Description

July 11,1939. RAISLER 2,166,021
ASHTRAY Filed May 28, 1938 /0 Inventor 4 a 3 4 J. Badly/6r A Etomeys Patented July 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,168,021 Asn'rnAY John Raisler, Beach, N. Dak. Application May 2a, 1938, Serial No. 210,732
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in ash trays and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying novel means through the medium of which cigarettes may be expeditiously extinguished in a convenient and highly satisfactory manner.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an ash tray and cigarette extinguisher of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, compact, attractive I in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
and wherein: v
Figure 1 is a top plan view of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a tray in the form of a pan or receptacle which is designated generally.by the reference numeral l. The tray ,I includes a bottom 2' and walls 3. As shown to advantage in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the tray l is substantially oval in plan. v
Firmly secured in any suitable manner on one of the side walls 3 of the tray I is an angular bracket Q. Mounted on the bracket 4 is an exting'uisher which is designated generally by the reference numeral 5.
The extinguisher 5 is formed from a single piece of suitable resilient metal and includes a pair of normally diverging jaws 6 and! which are connected at one end by a resilient loop 8.
The jaw l is securedto the bracket 4 by elements 9 on said bracket. The jaw I has formed therein at an intermediate point an opening [0 which receives a lug I I which is struck from the jaw 6.
It is thought that the manner of usingthe device will be readily apparent from a considerationof the foregoing. When a cigarette is to be extinguished, the lighted end thereof is inserted between the jaws 6 and, 'l on the inwardly projecting lug or lip II. The jaws 8 and I are-then closed by pressing the free end portions thereof together between the thumb and index finger of one hand, thus squeezing and extinguishing the lighted end of the cigarette. When the jaws 6 and I are released, the extinguished cigarette r drops into the tray I. The lug or lip II is adapted to enter the opening l0, thus preventing said lug or lip from interfering with theclosing of the jaws 6 and I. The element H greatly facilitates proper positioning of the lighted end portion of 'the cigarette between the resilient jaws 6 and I.
It is believed that the many advantages of an ash tray and extinguisher constructed in accordance with the present invention will bereadily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within-the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A cigarette extinguisher comprising a substantially V-shaped, resilient member, the legs of said member constituting a bar of coacting, divering jaws for the reception of a cigarette therebetween, and a lug struck inwardly from an intermediate portion of one of said jaws for receiving and supporting the cigarette, the other of said jaws having an opening therein for the reception of the lug'when the jaws are closed on the cigarette.
