DRILLING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,319, dated July 1, 1890. Application filed April 1, 1890. Serial No. 346,208. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ALEXANDER BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glen ilton, in the county of Botetourt and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to drilling-ma chines which aredesigned more especially to be operated by hand-power; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view; Fig. 2, a front elevation; and Figs. 3 and 4 are details, I have illustrated the drillinganachine having a base portion A, to which are connected three uprights 13 B, which are secured together by the transverse braces C C to form a framework capable of a limited adjustment upon the base to which the uprights are connected preferably by screw-pivots in such a manner that the frame may be secured in its adjusted position.
On one side of the frame are two of the uprights B B in approximate position and having between them an interval for the gearwheels D D whereof the former is provided with a crank 61 and the latter with a horizontal crank-shaft e, which extends across the frame and is provided with the crank bends a a at the sides of its middle portion to receive the lower ends of the pit-man, straps or rods 1) b, the upper ends of which are connected to staples f f of the sliding cross-head F and have a limited play on said staples. This cross-head is provided with reduced en ds which bear in the vertical slots of the lateral posts or uprights B B and has reciprocating motion thereon when the machine is in operation. On the shaft 6 at the sides of the pitman straps or rods 1) b are rigidly secured the fly-wheels G G, these fly-wheels being ar ranged in position with relation to said straps or rods and with relation to the middle portion of the frame where the vertical drill-rod L is located. This drill-rod is preferably square in cross-section. A spring S, above a bearing through the cross-head F, is secured or connected to the drill-rod, being fixed thereto by means of a suitable collar and setscrew, which may be loosened to allow adjustment of the drill as the work proceeds. The lower portion of the drill-rod passes through the bearing ina lower transverse brace-bar of the frame.
Z indicates a star -collar or pointed collar having the radiating angular projections z. This collar is provided with a square opening which fits the drill-rod loosely, so that the latter can move up and down-readily through said opening.
The collar Z rests on the middle portion of the transverse crank-shaft e, which is provided with a suitable projecting pin or stud c, which at each revolution of the shaft strikes one of the radial points of the starcollar and turns the same a little, sufficiently to give the drill a new angular position with relation to its cutting-edge. In this manner when the machine is operated by turning the crank-handle H the drill receives a stepbystep rotary movement while it is raised and dropped by the cross-head and its springconnection resting thereon. The lower end of the spring works against the upper transverse brace of the frame, which gives tension to the spring for the downward stroke when the cross-head is raised by the crank-shaft a.
This movement is rendered steady and uniform and lateral action prevented by the arrangement of the cranks, pitman-straps, and fiy-wheels.
