Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. STEVENS, OF lHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. HARRIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
BOX-FASTENERS.
J annary 8, 1879.
To all whom "it may concern.-
Be it known that I,JOHN L. STEVENS, of Gl1icago,in the county of Cook, andin the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box -Oover Fasteners; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for fastening box-covers, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, 1 will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a box with cover embodying" my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
A represents a-box of any suitable dimensions, provided at each end with a cleat or cross-bar, B, firmly fastened across the same at any suitable distance from the top. 0 is the cover, provided at the ends with crossbars or cleats DD, which, when the cover is put on, are to rest on the cleats B B at the ends of the box.
In one end of the box A, above the cleatB, is fastened a pin or plug, a, which is to enter a corresponding hole, b, in the cleat D of the cover. In the other box-cleat B is screwed an L-shaped hook or screw, F. In the cleat D of the cover is made a round opening, (1, and from the same, in the outer side of the cleat, is made a groove, d, extending first horizontally and then vertically downward through the edge of the cleat.
By turning the hook F outwardthe cover can be put on the box by first placing the hole I) of the cleat D over the pin a, and the cleat I) can then be passed over the hook F, which enters the vertical part of the groove d. The hook F is then to be turned so that its horizontal part will lie in the horizontal part of the groove 01, and the end of the hook project into the opening (1. The hook thus secures the cover on the box, and can easily be turned outward again for removing the cover.
It is evident that the same devicei. 6.,12116 hook, Sta-can be used on both ends of the box, if desired.
I am aware that it is not new to use a revolving hook as a means for fastening the cover of a box, and I do not claim such, broadly, as my invention.
In my invention, when the cover is fastened, the hook is entirely out of the way and protected; in fact, the entire fastening is such that it cannot become broken by handling, &c.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a box, A, and cover G, of the L-shaped hook F, secured in a cleat on the outside of the box, and the opening (1 and groove 11 in a cleat, D, onthe cover, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of N ovemher, 1878.
JOHN L. STEVENS.
