This invention relates to a paper holder or dispensing device, and relates more particularly to a holder for toilet paper, paper toweling, etc. A general object of this invention is to provide a 5 simple, practical holder for rolled paper that is easy and convenient to operate and that promotes the economical use of the paper.
Another object of this invention is to provide a holder for roll paper that supports the roll in 10 such a manner that the paper may be easily and conveniently obtained and that limits the amount of paper that may be removed at one operation, thereby preventing or lessening the wasteful use of the paper.
15 Another object of the invention is to provide a holder for roll paper in which the roll supporting spindle automatically returns to its normal or initial position after each operation.
An important object of this invention is to pro- 20 vide a paper holder of the character mentioned embodying means for limiting the amount of paper removed at each operation, which means is made operative or is conditioned for operation by arranging a paper roll having a core of particular construction on the spindle of the holder in a given manner.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paper holder of the character mentioned, in
which the limiting means or stop means is concealed and inaccessible when the paper roll is in place and, therefore, cannot be tampered with.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paper holder of the character mentioned in which a part or element of the stop means and the core of the paper roll cooperate to lock the roll and its core against undesirable turning on the spindle.
Another object of this invention is to provide a paper holder of the character mentioned in which 40 the means for limiting the turning of the roll and the removal of the paper is releasable and may or may not be employed or made operative at the option of the person supplying the paper.
In accordance with the present invention the stop means for limiting the amount of paper re moved at each operation may be made operative or may be set for operation when the holder is supplied with paper by providing a roll of paper having a core of a given construction and by ar- 54) ranging said core on the spindle in a given manner or, if desired, the stop means may be rendered inoperative by arranging said core in a different position on the spindle or by supplying the device with a roll of paper having a core of 55 typical construction.
A further object of this invention is to provide a paper holder of the character mentioned in which a new or replacement roll of paper may be easily and quickly arranged on the spindle.
The various objects and features of my invention will be fully understood from the following detailed description of a typical preferred form and application of my invention, throughout which description reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in'which:

8 illustrating the manner in which the stop lever clears the stop.
The improved paper holder provided by this invention includes, generally, a body It], a spindle l I rotatably carried by the body [0 and provided to receive and carry a paper roll R and its core C, and releasable stop means i? for limiting turning of the spindle l to limit the amount of paper received at each operation.
The body ll] of the device or holder may be varied in construction without departing from the broader aspects of the invention. In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawings the body l0 includes a base 13 and two spaced arms I4 and i5 projecting laterally or outwardly from the base I3. The base 13 is adapted to be secured to a vertical support [6 by screws IT, or the like, to have its front face in a substantially vertical plane. The arms l4 and I5 project forwardly from the base I3 and in the case illustrated the arms are substantially horizontal. The spaced arms I4 and i5 are rigidly and permanently secured to the base l3. In practice the arms. 14 and I5 may be hollow or tubular Gil sheet metal parts, as illustrated. An opening it is provided in the inner side of the arm I l adjacent its outer end. A notch I9 is provided in the outer end of the arm I4 and communicates with its opening I8. The inner side of the arm I5 is provided with an opening 23 directly opposing or horizontally aligned with the opening I8.
The spindle I I is normally turnably supported between the arms I4 and I5 of the body It] and is provided to support the roll R so that the paper of the roll may be easily unreeled or removed therefrom. The spindle II is shaped and proportioned so that the core C of the paper roll R may be slid onto it from one end. Accordingly,
the spindle II is a generally cylindrical elongate member proportioned to be received in the opening of the tubular core C. An annular radially projecting flange 2I is provided on one end of the spindle II to limit the movement of the roll R and core on the spindle II and to assist in positioning them on the spindle. A central longitudinal opening 22 is provided in the end portion of the spindle II provided with the flange 2I and the opening rotatably receives a. pin or shaft 23. The spindle II is held against longitudinal movement on the shaft 23. In the particular arrangement illustrated in the drawings the shaft 23 has a reduced inner end portion 24 received in an opening 25 in an internal web 26 of the spindle II. A shoulder 21 on the shaft 23 at one end of its reduced portion 24 cooperates with one side of the web 26 and a washer 28 keyed or otherwise secured on the shaft portion 24 cooperates with the other side of the web 26. The shoulder 21 and the washer 28 cooperating with the web 26 serve to prevent longitudinal movement of the spindle II with respect to the shaft 23.
