Description

March 7, 1939. L SOLOMON 2,149,318
COMPOUND CURLER Filed Jan. 18, 19's? INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ooMroUNn comma 7 Nathan L. Solomon, Brooklyn,.N. r. Application January 18, 1931, Serial No. 121,189 15 Claims. (01. 132-33) The present invention relates to hair curlers and is especially. concerned with a compound hair curler wherein each end may be selectively and conveniently utilized as hair gripping and winding means and wherein each end selectively constitutes manipulating means for bodily rotating the compound curler about the longitudinal axis thereof. Specifically, however, the object of theinvention is realized in the provision of a serviceable compound hair curler having an expanded portion and a reduced portion wherein the expanded portion is adapted to grip and wind the hair to be curled to form relatively large sized curlers upon the'manipulation of the reduced portion and wherein the reduced portion isadapted to grip and wind ha r to form relatively small sized curls upon rotation of the expanded portion. Other objects, advantages, features of the invention will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter specifically pointed out and for a clearer understanding of the invention attention is directed to the following detailed description considered in the light of the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the compound curler according to my invention, showing the reduced end gripping a tress of hair, while expanded and serves as a handle.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the compound curler wherein the expanded end serves to grip the hair and the reduced end constitutes the handle for winding the hair about the expanded end to form relatively large sized curls.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal perspective view of the compound curler, showing the adjacent parts of the reduced portion closed or abutting and the enlarged parts of the expanded portion normally diverged.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 5. r
Fig. '7 is a longitudinal sectional view of another modification and Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line 8- 8 of Fig. '7.
According to the invention the compound hair curler generally denoted I (Figs. 1-3 inclusive) comprises an elongated hollow body defined by the superimposed U-shaped sections broadly'denoted II and I2 each of which includes an enlarged portion I3 from which integrally extends a reduced portion I4.
The superimposed enlarged portfons I3 are provided with perforated ears I through which fulcrum pin I6 is first threaded and subsequently upset to form a rivet to prevent transverse relative displacement of the superimposed sections II, and I 2 and thus a hinged connection is provided to permit one of the U-shaped sections to be pivoted in respect to the companion section of the curler.
Cooperating with the enlarged portions I3 is a. U-shaped spring I'l having its diverged legs I8 abutting opposing inner faces thereof to normally hold the enlarged portions I3 open or slightly diverged, defining gap 20, and to normally hold the superimposed reduced portions I4 closed or in abutting relation.
Where it is desired to form a relatively small curl, the superimposed portions I4 are utilized to first grip a. portion of the tress to be wound and the enlarged portions I3 are utilized as a handle or manipulator for bodily rotating the compound curler aboutits longitudinal ax s; In this connection the expanded part of the curler defined by the superimposed portions I3 is manually grasped to move the latter towards each other, thus separating or opening the attenuated or restricted part of the curler characterized by the superimposed reduced portions I 4, however against the resistance of the legs I8 of the U- shaped spring I1.
Accordingly a suitable gap is formed by the attenuated part of the curler and consequently a free end of a tress 2| of ha r may be interposed between the separated portions II as indicated in Fig. 1. Thereafter, finger pressure tending to hold the reduced portions apart is removed from the expanded part of the curler. It follows that spring II now acts to diverge the enlarged portions I3 and hence the terminal part of the tress is gripped by the reduced portions I4 which tend to close.
With the tress gripped within the restricted part of the curler, the handle constituted by the enlarged portions I3 is rotated, thus the tress of hair is wound about the reduced part of the curler, to form several superimposed convolutions and to remove the coiled hair, the enlarged parts I3 are pivoted slightly towards each other to remove the frictional grip on the tress by the reduced portions I4, and the curl formed may be slidably moved along the reduced part of the curler and outwardly therealong to be ultimately free thereof.
