3 Claims.
This invention relates to fence posts, andin particular, to metallic fence posts.
One object'of this invention is'to provide'a'me tallic fence post having means on-one side of the post for preventing the slippage of metal clips used to secure the fence wire to the opposite side of the post.
Another object is to provide a clip of an improved 'type for securing the fence wire to the fence post.
Another object is to provide a fence post of channel cross section having a plurality of spaced projections upon one face thereof, these projections being in one or two rows and adapted to prevent the slippage of Wire clips employed to'secure the fence Wire to the opposite side of the post.
Another object is to provide a fence "post of channel cross section, having a central channel portion with spaced lugs projecting therefrom and lateral flanges against which the fence wire is adapted to be held by means of suitable clips.
Another object is to provide a fence post of channel cross section having an anchor plate secured thereto, this anchor plate having a projecting portion so bent as to enter and fit the channel portion of the post so as to anchor the post against its being bent one way or the other by pressure against the fence.

Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the fence post of this invention, showing fence wires attached thereto by clips.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the fence post shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross section along the line 3-3 in Figure 1, showing the first step in securing the fence wire to the post by means of the clip.
Figure 4 is a section similar to Figure 3, but showing the second step of attaching the fence Wire to the fence post, the free end of the clip being bent back on itself.
Figure 5 is a cross section along the line 5-5 in Figure 1, showing the attachment of the anchor plate to the fence post.
Figure 6 is a front elevation of a portion of a modified form of fence post, employing a double row of lugs.
Figure '7 is a cross section along the line in Figure 6.
In general, the fence post of this invention consists of an elongated metal channel member having spaced projecting lugs on the back thereof. These lugs are adapted to receive and prevent the slippage of wire clips, which secure the fence wires against the front of the fence post. An anchor plate, bent rearwardly to enter and engage the channel portion of the fence post, is secured thereto by rivets. I 7
Referring to the drawing in detail, Figure 1 5 shows afenc'epost, generally designated Ill, having lateral "front'flanges (Figure 3) connected by sides H to the rear wall |3 of the channel portion of the fence post W. The back face ll of the wall I3 is provided with a multiplicity of spaced lugs |5, projecting therefrom at intervals along thefence post. An anchor plate |6'is provided with a rearwardly bent portion having sides ll and aback '|8, entering the channel portion of the fence post and secured thereto by rivets l9. This anchor plate l6 enters the earth when the pointed end of the fence post is driven into the ground, and prevents the leaning of the fence post as a "result of pressure against the fence wires. 20
The fence Wires 2|, forming the fence, are held against the lateral front flanges H by means of wire clips, generally designated 22. The clips 22 may be supplied in partially bent form, such as shown in Figure 3, in order to facilitate the quick and easy attachment of the fence wires 2| to the fence posts Iii. For this purpose the clips 22 are provided with a U-shaped bend 23 near the free end 24 thereof, this bend partially surrounding the fence wire 2|. An additional bend 25 engages the edge of one of the lateral flanges II, and other bends 26 engage the edges of the rear wall l3 of the fence post. A final bend 21 engages the outer edge of the remaining lateral flange H, and the free end 28 is provided with but a slight bend 29 which may be omitted, if desired.
In the use of the invention, the fence post I!) is driven into the ground, as by hammering upon the top 30 thereof, to a depth sufficient to cause the anchor plate Hi to enter the ground. The wires 2| are then strung in their proper positions and caused to engage the forward lateral flanges ll of the fence post IE). To anchor the wire to the fence post a clip 22 is brought into engagement with the wire 2|, with its bent portion 23 passing around the Wire 2| and with its bent portions 26 and 21 engaging the rear edges of. the rear wall l3, and the outer edge of the remaining lateral flange II, as shown in Figure 3. 5 The free end 28 then projects forwardly beneath the wire 2|, as shown in Figure 3. The portion of the wire clip 22 lying between the bends 26 now lies between adjacent lugs I5, by which it is prevented from sliding up or down. The spring action of the clip 22 between the opposite portions 23 and 29 holds the assembly temporarily together until the anchorage is completed by bending the end 28 around the wire. 26' indicates the corner of the post over which the wire is bent at 26.
To complete the anchorage the user now bends the free end 28 over the wire 2| into the position shown in Figure 4, causing an additional U- shaped bend to occur at the point 3| (Figure 4) To finish the securing of the fence wire 2| to the fence post H), the user now twists the wire clip 22 around the wire 2! by winding the ends 24 and 28 therearound, in the manner shown in Figure 1. '2! to be securely held against the fence post I0, yet the clips 22 and hence the fence wires 2 I, are prevented from slipping up or down by the presence of the spaced lugs IS. The anchor plate I6 prevents the leaning of the post forwardly or rearwardly as a result of pressure upon the fence wires 2 I, and is shapedto reduce frost heaving.
The modified fence post 32, shown in Figures 6 and 7, consists of sides 33 and a rear wall 34, forming a channeled member having rear edges 35. Adjacent these rear edges are rows of lugs 36, similar to the lugs l previously described. The lugs 36, however, are arranged in a double row along the rear face '31 of the rear wall 34 of the fence post 32. The application of the clip 22 and fence wires 2| to the modified fence post 32 is similar to the procedure already desribed in connection with the fence post It). One end of the clip 22 is inserted'around the wire 2| and the other end bent therearound, as in the manner previously described and illustrated in Figures 3, 4 and 5. The double row of lugs 36, however, prevents the lateral tilting of the clips 22, and thereby prevents a tendency for the clips to be spread apart.
This arrangement causes the fence wires It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as come within the scope of the claims and the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A fence post comprising an elongated channel member U-shaped in section with fiat marginal flanges, and an anchor member secured to said channel member, said anchor member having a portion extending within the channel thereof and other portions on either side engaging with the flat marginal portions of the post and extending therebeyond parallel thereto, said other portions extending on the outside of the fence post and parallel to the fence Wires.
2. A fence post comprising an elongated channel member having laterally disposed flanges along the edges of said channel member, and an anchor member secured to said channel member, said anchor member having a portion extending within the channel thereof and other portions extending beyond the margins of the flanges of the fence post and parallel thereto in the form of flat plates, said other portions extending on the outside of the fence post and parallel to the fence wires.
3. A fence post comprising an elongated channel member having laterally disposed fiat flanges along the edges of said channel member, and an anchor member secured to said channel member, said anchor member having a portion extending Within the channel thereof and coextensively engaging the walls of said channel and having flat laterally extending flanges parallel with the post flanges, and extending therebeyond, said other portions extending'on the outside of the fence post and parallel to the fence wires.