In accordance with the invention the shaft 23 is connected with the arm I4 to rotatably support one end portion of the spindle II. The shaft 23 is connected with the arm I4 in such a manner that the spindle II may be pivoted or swung outwardly to facilitate the arrangement of the roll R on the spindle. The shaft 23 projects from the end of the spindle H and is received in the opening I8 in the arm I4. A pivot pin 29 is secured to the upper and lower walls of the tubular arm I4 and passes through a transverse opening 30 in the shaft 23 to pivotally connect the shaft 23 and the spindle I I with the arm I4. The pin 29 of course holds the shaft 23 against rotation. The pin 29 and the opening 30 are preferably substantially vertical so that the spindle II may be pivoted about a substantially vertical axis. The above described notch I9 in the arm I4 receives the shaft 23 when the spindle I I is pivoted outwardly or away from the body II! to receive a new or replacement roll R.
The spindle II is releasably and rotatably supported on the outer portion of the body arm I5. A central hub 3! projects from the end of the spindle II adjacent the arm I and a central longitudinal opening 32 extends through the hub 3I and the end portion of the spindle II. A pin 33 is shiftably carried in the opening 32 and is adapted to project beyond the outer end of the hub 3I. The projecting portion of the pin 33 is rotatably received in the opening 29 of the arm I5 to rotatably support the spindle II on the arm. The pin 33 is retractable from the opening 26 to release the spindle I I from the arm I5 so that the spindle may be pivoted outwardly on the pivot pin 29 to allow a replacement roll R to be readily arranged on it. A knob 34 is secured to the inner end of the pin 33 to facilitate its retraction from the opening 20. Spring means is provided for normally holding the pin 33 in cooperation with the opening 20. A helical spring 35 surrounds the pin 33 and has one end bearing against an internal web 36 of the spindle II. The other end of the spring 35 bears against a washer 3'! which in turn engages against a shoulder 38 of the spindle II. The washer 31 is fixed or secured to the pin 33 and the spring 35 bearing against the washer 3i urges the pin 33 outwardly to normally maintain the pin in cooperation with the opening 20 in the arm I5. The washer 31 engaging against the shoulder 38 limits the outward movement of the pin 33.
A groove 38 having an inclined bottom Wall is provided in the outer end of the arm I5 and the outer end of the pin 33 is preferably rounded or beveled to cooperate with the groove 38. When a new or replacement roll R of paper has been arranged on the spindle II the spindle may be swung inwardly to engage the end of the pin 33 in the groove 38. The inclined wall of the groove 38 causes retraction of the spring urged pin 33 permitting further inward movement of the spindle II so that the pin may snap into the opening 20. It will be noted that when the roll R is on the spindle II and the pin 33 is latched in the opening 29, as just described, the knob 34 and the pin 33 are inaccessible so that the pin cannot retracted.
It is a feature of the invention that the roll supporting spindle II automatically returns to its normal position after a section or piece of paper has been unreeled from the roll R and detached from the roll. In the preferred form of the invention illustrated in the drawings the means for effecting this automatic return of the spindle II is a gravity means incorporated in or forming a part of the spindle II. The spindle II is dynamically eccentric to automatically return by gravity to a rotative position where its longitudinal center of gravity is below its axis of rotation. The spindle II is preferably, though not necessarily, a casting of metal or other material of relatively high specific gravity. When in the nature of a casting the spindle II is shaped or formed to be dynamically eccentric, as just described. In the particular structure illustrated the spindle II is formed or provided with two relatively large notches 49 and M which extend into the spindle from one side or peripheral portion to a plane adjacent but spaced from the opposite side of the spindle, leaving an axial or longitudinally extending web or bridge 42 which extends between and connects the opposite end portions of the spindle. The notches 49 and 4! are preferably of substantial depth and length so that the longitudinal bridge 42 constitutes a weight that is eccentric relative to the axis of turning of the spindle and so that the center of gravity of the rotatable spindle II is spaced some distance from its axis of rotation. In practice the bridge 42 has sufiicient weight to assure the return of the spindle I I to its normal rotative position at the end of each operation. The notches 49 and ii are separated by a substantially central web 43 whose peripheral surface provides a central bearing for the core 0 of the roll R. The notches 49 and M are spaced from the adjacent ends of the spindle I I so that the spindle has peripheral surfaces at its ends for supporting the core C of the roll R. The shoulder 38 mentioned above is an end wall of the notch 40 and the previously mentioned webs 26 and 36 project from the inner or bottom walls of the notches ii and 40, respectively.