Where a relatively large curl is desired, the free end of the tress is first frictionally gripped in the gap 20 of the normally diverged enlarged portions I3 and the attenuated part of the curler defined by the superimposed companion parts I4 serve as a manipulating handle which is rotated to wind the tress in part gripped by the enlarged portions I3 about the latter. To remove the curl formed, the latter is grasped at one end and slidably displaced until it clears the expanded part of the curler.
In the form according to Figs. 5 and 6 the compound curler comprises hingedly associated companion components 30 and 3|. In the particular instance illustrated, component 30 is in the form of an enlongated cylindrical tube having an enlarged part 32 and a reduced part 33' while component 3| defines an inverted U shaped cover characterized by an enlarged part 33 and a reduced part 34.
Depending from the cover are the spaced perforated cars 35 which straddle the sides of tube 30. Rivet 36 passing through the depending ears of the cover and the body of the tube and transversely thereof serves as fulcrum means to permit the cover to be pivoted in respect to the tube.
Arranged within the tube is a U shaped spring 31. This spring has one leg 38 abutting the bore of tube 30 and another leg 39 passing through opening 40 in tube 30 and abutting the inner surface of the enlarged part 3| of the cover, thus holding the latter normally separated from the tube to form a hair receiving gap 4|.
In the separated open relation of expanded part. 3|, spring 3'! acts to normally hold closed the attenuated part of the curler defined by the superimposed reduced parts 33' and 34 of the tube cover.
Where a large curl is to be formed, a portion of the tress is disposed in -gap 4| and thus is firm; ly gripped in the expanded part of the curler.- The attenuated or reduced part of the latter is thereafter utilized as a handle for winding the gripped hair about the expanded part of the curler.
If it is desired to form a relatively small curl, the reduced portions 33' and 34 are separated by moving the enlarged part 33 towards the enlarged part 32 to create a gap between the restricted parts of the tube and cover to receive a part of the tress of hair. Subsequently finger pressure is removed from the expanded part or actuator 33. It follows therefore. that the restricted part 34 due to the action of spring 31 moves towards its companion reduced part 33' of the tube and consequently the hair is appropriately gripped.
Thereafter, the enlarged or expanded part of the curler is rotated and the hair winds about the attenuated part thereof to form a small curl and to remove the latter, actuator 3| is depressed, and the curl formed may be conveniently and slidably removed from the reduced part of the curler as is well understood.
The compound curler shown in Figs. '7 and 8 is of the collapsible telescopic type. To this end it will be observed that expanded or enlarged tube 50 is provided with an enlongated slot 5| for receiving and frictionally receiving a part of the tress to be wound. Tube 50 also includes a dome shaped portion 5| having an opening 52 for slidably guiding the reduced tube 53 having a hair receiving and gripping slot 54.
Integral with tube 53 is a flared end 55 which embodies a plurality of indentations 56 adapted to removably receive spring detents 5'| struck out of the dome shaped portion 5|.
By this arrangement the reduced part of the curler may be interlocked with the expanded part thereof as illustrated in Figs. '7 and 8. In such relation, the expanded part of the curler may be used as the hair gripping and winding means and the reduced part thereof as the handle or the latter may be used as the hair gripping and windareas 18 ing means and the expanded part may be employed as the manipulator.
If it be desired to collapse the compound curler, the restricted part is rotated relative to the expanded part thereof, thus removing the detents 51 from indentations 56 and consequently the reduced part of the curler may be slidably moved within the bore of the expanded part until the flared end 55 strikes the depending stop lug 58 and in such relation only a small portion of the restricted part of the curler extends or projects beyond the dome shaped portion and if it is desired to withdraw the restricted part, the projecting portionis grasped, and pulled outwardly until the inner flared portion strikes the dome 5| at which time the restricted part is slightly rotated to interlock with the outer tube.
Since many changes can be made in the above.
methods of operation and many apparently widely difi'erent embodiments of the invention could be devised without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description and shown in the accompanying drawing should be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
