METALLIC FENCEPOST. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 14. 1922.

Patented Nov. 28,1922.
WILLIAM A. HOLLAND, or toivboivfomo.
METALLIC rnnonros'r.
Application filed. August 14, 1922. Serial No. 581,604.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that WILLIAM A. HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at London, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fenceposts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is directed to 1mproveme-nts in metal fence posts, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character having means detachably associated therewith for securing the line wires in their properly spaced position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fence post of this character whereby the wire holding attachment can be renewed should it become worn and useless without substituting a new post, thereby greatly reducing the expense of such device.
A still further object of the invention is I to provide novel means for attaching the anchor plate to the post.
lVith these and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel feature of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts, and hereinafter to be fully described and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence post equipped with the wire holding attachment and anchor plate.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line -22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the anchor plate.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the metal post which is formed from T-iron, the webs being beveled at their lower ends as at 2, whereby the post can be easily driven into the ground.
The wire holding member 8 is formed from a single sheet of metal and it is bent to provide a front plate at, the side edges of which being turned to provide longitudinal grooves 5, said grooves being adapted to slidably receive the side edges of the webs 6 of the post 1, while the plate 4 lies adjacent the front face of said web 6. It is deemed desirable that the wire holding memor other suitable securing device is passed through the holder and the web 6, thereby positively holding the member. 3 in fixed relation with the post.
The plate 4 of the holding member 3 is prov ded with a plurality of tongues 8 and 9, said tonguesbeing struck from the plate, and consequently forming integral parts thereof. The tongues 8 are directed upwardly for holding certain of the line wires 10, while the tongues 9 are directed downwardly to hold certain other of the line wires 10. Since the tongues 9 are directed down wardly it is obvious that the line wires 10 engaged therewith will be prevented from being moved upwardly should an animal attempt to pass between the wires 10 engaged therewith. These tongues are so arranged with respect to the plate 4: that the line wires 10 will be held thereby by a wedging action.- or if desired the tongues may be bent into tight engagement with the wires upon simply striking the same with a hammer.
The anchor plate 11 is substantially rectangular in shape and has its lower end pointed, as at 12, said plate being provided with wings 13, said wings being truck from the plate 11 to provide a pair of opposed grooves 14. It will be noted that the 0pposed edges of the wings 13 are spaced to i provide a slot 15.
In setting the post up for use the post 1 is driven into the ground to the proper depth, after which the anchor plate 11 is applied to the upper end of the post and since the side edges of the web 6 engage the grooves 5 of the holding member 3 said plate will be slidably connected therewith, at which time the web 16 of the post 1 is engaged in the slot 15. The anchor plate 11, is then forced downwardly on the post and which will then be driven into the ground until the upper edge thereof is in a plane with the ground line, or it may be driven further down into the ground in any suitable way.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have produced a metallic fence post, which will last indefinitely and has associated therewith a wire holding member which can be renewed when desired, said member having the tongues 8 and 9 formed as an integral part and arranged in vertical alignment, the lowermost series of the tongues being so arranged as to prevent upward movement of the line wires 10 should fmil I an anlmal attempt to pass between the IOWGI:
most line Wires.
What I claim is: The combination with a fence post formed from T shaped metal, of a ire holding member having grooves carried thereby for slidahly engaging the side edges of a Portion WILLIAM A. HOLLAND.
