Description
W. H. SWOGGER. Churn-Power.
No. 215.027. Patented May 6,1879.
5% frwenlori' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. SWOGGER, OF MERCER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEM ENT IN CHURN-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,027, dated May 6, 1879; application filed April 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Swoeenn, of the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churn Powers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved churn-power, and lig. 2 is a horizontal section through the line as m of Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the two figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention relates to certain improvements in mechanism for operating churns; and it consists in the employment of a wheel connected to the lever, attached to the dasherstaff, and also connected to an oblique treadle or foot'lever, attached to a l1and-lever,substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A refers to an upright frame or support, mounted upon legs a a. B is a wheel, with its axis or shaft fastened in the frame A. This wheel is of the ordinary fly or balance Wheel form, and is provided with a wrist-pin, b, which is adapted to be attached to either spoke of the wheel or to other convenient point where the wheel is of disk form. C O are two arms or links, one being connected to the wrist-pin b of the wheel B and to the lever D,fulcrumed to or between a bifurcated support or to other convenient point upon the frame" A. To the lever D is attached the churn-dasher. The arm 0 is also connected to the wrist-pin b of the wheel B, and to one end of the oblique treadle or footlever E, fulcrumed upon a screw-threaded connecting-bolt or cross-piece, d, at the lower end of the frame or support A. The treadle or foot-lever E may be held to its place upon the bolt or cross-piece d between nuts (1' d. To the treadle or lever E is also connected, by a bar or arm, F, a hand-lever, Gr, pivoted to the frame A.
This arrangement of the parts may be varied as convenience and taste may dictate without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The operator, by grasping with the hand the hand-lever G and moving it up and down, it will be observed, will impart a greatly- -accelerated motion to the dasher-operating lever, thus expediting the churning of the cream or the contents of the churn.
By omitting the arm F and hand-lever G it will be seen that the mechanism can be operated or the power applied by foot.
The lever-support of the lever D is adapted to be shortened or lengthened, to vary the leverage, as occasion may require.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the wheel B and its wrist-pin, of the arms 0 0, connected thereto and to the dasher-operating lever D, and to the oblique treadle or foot-lever E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the wheel B and its wrist-pin, of the arms C G, lever D, oblique treadle or foot-lever E, arm F, and handlever G, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. H. SWOGGER.
Witnesses CARRIE MOORE, NOAH A. SEWALL.
