FENCE-POST ANCHOR.

This invention relates to anchors for, posts and the like and has for an object theprovision of a device which may be secured to a post and the latter freely driven into the ground, the device providing effective resist ance to outward movement of the post after the latter has been properly inserted.

Another objeetof the invention isthe provision of a post anchor of simple and durable construction, being preferably made of sheet metal and including a pair of hingedly connected plates andstops, with the latter struck from the material of one of the plates.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a fragmentary portion of a fence post with the invention applied, the hinged plate being positioned for insertion into the ground.

Figure 2 is an elevation at right angles to Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a top view.

Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 shows ing'the hinged plate in its lowermost position.

Figure 6 is an elevation at right angles to Figure 5.

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of a fence post which is preferably made of metal and which may be T shaped as shown'in the drawings. The lower end of this post is inclined as at 11 so as to provide a sharpened point for insertion into the ground.

The invention includes an attaching plate 12 which is secured to one face of the post and for this purpose, the post may be provided with laterally disposed spaced lugs 13 for insertion in. openings 14 provided in the plate 12 and these lugs may be upset so that the plate 12 will be riveted to the post. The opposite side edges of the plate 12 are preferably upwardly and outwardly inclined as shown at 15 so as to facilitate entrance of the plate into the ground.

Hingedly secured to the upper edge of the attaching plate 12, preferably by means of rings16, is a plate 17. "This last mentioned plate is'provided'with spacedopenings 18 so ,that the plate may assume the position shownin Figln'esl and2 of the drawings. In thisposition, the plate 17 lies fiat against the face of the post andthe openings 18 are l for the purpose of accommodating the spaced lugs 13 so as to permit of this position of theblate. i 1' f a As the post is driven into the ground, the plate 18 assumes the position shown in Figure-s, 1 and 2. '"Any attempt to" pull the post upward will be resisted by theplate 17 as,

upward movement of the post will cause this plate to move outward and downward. This movement 1s insured by providinig the plate 17 along its upper edge with, outturned corners 19 which will act to guide the plate outward or away from the post as the latter moves upward. I I j Downward movement ofthe plate 17 with respect to the post is limited by stop wings 20. These wings are preferably formed by slitting the plate 12 downwardly and inwardly as shown at 21 and bending the material adjacent these slitslaterally with respect to the plate so that outwardly extending tapered stop wings areprovided. The tapered wings form a minimum amount of resistance tothe entrance of the post into the ground.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor,

details of construction and'the right is here- 1n reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope ofthe appended claims. Having described the invention what is claimed is: I

1. In combination with a post, an anchor comprising an attaching plate adapted to lie flat against a vertical face of the post, means to secure theplate to the post, a plate having one of its edges hingedly secured to the upper edge of the attaching plate, said hingedly secured plate being adapted to lie parallel with the post as the latter is inserted into the ground, and to assume an angular position when the post is pulled outward, means included in the hinged plate to initially resist l upward movement, and means to limit indeppndent downward movement, of the hinged p ate. 7 w I 2. In combination with a post, an anchor comprising an attaching plate'adapted tolie fiat against a vertical face of the post, means to secure the plate to the post, a plate having one of its edges hingedly secured to the up per edgeof theattaching plate, said hingedly secured plate being adapted to lie parallel with the post as the latter is inserted into the ground and to assume an angular position when the post is pulled outward,outwardly curved corners provided upon the outer edge ofthe hinged plate to'initially resist upward movement, and means to limit independent downward movement of thehinged plate.

3. In combination witha post, an anchor 7 comprising an attaching plate adapted to lie flatagainst a vertical face of the post, oppositely and outwardly inclined side edges for ward, means included in the hinged plate to initially resist upward movement, and means tolimit independent downward movement of the hinged plate.

4. 5. In combination with a post having spaced laterally extending lugs, an anchor comprising an attaching plate having openings therein to receive the lugs toprovide means for securing the plate to the post, a plate having one of its edges hingedly secured to the upper edge of the attaching plate and also having openings to receive said lugs to permit the hinged plate to lie parallel against the face of the post as thelatter is inserted into the ground and to assume an angular position when the post is pulled outward,
