MECHANISM FOR. CONVERTING MOTION. No. 274,374. Patents r/AV/////z WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD S. PLIMPTON, OF DENISON, IOWA.
MECHANISM FOR CONVERTING MOTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,374, dated March 20, 1883.
Application filed October 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD S. PLIMPTON, of Denison, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Mechanism for Converting Motion, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide mechanism for converting the reciprocating motion of windmill pitman'r'ods into continuons and steady rotary motion without deadcenters; and to that end the invention consists in lever mechanism constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificatiolnin which similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mechanism, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on line a: m of Fig.1.
A may represent the side of a building, on which is the windmill-tower B, and b the windmiILshait, from which the pitman 0 passes to a'slide rod, d, that is titted for movement in suitable guides, as usual.
c is a lever hung on a fulcrum,f, at or near its middength, and connected at one end by a pin and slot at g. or other connection, to the rod (3'.
his the shorter lever, connected'at one end by a link, i, to the outer end of lever e, and connected at its other end by a link, I, to a crank on the shaft k. The power is to be taken from this shaft k, and it is provided with a balance-wheel, r.
m is a lever, preferably placed below shaft 70, and connected at one end by a pin and slot,
0, to slide-rod d, while its other end is connected by a link, it, to a second crank on shaft is; or it may be connected to the crank that link'l is attached to, link l being connected directly to lever e in this case. The slide-rod 11 being reciprocated, the movement thereby imparted to levers e m is transferred to the shaft k, and a continuous rotary motion of the shaft is thus obtained. The intermediate lever, h, serves to reverse the direction of the movement given by the lever 0; but the same effect will be produced by having the levers cm of a dili'erent order one from the other and connecting the link I directly to the lever 0, thus dispensing with lever h.
I do not limit myself to levers of any one order, as they may be arranged as most convenient, according to location. While power can be obtained by the use of either set of le vers separately, yet their combined action materially reduces the dead-center resistance and produces a more uniform stead y motion.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the slide-rod d, of the levers e in, links 1 n, and the crank-shaft k, substantially as herein shown and described. 6 5
2. The combination, with the slide-rod 01, the levers e h m, the links i l n, and the doublecrank shaft is, substantially as herein shown and described.
ED WARD S. PLIMPTON.
