructed as a spring-pressed bolt, which co-operates with a slide member blocking the path of the firing pin in the secured position.
  • the bolt possesses a disc, which is mounted in sliding fashion and rests in a corresponding recess in the slide. This disc rests on a fixed basefwhile in the other direction it is free, so that upon the movement of the bolt towards the rear under the force of acceleration it remains in the slide, but upon the forward movement of the bolt is also caused to be advanced. The slide member thus released is then able to move under the action of centrifugal or spring force out of the path of the ring pin.
  • An arrangement of this kind has the advantage that the element securing the flring pin in indirect fashion is itself secured, not by another part but by reason of its position, from which the same can only be moved by the force of acceleration.
  • Figs. 1 and 2 are cross-sections through the device according to the invention, Fig. 1 in the stationary and secured position of the parts and Fig. 2 in the position in which the parts in which they are acted upon by the force of acceleration.
  • Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device according to Fig. 1,
  • Fig. 5 being a plan view of Fig. 4.
  • a bolt d acted upon by a spring e which presses the bolt in the direction of movement of the projectile against a Vstop which is preferably constitutedby the plate g bearing the slide.
  • a disc or ring c which is held resiliently so as to be shiftable thereon. This ring rests in a suitable recess bl in the slide b, whereby the slide is held against the action of a spring f in the position in which the firing pin is secured.
  • the slide is also furnished with two openings, one for the passage of the-ring pin andthe other to,A receive the safety bolt d when the slide is movedv into the position of release.
  • a safety mechanism comprising a slide mounted in a plane generally at a right angle to said ring pin so that in one position it will intercept movement of the iring pin to ring position, a spring mounted to force said slide into non-intercepting position, a bolt mounted for movement parallel to the direction of the axis of the projectile, a device frictionally srippiilsqsaid bolt adjacent one end thereof and normally positioned thereon to-block movement of said slide to its non-intercepting position and thereby prevent operation of said firing pin, and spring means acting on said bolt adjacent the other end thereof in a manner to hold said bolt with the device in normal blocking position, said safety mechanism being so pro-'- portioned and arranged that nring of said projectile will cause setback of 4said bolt against action of the spring acting thereon and slippageof said device on said bolt whereby when acceleration of said projectile ceases said spring will force the bolt forward and carry said device out of blocking engagement with said slide and permit said slide
  • a safety mechanism comprising a slide mounted in a plane generally at a right angle to said firing pin so that in one position it will intercept movement of the firing pin to firing position, a bolt mounted for movement parallel to the direction of the axis of the projectile, a device frictionally gripping said bolt adjacent one end thereof and normally positioned thereon to block movement of said slide to its non-intercepting position and thereby prevent operation of said firing pin, and
  • a barrel safety device fora fuse of projectiles having a firing pin comprising a base member, a safety slide slidable on the member and memos having two openings therein, a bolt slidable in the base member, a locking member .mounted slidably on the bolt and normally extending into the slide in one of the openings to lock the slide from movement so that the nring pin contacts the slide and is prevented from movement. and means cooperating with the bolt which stores energy upon iiring of the' projectile but when the l projectile ceases to accelerate the energy in the means forces the bolt to slide in the base member to release the locking member so that the firing pin may penetrate through the other opening inthe sllde.
  • a barrel safety device for a fuse comprising a plate. a safety slide slidable on the plate, a bolt, a locking member slidably mounted with friction on the bolt and extending into the slide to normally lock the slide from movement when the locking member is adjacent the plate, and a spring for the bolt, said locking member when the spring is energized by a backward movement of the bolt away from the slide being stationary but when the bolt moves in a forward direction toward the slide the member moves with the bolt to release the slide.
  • a barrel safety device in which the locking member is in the form of a ring on the b'olt which has a tight fit thereon so part into which the bolt fits when the slide is released on forward movement of the bolt.
  • a barrel safety device in which the safety slide is provided with an opening through which a firing pin may pass after the slide has moved upon its release by the bolt and locking member.
