L. R. WILMARTH ARTICLE HOLDER April 25, 1933.

Patented 25, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT orncr:
LOUIS R. WILIARTH, OI ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HOWARD S. SCHOLES, EDGEWOOD, RHODE ISLAND ARTICLE nornna Application filed April 24,
This invention relates to an improved construction of article holder in which such articles as pepper and salt shakers and other articles, may be mounted for display, storage or shipment; and the object of this invention is to arrange a supporting member or members in a box member with suitable openings to receive and support the end portions of the article to be mounted in the holder.
A further object of the invention is'to arrange a supporting deck plate in the box so that that portion intermediate its ends will lie against the bottom of the box and its end portions will be supported above the plane of the intermediate portion and to provide these end portions with openings or recesses to receive the head end and the foot end of the article to be mounted therein.
The invention further consists in the provision of inwardly folded flange portions on the extremities of the deck plate to lie against and be attached to the. end Walls of the box;
also to provide inclined portions on the plate intermediate the end portions and the middle portion of the plate and to provide these inclined portions with openings or recesses for receiving the head and foot ends of the article to be mounted therein.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel featuresof construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved article holder, and showing a pair of articles in dotted lines as mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the support ing plate member in extended position removed from the box member.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the plate member as folded ready to be inserted into the box member.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view showing the plate as folded and inserted into the box member, also illustrating in dotted lines an article as mounted in the holder.
Fig. 5 shows a modified form of the deck plate extended in which the stock out from 1930. Serial No. 446,866.
the openings therein forms an inwardly-extending tongue portion.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the plate illustrated in Fig. 5, as folded showing the tongues and the foldedunder supporting tion of the article leaving a space intermediate this head portion and the foot portion for the body portions of different sizes and shapes and one means of accomplishing this result is to mount a deck plate member in a box member with its middle portion arranged to lie against the bottom of the box, and the end portions of the deck plate member being raised to a plane above that of the middle portion and preferably connected to this middle portion by inclined portions, and to provide these inclined portions with openings one to receive the head end of the article and the other to receive the foot end of the article. In some cases a suitable number of openings are made in the plate member to receive a pair of any desired number of the article to be mounted in the box or receptacle; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment .of my invention and showing one construction of receptacle or holder by means of which these advantageous results may be accomplished.
With reference to the drawing, 10 designates the box member of my improved holder, which may be made of any suitable size and shape, that herein shown being provided with a body portion of a suitable depth to receive the articles to be mounted therein.
In order to properly mount and support these articles in the box to retain them in the desired set position relative to each other and prevent them from moving about and damaging themselves during shipment and to also render them attractive during display; I have provided a plate member 11 which may be formed of any suitable material, preferably cardboard, I have scored this cardboard on its under side on the lines 12 and 13, also ticles a great variety of shapes and sizes of I have creased or scored this cardboard on the line 14 at one end, and I have also creased the same adjacent, its ends on the lines 15 and 16, by which construction the middle portion 17 of this cardboard plate may be caused to lie against the bottom 18 of the box and be secured thereto by glue, sewing or other suitable means, and permit the end portion 19 of the plate to them be folded inwardly on its line to lie against the end wall 20 of the box and be secured thereto by glue or otherwise, causing the portion 21 to provide a deck to lie in-a plane above that of the middle portion 17 of the plate, the raised portion being connected to the middle portion by the inclined portion 22, which may be readily folded on its creases 12 and 14. The opposite end portion 23 of this plate is also folded inwardly to 'lie against and be secured to the end wall 24 of the box by glue or otherwise,
i and another deck portion 25 of this plate is disposed to lie on an incline, being folded on its scored line 13 to extend from the middle portion to the upper edge of the folded portion 23. The end portion 21 is punched to provide openings 26 to receive the head end of the article to be mounted in the box and the inclined portion 25 is also punched and provided with openings 27 to receive the foot end of the article, by which construction it will be seen that both the head and the foot portions of this mounted article are securely retained against moving about or chafiing against each other or against the box during shipment, and also are held in the proper position while being displayed.
In some cases, where this holder is employed for display purposes, I may cover the plate member with an attractive material such as silk or the like, leaving slack portions over the o enings for the reception of the head and fbot portions of the article to be stored therein. In other instances, the plate member may be covered with paper or other facing material, either plain or fancy, to render it handsome and attractive in appear ance.
When the face of the deck plate is covered with a finishing or ornamental facing material, I preferably leave the stock of the cut out portion forming the 0 enings 26' and 27 connected at one edge, to orm an inwardlyprojecting tongue 28 which presents the effect of a finished surface at the bottom of the opening. Then again, in some instances, I fold the edges 29 and 30 of the stock of the deck plate back beneath the same to facilitate securing the plate in the box member.
My improved article holder is very simple and attractive in construction and by its use articles such as salt and pepper shakers and the like may be mounted therein and retained in proper adjusted position and by engaging only the head and foot portions of these arbody portions may be employed using the same 0 enings for the head and foot portions thereof:
While I have described certain construction forms which embody the principles of my invention, it is obvious that other desired changes in arrangement may be made within the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A display holder comprising a box having bottom and side walls, an article retaining insert in said box comprising a base lying along said bottom wall and portions at either end thereof raised and spaced from said bottom wall, said raised portions being provided with recesses in their upper surfaces and extending downwardly and terminating short of said base and bottom wall to receive the opposite ends of an article and support the ends above and in spaced relation to said base and bottom wall.
2. A display holder comprising a shallow rectangular box having a bottom and side and end walls, an article retaining insert in said box comprising a base lying flat along said bottom wall, a deck at one end of the box spaced from said bottom wall and parallel therewith and having a recess therein, a vertical portion connected to said deck and extending along the-end wall of said box to support one end of said deck in position, a portion connecting said deck and base and having a recess therein spaced from said base to cooperate with the recess in said deck for receiving one end of an article, a vertical portion extending along the other end wall of the box, a portion oining said vertical portion and said base and provided with a recess therein spaced from said base for receiving the other end of an article, whereby said portion may be received and supported from said base and held against lateral movement.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