The roll R of paper illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, of the drawings, is wound upon the spool or tubular core C which may be formed of paper, cardboard, or the like. The core C is cylindrical and, as described above, is adapted to be slipped on the spindle II from one end when the spindle is released from the arm I 5. The core C carrying the roll R is intended to be arranged on the spindle H to have one end bear against the flange 2i which limits the endwise movement of the roll on the spindle. The core C is characterized by the provision of one or more lateral or radial openings 45. In the case illustrated in the drawings the core C has one opening 5 which is spaced substantially midway between its ends. The opening may be rectangular and is preferably elongate and located with its major axis extending axially of the core 0.
The means 82 is provided to limit turning of the spindle ii and thereby limit the amount of paper that may be unreeled and removed from the roll R at one operation. In accordance with the invention. the stop means i2 is releasable or capable of being held inoperative so that the person supplying the holder with paper may or may not condition the means I2 for operation. For example, where the paper holder is installed in a public place it may be desirable to condition the stop means 52 to limit the turning of the spindle ii and thus prevent or lessen the unnecessary wasteful use of the paper, and when the holder is in use in other situations, for example, in a residence, it may be desirable to maintain the means l2 released. In the application of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, of the drawings the means I2 is shown conditioned for operation to limit turning of the spindle ill and thereby limit the amount of paper that may be unreeled from the roll R at one operation, while in Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, of the drawings the means I! is illustrated in a released or inoperative condition where the spindle H is free for unlimited rotation.
The stop means l2 includes a stop 46 on a non-rotatable part of the holder. In the particular construction illustrated in the drawings the stop $6 is in the nature of a pin or rivet secured to the shaft 23. The stop 46 may be riveted or fixed in a transverse opening 41 in the shaft to project radially from the shaft. The stop it may be provided at various or different rotative positions on the shaft 23. In the case il ustrated the stop 46 projects downwardly from lower side of the shaft 23.
The stop means l2 further includes an element turnable with the spindle II and adapted to the stop A16 to limit turning of the spindle. In the preferred form of the invention this element is the nature of a pivoted lever 18. A longitudinal slot 49 is provided in the weight bridge Q2 of the spindle H and one end portion of the lever 43 is secured in the slot. A p 1 i is carried by the bridge 52 and passes through a transverse opening in the lever 58 to pivotally connect the lever to the spindle l l. The lever 38 has a lateral portion Mi extending through the notch M and an outer end portion 5% projecting from the end of the lateral portion 5 3 The end portion 56 of the lever 48 passes through notches 52 and 53, respectively, in
the web 26 and the adjacent end portion of the spindle H and the lever portion 5! is adapted to lie substantially parallel with the shaft 23. The outer end portion 5| of the lever ts is adapted to engage against or cooperate with the stop 56 to limit turning of the spindle ii. The end portion SI of the lever 48 is at the opposite side of the axis of rotation of the spindle H from the bridge 42 to be disposed at the upper side of the shaft 23 when the spindle is in its normal position shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings.
Spring means is provided to yieldingly hold the lever 48 in the operative position where its end portion 5| may engage the stop 56 to limit turning of the spindle. A coiled spring 5 1 is set in a socket in the web 43 and bears outwardly against the inner portion of the lever 58 which extends through the slot 49. The spring 56 acting on the lever 48 is adapted to hold the lever in a position where its end portion 5i engages the bottoms of the notches 52 and 53 assuming that the lever is conditioned for operation. The side walls of the notches 52 and 53 are adapted to take lateral thrusts from the lever portion 5!.
A part is provided on the stop lever 45 to cooperate with the opening 55 in the core C of the roll R. This part may be in the nature of a flange or lug 55 on the outer edge of that portion of the lever 33 that extends through the slot as. The lug 55 is located to be received in the opening its in the core C when the roll R is arranged on the spindle in the proper rotative position and has its end engaged against the flange 2!. The lug 55 may be broader than the lever 8 and is shaped to be properly received in the opening 35. The cooperation of the lug 55 with the opening t5 may serve to key the core C and the roll R against turning on the spindle ll. The outer face of the lug 55 inclined outwardly and away from the end of the spindle ll carrying the pin 33 so that the core C of the roll R may be readily slid over the lug when the roll is being arranged on the spindle H. An elongate projection finger or rib 56 is preferably provided on the hub 3! in the same rotative position as the lug 55 to indicate the rotative position of the lug and thereby facilitate the arrangement of the roll R in the proper rotative position on the spindle ll so that the lug is receivable in the opening 35. The spring 54 acting on the lever 458 urges the lug 55 outwardly and when the roll R is moved to the proper position on the spindle ii the lug 5 5 snap-s into the opening 65. When the lug on the lever ifi is received in the opening d5, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the lever 53 assumes a position where its outer end portion iii is adapted to engage the stop 46 to limit turning of the spindle H and the roll R.
Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, of the drawings illustrate a use or application of the invention in which the stop means i2 is maintained released or inoperative to permit free rotation of the spindle H and the roll R. In the event that it is desired to hold the stop means it. released a roll R having a core C with. imperforate walls is arranged on the spindle ll. When the core C is in position on the spindle l i it holds the lever 48in a position where its portion 5i clears or passes the stop M without engaging the same when the spindle l is rotated. It will be apparent how engagement of the core C with the lug 55 holds the lever 48 in this released position. While I have referred to the core C as being imperforate it is to be understood that the roll R provided with the core C illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, of the drawings, may be arranged in a rotative position where its opening 45 is out of register with the lug 55 so that the core holds the means 82 released if it is desired to use the holder in this condition. The lug 55 of the spring urged lever 48 bearing outwardly against the interior of the core C may assist in preventing rotation of the core and the roll R on the spindle II.
It is believed that the utility and practicability of the paper holder provided by this invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing detailed description. Assuming that the roll R provided with the core C is to be used in the holder, the spindle may be swung to an out position to receive the roll by merely engaging the knob 34 and retracting the pin 33 from the opening 26. This allows the spindle to be hinged or pivoted on the pin 29 to a position where the roll R may be readily slid on the spindle. In arranging the roll R on the spindle the opening 45 in the core C is aligned with the lug 55 and the finger 56 and when the end of the roll R approaches the flange 2| the lug 55 on the spring urged lever 48 automatically moves into the opening 45. This movement of the lug 55 into the opening 45 is accompanied by swinging of the end portion 5| of the lever 48 to a position where it is adapted to engage the stop 46. After the arrangement of the roll R on the spindle the spindle carrying the roll is returned to its operative position where the spring urged pin 33 is received in the opening 2ii. The device is then in condition for operation.
When a user draws down or out on the end portion of the paper extending from the roll R the roll and the spindle turn together. The end portion 5| of the lever 48 comes into engagement with the stop 46 to definitely limit this turning of the roll R and thereby limit the amount of paper that may be unreeled from the roll. When the unreeled paper is torn free and the roll R is freed the roll and the spindle automatically return to their original rotative positions by gravity under the action of the eccentric weight bridge 42 of the spindle II. It is to be observed that the stop means It is entirely concealed and cov ered by the roll R and its core C so that it cannot be tampered with. When the roll R is exhausted the core C may be torn from the spindle II and a replacement roll may be arranged on the spindle, as described above.
When it is desired to employ the paper holder as illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9, inclusive, of the drawings, the roll R is arranged on the spindle H in the same manner as the roll R. In this use, however, the arrangement of the roll R on the spindle automatically retracts the lever 48 to a position where its active end portion 5| is adapted to clear the stop 46 when the spindle turns. It will be apparent that sliding of the core C" on the spindle effects retraction of the lever 48. The core C cooperates with the lug 55 to move the lever 48 to the position illustrated in Figs. 6, '7 and 8 of the drawings where its portion 5| is adapted to clear or pass the lug 46, as shown in Fig. 9, when the roll R and spindle H are turned.
Having described only a typical preferred form and application of my invention, I do not wish to be limited or restricted to the specific details herein set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any variations or modifications that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A holder for a roll of paper having a core comprising, a spindle on which the core of the roll may be arranged, means supporting the spindle for rotation, and means for limiting turning of the spindle including a member permanently carried by the spindle and operable between two positions, one an inoperative position and the other an operative position where it limits turning of the spindle.
2. A holder for a roll of paper having a core comprising, a spindle on which the core of the roll may be arranged, means supporting the spindle for rotation, and releasable means for limiting rotation of the spindle operable to a released position by a core on the spindle.
