A. W. OARNAHAN,
PUMPING AND DRILLING MACHINE.
Patented Ma 11, 1886.
WITNESSES INVENTOR: 2. BY mm I ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM W. GARNAHAN, OF ROUSEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUMPING AND DRILLING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forining part of Letters Patent No. 341,637, dated May 11, 1886.
Application filed October 15 1885. Serial No. 179.972. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM W. CARNA- HAN, of Rouseville, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Pumping and Drilling Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for drilling wells and pumping, which machine is simple in construction, is not expensive, is not apt to get out of order, and has fewer parts than the pumping and drilling machines used heretofore.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which a side view of my improved machine for drilling and pumping is shown.
In the tower A, of the usual construction, the rocking lever B is pivoted, and is connected by the two bands 0, chains, or other devices, with the pump or drill rod D, of the usual construction. The two bars E are connected with the opposite ends of the lever B, are passed over the wheel F, and are connected with the upper ends of the rocking levers G. In the standards H the shaftJ isjournaled, which is provided withthe opposite end cranks, L, which are connected with the pitmen L, connected with the rocking levers G.
On the shaft J the cog-wheel M is mounted, which engages with the pinion N on the crankshaft 0 of the engine.
The crank-shaft J is revolved from the engine by means of the cog-wheel M and the pinion N, and the levers G are rocked by means of the pitmen, and thus the bars E are reciprocated in opposite directions, and thereby the drill or pump rod D is worked up and down.
If desired, only one pitman, L, lever, G, and bar, E, may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 1. The combination, with a pump or drill rod, of a rocking bar connected with the same, bars connected with the rocking bar. and a cog-wheel and pinion for reciprocating said bars direct from the crank-shaft of an engine, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a pump or drill rod, of a rocking bar for operating the same, bars connecting the same with rocking levers, pitmen connecting the rocking levers with a crankshaft, a cog-wheel on the crank-shaft, and a pinion on the crank-shaft of the engine, which pinion engages with the said cog-wheel, substantially as herein shown and described.
ABRAHAM W. OARNAHAN.
