Description

Patented May 16, 1939 PACKAGE Maxwell Knolpp, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Knorpp Candy Company, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application october 2s, 1936, serial N0. 107,691
1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful means whereby ornamentations for use in decorating birthday cakes and similar articles can be held together as a complete unit, an object being to provide a means whereby the items included in the set, will be held properly for packing and storing and will, at the same time, be fully protected from dust and moisture.
A further object is to provide a package of this type which is attractive and the parts of which can be made and assembled cheaply and quickly so as to be adapted for quantity production.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a package embodying the present improvements.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3 3, Figure l.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4, Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5 5, Figure l.
Figure 6 is a plan View of a blank used in the formation of the body portion of the package.
Referring to the figures by characters of ref- 35 erence I designates a blank formed of stiff paper board and adapted to be folded along lines extending transversely thereof for the purpose of producing the body portion of the package. A
score line 2 or the like extending transversely of 40 the blank adjacent to the center thereof serves to divide said blank into the upper and lower portions 3 and 4 respectively of the body of the package. The upper portion 3 is formed with transversely extending scores or the like indicated 4.5 at 5 and the material between these scores forms the upper holding member of the body while those portions of the blank between the scores 5 and the ends of the top portion 3 constitute side or supporting walls 6.
The upper holding portion 1 located between the scores 5 can be formed with one or more rows of small apertures 8 while at any suitable point, preferably adjacent to the center of the top holding portion, there are formed alining 55 slits 9 spaced apart at their inner ends. At the (Cl. 20G-44) ends of each slit 9 are short transverse slits IIJ. Thus the material dened by these slits 9 and IEI can be bent downwardly to provide parallel depending anges II arranged in pairs.
The lower portion 4 of the blank is provided with transverse scores I2 or the like which dene the lower holding portion of the body, this portion being indicated at I3. That portion of the blank between the score I2 and the score 2 is narrower than the adjacent wall 6 and constitutes a supporting wall I4 for one side of the holding portion I3. Another similar wall I5 is `provided at the other side of the holding portion I3 and is divided by a score I6 or the like from a supple- Vmental wall Il' which constitutes the end portion of the blank and is substantially of the same height as the wall 6.
The holding portion I3 is formed with a longitudinal series of cross slits I3, the points of intersection between these slits being spaced apart substantially the same distances as are the openings 8.
It will be apparent that a blank out and scored as shown in Figure 6 can be produced readily. After the formation of this blank it is folded to bring the walls I4 and I5 into perpendicular positions at the inner sides of the walls 3 and this obviously will result in the positioning of the lower holding portion I3 directly under and substantially parallel with the upper holding portion l, the two portions being spaced apart as shown in Figures 2 to 5 inclusive.
Ornamental rosettes can be glued at desired points on the top portion 'l while candle holders 20 having stems 2l of wire or the like, are inserted downwardly through the openings 8 and through slits I8, the material surrounding these slits providing flaps 22 which will frictionally engage the stems 2i so as to prevent them from becoming displaced accidentally. The flanges II are bent downwardly and will extend adjacent to the lower holding portion I3. They will cooperate, therefore, to form a transverse channel or receptacle of such size as to hold a group of small candles 23 which lie between the flanges II and also extend under the band 24 formed by that portion of the upper holder 'l located between the flanges II.
After the candles, candle holders `and ornamental rosettes or the like have been assembled as described with the folded blank, a covering sheet 25, preferably of Cellophane, is laid over the top holder so as to cover the articles mounted thereon. An endless band 26 of paper board or the like proportioned to fit snugly around the body portion of the package, is then pressed downwardly onto the marginal portion of the cellophane covering with the result that this marginal portion will be gathered downwardly about the folded blank l where it will be held by the encircling band 26, thus completing the formation of the package.
What is claimed is:
A package including a single length of sheet materialI folded to provide spaced upper and lower holding portions having supporting sides, there being spaced pairs of alned slits in the upper holding portion at opposite sides of the center thereof providing spaced pairs of angesdownturned from the upper holding portion to- MAXWELL KNORPP.