3. In combination, a roll of paper, a tubular core in the roll, the core having an opening in its wall, a spindle on which the core may be arranged to support the roll to turn therewith, means supporting the spindle for rotation, and shiftable means carried by the spindle and adapted to enter said opening and positioned when entered in the opening to be operative to limit turning of the spindle.
a. In combination, a roll of paper, a tubular core in the roll, the core having an opening in its wall, a spindle on which the core may be arranged to support the roll to turn therewith, means supporting the spindle for rotation, a stop, a shiftable spring urged member turnable with the spindle, and a part on the member adapted to extend into said opening to position the member to engage the stop to limit turning of the spindle.
5. In a device of the character described, support means, a-spindle carried by the support means for rotation, a roll of paper, a tubular core carrying the roll and arranged on the spindle whereby the roll is turnable with the spindle, the core having an opening in its wall, a stop on the support means, a member shiftably connected with the spindle to turn therewith and shiftable between a position where it may engage the stop to limit turning of the spindle and a position where it clears the stop when the spindle is rotated, means urging the member to the first named position, and a part on the member adapted to project from the spindle into said opening when the member is in the said first mentioned position and engaged by the core to hold the memher in the second mentioned position when the opening is out of register with the said part.
6. A device of the character described comprising, a body, a spindle carried by the body for rotation, a roll of paper, a core in said roll of paper arranged on the spindle, said core having a lateral opening, releasable restraining means operable to limit turning of the spindle, and a part operatively associated with the restraining means positioned to be depressed by a core to hold the restraining means released and in normal position when received in said opening to position the restraining means for operation.
'7. A device of the character described comprising, a body, a spindle carried by the body for rotation, a roll of paper, a core in said roll of paper arranged on the spindle, said core having a lateral opening, releasable restraining means operable to limit turning of the spindle, means for returning the spindle to its initial position after each operation, and a means in the path of a core operated to a released position when engaged by a core to hold the restraining means released and receivable in said opening to position the restraining means for operation.
8. A holder for a roll of paper having a tubular core with a lateral opening, said holder comprising, a supporting body, a spindle rotatably supported by the body and adapted to extend into and carry the core, releasable stop means for limiting turning of the spindle, and a control for the stop means including a part operated when engaged by a core on the spindle to release the stop means and adapted to extend into the opening to position the stop means for operation.
9. A holder for a roll of paper having a tubular core with a lateral opening, said holder comprising, a supporting body, a spindle rotatably supported by the body and adapted to extend into and carry the core, releasable stop means for limiting turning of the spindle, the spindle being dynamically eccentric to automatically return to its initial rotative position after each operation, and a control for the stop means including a part normally projecting into the opening and adapted to be operated by a core engaged over it to release the stop means.
10. In combination, a roll of paper, a tubular core in the roll, the core having an opening in its wall, a spindle on which the core may be arranged to support the roll to turn therewith, means supporting the spindle for rotation, releasable stop means for limiting turning of the spindle, a control for the stop means normally positioned to project into the said opening to render the stop active and operable when a core part is engaged over it to release the stop means, and gravity means associated with the spindle for returning the spindle to its initial position after actuation.
11. A device for holding a roll of paper having a core provided with a lateral opening, said device comprising, a base, two spaced arms projecting from the base, a spindle on which the roll may be arranged, a member rotatably supporting one end of the spindle and pivotally connected to one of the arms on an axis transverse of the spindle whereby the spindle may be pivoted to a position where the core may be slid on it, means rotatably and releasably connecting the other end of the spindle with the other arm, a stop on the said member, a lever pivoted on the spindle, a spring urging the lever to an active position to engage the stop to limit turning of the spindle, a part on the lever engageable in the opening in the core when the lever is in position to engage the stop and operable when engaged by a core part to move the lever out of the active position, and means for returning the spindle to its initial rotative position after each operation.
12. In a device of the character described, support means, a spindle carried by the support means for rotation-a roll of paper, a tubular core carrying the roll and arranged on the spindle whereby the roll is turnable with the spindle, the core having an opening in its wall, a stationary stop, a lever pivotally carried by the spindle to turn therewith, means yieldingly urging the lever to a position where it may engage the stop to limit turning of the spindle, said lever having a part in the path of the core which when engaged by the core holds the lever out of position to cooperate with the stop and when received in the said opening allows the lever to assume a position to engage the stop.
13. In combination, a roll of paper, a tubular core in the roll, the core having an opening in its wall, a spindle on which the core may be arranged to support the roll to turn therewith, means supporting the spindle for rotation, a stationary stop part, and a member shiftably carried by the spindle adapted to be partially received by said opening and positioned to engage the said part to limit turning of the spindle when thus received by said opening.
