This invention relates to an index, and particularly to a signal adapted for use with a transparent index tab. l

It isan object of this invention to provide an indicator signal that may readily be moved across the face of an index tab and will stat7 in any desired position. It is a further object of this invention to provide an indicator signal that cannot become accidentally displaced from the card or sheet to which it is secured. Other objects of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet showing one embodiment of the invention;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the sheet of Figure 1 showing the indicator signal in its outermost position; and

Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken along the line III- III of Fig. 1.

In the drawing, the reference numeral 2 indicates a sheet apertured, as indicated at 3, for impalement upon the sheet retaining prongs of a loose leaf binder. 'I'he sheet is provided with an index tab 4 comprising a folded strip of transparent material such as Celluloid having its edges secured to one edge of the sheet and having a double walled portion projecting outside the area of the sheet and adapted to have a label 5 inserted between the walls of the index tab. The walls of the index tab are provided with registering apertures 6 positioned adjacent the edge of the sheet 2.

The sheet 2 is provided with a series of apertures 1, 8 and 9 parallel to the apertures 6. An indicator signal I0 formed of thin resilient material, such as Celluloid, preferably colored to contrast with the index tab, may be threaded through the apertures 1, 8 and 9 and through either one of the two apertures 6. The indicator signal is provided with an enlarged shoulder II adapted to engage the slot 1 to limit the movement of the indicator signal towards the left as seen in Figure 1.

The forward edge I2 of the indicator signal projects between the double walls of the index tab just beyond the slot 6 when the signal is in its innermost position indicated in Figure l. The indicator signal must be flexed to be secured to the sheet originally, because of the shoulder I I, so it is impossible for the signal to become accidentally displaced from the sheet. the edge I2 of the signall to limit the movement of the'signal in a right'hand direction as seen in Figure 2.` The rearmost edge I3 of the indicator signal projects just beyond the slot 9 when the signal is in its outermost position, indicated El resilience of the paper and of the signal is sufIicient to retain the indicator signal in any position in which it may be placed.

Although the invention has been illustrated and described particularly with respect to a sheet, it will be understood that it can be utilized just as advantageously with a card. It may also be used with an open face index tab of any kind instead of with a double walled transparent index tab. The foregoing description is intended to be illustrative, rather than restrictive, as many other details may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact construction described, except as limited by the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In combination with a sheet member having an index tab projecting from one edge thereof, an indicator signal slidably secured to said sheet member, said signal being movable a substantial distance into the exposed area of said tab, and means to prevent accidental separation of said signal from said sheet members.

2. In an index, a paper sheet member, a flat resilient indicator signal lying in a single plane, said signal being slidably secured to said sheet member, and means on said signal cooperating with means on said sheet member to prevent removal of said signal without flexing said signal- 3. In combination witha sheet member having an index tab projecting from one edge thereof, an indicator signal slidably secured to said sheet member, said signal being slidable at right angles to said edge across a portion of said tab, and means limiting the movement of said signal in each direction.

4. In an index, a sheet member provided with a plurality of slots parallel to one edge thereof,

an index tab secured to said sheet adjacent said slots, an indicator signal threaded through said slots and slidable so as to project one end thereof across a portion of said index tab, and a shoulder on said signal adapted to cooperate with one of said slots to limit the movement of said signal in a direction away from said index tab.

5. In an index, a sheet member, a folded strip of transparent material secured to one edge of said sheet member with its folded edge positioned outside the area of said sheet member, an aperture in one wall of said strip of transparent material, an indicator signal slidably secured to said sheet member having one end projecting through said aperture, and means limiting the sliding movement of .said signal to prevent accidental retraction of said projecting end 'through said aperture.

6. In an index, a sheet member, a transparent index tab secured to one edge of said sheet member, and having a double Wall projecting from said edge, an indicator signal slidably secured to said sheet member adjacent said index tab with one end positioned between the projecting walls of said index tab, and means limiting the sliding movement of said indicator signal in each direction along a line perpendicular'to said edge.

7. In an index, a sheet member, said sheet member being provided with an aperture adjacent one edge, a tab having a transparent face secured to said sheet member adjacent said apertransparent indextabsecured to said sheet member adjacent said aperture, one wall of said index v4tab being provided with an aperture, a resilient indicator signal having its opposite ends inserted through said apertures with one end projecting between the walls of said index tab, and means p'rojecting'fromA said signal to prevent accidental separation of said signal from said sheet member. 9. In an index, a sheet member, a transparent index tab having a double wall projecting from one edge of said sheet member, and an indicator signal mounted on said sheet member adjacent said index tab and having one end positioned between the projecting walls of said index tab, said signal being slidable along a line perpendicular to said edge.
