2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed July 23, 1937 Q J J) Patented July 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a rotary razor driven by electric power, the general object of the invention being to provide a holder having means for holding a blade with its edges diverging to a member which has angle slots therein for receiving the beard, the edges of said slots and the blade producing a shearing cut.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter full described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings Wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved razor.
Figure 2 is a view looking toward the head end thereof.
Figure 3 is a view of a blade used with the device.
Figure 4 is a view looking toward the blade carrying end of the device, wtih the cup-shaped member removed.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device.
Figure 6 is a view of the hollow shaft.
Figure 7 is a view of the inner shaft.
Figure 8 is a view, partly in section, of the drive shaft.
Figure 9 is a section on line 99 of Figure 5.
As shown in these views, the body of the device includes the parts I and 2, which are threaded together, the part I having a chamber 3 therein and the part 2 having a longitudinally extending bore passing therethrough in which is rotatably arranged the hollow shaft 4 by the antifriction bearings 5. This hollow shaft is formed with an enlarged or elongated transversely extending head 6 havinga substantially V-shaped recess 1 therein and a shaft 8 passes through the hollow shaft 4 and has a beveled elongated head 9 thereon for fitting in the recess 1 when the shaft 8 is placed in the shaft 4. A nut I0 is threaded on the inner end of the shaft 4 to hold the same in place, and the inner end of the shaft 8 has a reduced threaded part II terminating in the square part l2. A nut I3 is threaded on the part II and the square part l2 fits in a similar shaped socket M in the'end of the shaft I5 which extends into the chamber 3 through the part I, and this shaft is connected to an electric motor or the like. However, an electric motor may be carried by the part I and suitably connected with the end of the shaft 8 to drive the two shafts 4 and 8.
A flexible blade, such as that shown at IS in Figure 3, is adapted to be held between the heads 9 and 6 of the shafts 8 and 4, and as will be seen from Figure 5, when the blade is so held, it will assume a substantially V-shaped form. Projections 9' are carried by the head 9 and pass through holes 6 in the head 6. These projections also pass through holes H5 in the blade IS. A cap I! is threaded on the enlarged outer end 2' of the part 2 and is held in adjusted position by the lock nut I8. The cap has a flat outer face of circular shape with a short beveled part I9 at its circumference and an annular row of slots 20 is formed in the periphery of the flat part of the cap and extends into the beveled part, these slots being angularly arranged so that their edges will produce with the edges of the blade IS, a draw out on the hairs extending through the slots.
As will be seen, the device uses a commercial safety razor blade and thus utilizes a cutting edge instead of a clipping edge, and this results in a cleaner and faster shave. The slots should be milled at the most favorable angle for eflicient cutting, it being understood that the cap is adjusted on the head 2 until it makes sufiicient contact with the blade to produce an eflicient cutting action. 30
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A razor of the class described comprising a body, a rotary shaft journaled in the body, means for attaching a normally flat double edge blade to the outer end of the shaft, said means flexing the blade into substantially V-shape in cross section throughout the length of" the blade and a cap adjustably connected with the body and having a flat outer face having angle slots therein for producing with the cutting edges ofthe blade a shearing cut.
2. A razor of the class described comprising body, a hollow shaft journaled therein and having one end extending from one end of the body, "a head on said end of the shaft having a substantially V-shaped recess therein, a second shaft passing through the hollow shaft, said second shaft having a beveled head thereon fitting in the recess, the two heads acting to clamp a blade between them with the blade assuming a cap threaded on that end of the body from which the head of the first shaft projects, said can having a fiat central portion over the inner face of which the blade operates, and said cap having an annular row'of angle slots at its periphery.
3. A razor of the class described comprising a body, a hollow shaft journaled therein and having one end extending from one end of the body, a head on said end of the shaft having a substantially v-shaped recess therein, a second shaft aieaoat passing through the hollow shaft, said second shait having a beveled head thereon fitting in the recess, the two heads acting to clamp a blade between them with the blade assuming a substantially \l-shape, means for holding the shafts in place, means for rotating the shafts, a cap threaded on that end of the body from which the head of the first shaft projects, said cap having a fiat central portion over the inner face of which the blade operates, said cap having an annular row of angle slots at its periphery, the cap having a beveled part connecting its rim to the fiat part and the slots extending into said beveled part.
