This invention relates to vanity cases and similar receptacles and has for its object the provision of a case of this character wherein powder, toilet articles and the like may be conveniently and safely carried; in which a slide fastener is utilized as closure means for the case; in which novel means is utilized for securing the fastener in position, and in which an improved assembly of co-operating elements is employed to provide an extremely satisfactory vanity case.
A further fobject of the invention is to provide a case of this character in which closure of the case is effected by means of a slide fastener secured to relatively rigid metal upper and lower case members, thel invention including novel means by which the tapes of the slide fastener are secured to thecase members as well as also` .including means by which the elements co-operating in the formation of thecase members are connected together.
Another object of the invention is to provide a case of the character described having its sections or halves united by a slide fastener and having a hinge for said sections located at thel peripheryof the sections whereby the sections are self-supporting when the case is in its open position, and convenience in the use of the case isthus aorded.
In the accompanying drawing wherein an embodiment of the invention is shown, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a vanity case made in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a part of the case; Fig. 4 is' a rear edge view of the case; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the case in open position. The body of the case consists of two main sections hinged together at 23. Section indicated at I constitutes the base member and that shown at 2 is the cover. Base member I as well as cover member 2 has a body portion composed of a slightly dished disc-shaped plate 3 having its peripheral edge portion continuously channeled as indicated at 4. Resting on top of the marginal edge portion of the plate 3 is an annu-lus or ring 45 which has 'its central opening normally closed by a hinged cover plate 6, said plate being hinged to the annulus 5 as indicated at 'I in Fig. 3, and dished slightly to hold a powder pui 25a. The dished plate 3 and the annulus 5 cooperate in the formation of a receptacle for holding powder or the like, the opening for such receptacle being normally closed by the hinged cover plate 6.
The outer face of the disc or plate I may be covered with suitable flexible material such as in the channel 4 of plate I and held therein by 5 means of a channel-shaped annular retaining strip II. Said strip extends completely around the edge of plate I and has its inner side ange I extending into the channel I and engaging against the edge portion 9 of the covering 8 1ocated in said channel and holding the edge of the covering in the channel. Said channel-shaped retaining strip II has an outer ange I2, which has its free edge portion I3 bent inwardly as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to extend over the annular ange It cn the annulus 5.
Clamped between the flange I4 of annulus 5 and the edge of the plate 3 is a tape I5 on which slide fastener elements I 6 are mounted. Thus, the channel-shaped retaining member II operates to hold said tape I in position as Well as to hold annulus 5, plate 3 and outer covering 8 together'as a unit.
The cover member 2 is constructed similarly ,to the base member except that instead of being provided with the annulus 5, said cover member is provided with an inner plate member I'I l secessed or depressed to receive a mirror I8. The cover member 2 is provided with a channel member IIa corresponding to that shown at II and confining a fastener tape I9 in a manner similar to that described with respect to the maintenance of the tape I5 in position. Tape I9 carries fastener elements 20 which co-operate with those indicated at I6 to form a closure means between the cover member 2 and the base section I of the case.
The cover member 2 and base section I are hinged together at their peripheries` This hinge connection is provided by means of the lug portion 2i extending upwardly from flange II and the co-operating lug portion 22 formed integral with and' extending downwardly from the retaining strip I Ia. Lugs 2| and 22 are rolled in the conventional manner to receive the hinge pin 23 and thus pivotally unite base section I and cover member 2.
Through the arrangement disclosed it will be noted that the` hinged connection between base section I and cover member 2 is disposed at the 50 periphery of the members I and 2 and that the slide fastener which connects the base member I and cover member 2 extends from one end 25 of the hinge to the other end 26, so that when the slide fastener is fully opened by means of the conventional operating member 2l, as shown in Fig. 5, the cover member 2 may be lifted and will incline backwardly suiiiciently to enable it to retain itself in open position by its own weight,
as clearly shown in Fig. 5, without being supported or heldin such position.
While I have shown the case or receptacle of circular or disc formation, it will be obvious that it may be made in various shapes. It will also be obvious that the outer .surfaces of the discs or plates comprising the body portions of the base section and a cover member may be enamelled or otherwise ornamented, thus eliminating the iiexible covering 8, and various other modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. The plates or discs forming the body portions of the case are relatively rigid and provide a sturdy case which holds its shape under severe conditions of use.
