UNITnDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER H. TUNIS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,711, dated J une 17, 1879; application filed May 23, 1879. c
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. TUNIS, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as 'follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the box 5 Fig. 2, a plan view ot' the cover-blank, and Fig. 3 a similar view of the blank forming the body ot the box.
The object of my invention is to furnish a box calling for a minimum expenditure of materialinits construction, and possessing; a maximum of power to resist a crushin gforce laterally applied, the said ends being attained by cutting the blanks for box and cover in the shapes shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
An extensive demand exists for a cheap and strong box for containing ladies dresses `or other articles of clothing, as the same, if packed in bulk, become creased, and their salability and appearance are impaired.
Boxes for the purpose named have heretofore generally been constructed in the ordinary manner, except that the cover-a-nge was l made of a Width equal to the depth of the box,
thereby practically doubling the strength of the Walls. 4
By constructing the box as hereinafter described I secure with the same expenditure of material a Jtreble strength of the walls, While materially lessening in other respects the cost of producing the box, and securing important advantages which Will at once be apparent.
In the drawings, A represents the blank for the body ofthe box cut to the shape shown in Fig. 3, and creased so as to bend on the lines a" a, the parts a a being of equal Width, and constituting the Walls of the box.
The cover-blank B is of the same size as the parts b b constituting the cover-flange. y Perforations d d d d!" are formed in the sides b' and corners b", and are adapted to register when the ends and sides are folded at right angles to the cover and the corners bent over the sides.
A cord or tape, C, is led through the holes as shown-viz., through d d. cl" rl" in the ordernamed-thence acrossthe back ofthe cover, and through the corresponding holes 011 the other side in reverse order.
The parts are applied together as follows:
The walls of the box A being bent up at right angles, the cover B is laid thereon, and its sides are folded against the walls of the box.
It will be observed that the box has treble 4 walls at its corners, securing a degree ot' strength practically equal to that which would arise from treble walls all around, and that this strength is due to the pieces b, which in ordinary boxes `are cut to Waste.
The box, moreover, will fold out flata point of great moment to the manufacturer as well as to the consumer.
The boxes in stock occupy but little space, are readily and expeditiously put together, and the tapes afford perfect immunity against all danger of the parts becoming accidentally detached. A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with thebodyA, the cover B, having perforated sides and corners, and tapes or cords C, rove through the said perforations, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
