Description
19361 I FISCHER mmz EXPANSION JOINT INSTALLING MEANS Filed Feb. 27, 1930 Invezzi0 WaZZaw/G Else/L0 Patented Jan. 14, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to expansion joint installing means, and particularly pertains to a device for installing expansion joint strips in a concrete paving structure to separate the concrete at spaced intervals into sections.
Generally described the invention comprises a clip or unit provided with a base and projecting rib for engaging with an expansion joint strip and a staking device, whereby said strip may be positioned in the paving structure prior to pouring of the concrete. For assembling the clips the expansion joint is preferably perforated so that the rib may be projected therethru with the base engaging one face of the strip about the margin of the perforation. A perforation is formed in the projecting rib of the clip and thru this perforation a staking means is adapted to be inserted and driven into the ground for supporting the strip. Any desired number of these clips may be employed, and the perforations in the strips may be so arranged as to permit laying a series of strips and end to end in the form of a continuous line.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of expansion joint strips assembled with clips embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 is a view somewhat similar to Figure 1 with the clips removed; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of clip.
Referring particularly to the drawing, numeral 2 designates expansion joint strips of any conventional constructions. These usually are provided in sections of suitable lengths for convenient handling, and are laid end to end in a paving structure, transversely and longitudinally, to divide the paving into sections. In these strips any number of perforations 3 may be formed to permit insertion of my novel and improved clip 4. Any or all of the perforations may be provided by recessing both ends of the strips so that when they are laid end to end, the recessed portions together will form a recess for the clip. However, if the strips are of considerable length,
additional perforations are preferably provided intermediate the ends to prevent bending.
The clip is typified by a sheet metal blank bent in the form of a triangular rib 5 with the sides terminating in one or more base flanges 6 which are adapted to engage the strip around the margin of the perforation. Vertical perforations I are provided, midway the ends of the clip, thru the sides of the rib to receive a staking means 8 in line with the ends of the abutting strip. Thus positioned, the staking means functions to hold the ends of the strips clamped to the base flanges of the clip.
Figure 3 shows a modified form of clip wherein the rib I0 is squared in conformation. Otherwise it is of the same construction as above described clip, having base flanges 6 vertical perforation "l and transverse perforation 9 Altho I have described particular modifications embodying my invention it will be understood that there may be various changes in detail without departing from the spirit of the in vention.
I claim:
1. An expansion joint installing device comprising a loosely mounted clip embodying a blank having a pair of base flanges for engaging an expansion joint strip, and a triangular ribbed portion connecting the base flanges and perforated to receive a staking means.
2. An expansion joint installing device comprising a metal loosely mounted clip embodying a blank having a pair of base flanges for engaging an expansion joint strip, and a triangular ribbed portion connecting the base flanges and perforated to receive a staking means.
3. A center strip device comprising in combination a center strip board having an opening therein, and a supporting bracket therefor having an apertured portion projecting through said opening for the reception of dowel bars and retaining pins at substantially right angles with respect to one another.
WALLACE C. FISCHER.
