INVE. NTO R ATTORNEY Patented July 11, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,166,010 SUSPENSORY GARMENT Thomas La Maida, University Heights, Ohio Application November 15, 1937, Serial No. 174,538
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in wearing apparel or garments, and more particularly, to personal wear garments individually adaptable for use by men. In a general way, this invention relates to the type of combination suspensory garments disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,985,507 issued to me on December 25, 1934.
I have discovered, that by reconstructing the article disclosed in the above patent, toinclude certain new features, that certain new and useful improvements are presented over the above patent, as hereinafter disclosed.
Therefore, objects of my present invention are, to provide a suspensory garment characterized by the advantages of simplicity and low cost of construction, and providing a scientifically designed garment for men, affording the maximum comfort and ease and support in wearing, and inhibiting creeping or binding of the garment on the wearer.
Another object is to provide a construction of the class described, which is snug fitting and comfortable under all conditions and may be embodied in various forms.
Another object is to provide a suspensory which is comfortable and effective during all physical activities of the wearer.
Other and further objects of my invention will appear during the course of the following description.
In. the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blanks from which I my invention is assembled,
Fig. 2 illustrates a partial assembly of the blanks, shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a front view of the assembled garment,
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the assembled garment, while Fig. 5 is a side view of the assembled garment.
The garment disclosed herein is adapted to be manufactured from any suitable material, the blanks from which it is assembled being laid out in Fig. 1, wherein the numeral I I represents front crotch members having cooperating inner longitudinal edge portions aa, adapted to be overlapped and sewn together as shown in Fig. 2, outer longitudinal edge portions bb upper transverse edge portions 0-0, and lower convex edge portions dd.
Abdominal engaging members I2, adapted to be disposed around the abdomen of the wearer, are provided with curved edge portions e-e, inner vertical edges f]', outer vertical edges g-g, lower leg encircling edges hh, while top edges i-z' are cut out to form notches I3 adapted to be formed into pleats in the finished garment.
Rear crotch members I4, forming a part of the back portion of the completed garment, are provided with cooperating inner longitudinal edge portions ;iy', curved outer edges kk, lower outer edge portions LL, lower edge portions 1nm, while the upper ends are cut to form tabs I5 having convex forward edges.
In assembling the blanks, above illustrated, into a finished garment the tabs I5, shown at the upper end of the rear crotch members I4 in Fig. l, are united to the lower edge portions dd of the front crotch members II as shown in Fig. 2, the inner longitudinal edge portions 7'9' of the rear crotch members I4 and a part of the inner longitudinal edge portions 0-11 of front crotch members II being first united. The two rear crotch members I4 are preferably bias cut, in order to provide sufficient stretching of the material to allow compensative yielding in conformity to active body movements, thus providing great comfort for the wearer at these parts, which form a protruding pouch I6, shown in Figs. 3 and 5, constituting a suspensory means.
The abdominal engaging members I2 are then assembled to the crotch parts, above described, in
such a manner that the outer edge portions L-L of the rear crotch members I4 engage the edges gg of the abdominal encircling members I2, as shown in Fig. 4 with the leg encircling edges h-h doubled back and united to the lower part of the edges gg, while outer edge portions 17-1) of front crotch members II are united to curved edge portions ee of abdominal engaging members, as shown in Fig. 3. If desired a top belt means II, having the top edges of front crotch member II, rear crotch members I4, and abdominal encircling members I2 united thereto, may be provided, while ties I8, fastened to the belt means I1 permit the garment to be taken in at the waistline and tied around the loins of the wearer, in order to provide uplifting action for the suspensory feature of the garment.
The
notches I3 at the top of the abdominal encircling members I2 permit the material to be formed into pleats I9, permitting the garment to conform to the contour of the wearers body.
The garment above described, thus provides a comfortable pouch I6 adapted to conform to the contour of a male wearer, the amount of uplifting or suspensory effect being controlled by regulating the position and tension of the garment on the wearer by means of the ties I8.
By eliminating cross ties between the front and rear crotch members, as provided in this construction, greater comfort and utility are achieved due to the elimination of such ties which frequently cause chafing, irritation and discomfort, at the same time this construction permits the manufacturing of such garment at a cost relatively much lower, than the cost of a garment having a cross tie, due to the saving of time and material. The garment, herein illustrated, may be manufactured of various materials, and it may be found desirable to make the entire garment from the conventional materials, thus providing a heat:
The position and arand attractive garment. rangement of the pouch l6 provides yielding compensating support where desired, and prevents slacking and lack of protection and support otherwise.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the invention disclosed herein may be variously changed, used or modified, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and that the embodiment of my invention, herein disclosed, is illustrative and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim: I
1. A bifurcated suspensory garment comprising a pair of front crotch members, a pair. of rear crotch members, and a pair of abdominal members forencircling the legs and covering the abdomen of the wearer, the pair of front crotch members having inner longitudinal edges which are secured together for a portion of their lengths at the lower portions thereof, the rear crotch members being secured together throughout their inner edges and having constricted intermediate sections and tab portions at their front ends, which tab portions are secured to the lower adjacent edges of the front crotch members, the position and arrangement of the cooperating front crotch members and rear crotch member tab portions providing a suspensory pouch for the wearer, the abdominal members being provided with lower portions of sufi'icient length to encircle a leg of the wearer and having the inner edges of such portions secured to the lower part of the outer edges of the respective abdominal members for that purpose, the upper parts of the said last-mentioned outer edges being secured to respectively adjacentouter edge portions of the rear crotch members, and said abdominal members having their inner edges cut diagonally to provide upwardly tapering portions which are secured at their inner edges to the outer edges of the front crotch members and the remaining portions of the outer edges of the rear crotch members, whereby adjustment 'of the upper edge or waistline of the completed garment will control the supporting effect of the pouch.
