Description

s. HOWE-R.
Post-Office Oabihet.
' Patented May 20, 1879.
IN VENTOR ORNEYS.
PATENT OFFIGE.
SAMUEL HOWER, OF GRESS ONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN POST-OFFICE CABINETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
215,621, dated May 20, 1879; application filed April 18, 1879.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HOWER, of Oressona, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Post- Office Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan of the cabinet open. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate spending parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for facilitating the work of stamping letters and canceling stamps in a fourth-class or small post-office.
The invention consists of a box or cabinet, A, of suitable dimensions to lie upon a postoflic'e table, divided into a-nuinber of com partments for the convenience of the work of the ofiice.
The row of receptacles B, in the rear part of the box, which are covered bya hinged lid, 0, having small openings a over the center of each, is intended for the reception of numbered corretickets to register the various kinds or denominations-of stamps canceled during the day.
The next row of compartments, D, is intended to hold the various kinds of stamps used in the business of the office.
The pointed studs or files E have placed upon them the registering-tickets F, marked from 1 up to 10, inclusive. These studs are firmly secured in the box, and are of sufficient length to hold tickets enough for the day; and their tops are on a level with the edge of the box, so that when the lid G is closed it will touch them,-and keep the registering-tickets in place in whatever position the box may be put. The compartment H is used to hold the inking-pad I, and the dating, marking, and canceling stamps K, together with the pouchkey, 850.
In registeringthe number of stamps canceled at any one time, the method is as follows: The number of canceled stamps of each kind or denomination is counted, and if, for instance, there should be twenty-five of any one kind, one ticket marked 5 and two tickets marked 10 are taken from the files, and placed through a slot, a, into that one of the receptacles B that is marked to designate the particular denomination of stamps counted.
At the close of the office-hours these tickets are taken out in their order, the numbers on them added together, and the totals entered on the registering-sheets under their respective heads.
This device is a most convenient one for postmasters,-and its use-precludes almost the possibility of error in making up the account of the days work.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pate11t- The within-described box or cabinet A, provided with compartments B, D, and H, studs or files 'E, numbered registering-tickets F, inking-pad I, canceling and marking stamps K K, cover 0, provided with slots at, and cover G, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
