Description
I 0. M. OOTT. Writing-Tablet Blotter.
No. 214,890. Patented April 29,1879.
v ATTORNEY mPETiPs, PHcTaumoGmwm-zw. \MSNIK Nv E 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OEEroE,
CHARLES M. OOTT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,890, dated April 29, 1879 application filed February 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAS. M. OOTT, of O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tablet-Blotters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a top view of my improved tablet and blot ter. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a view of the back thereof, showing the notched guide.
This invention has relation to improvements in combined tablet and blotting-pad and the nature of the invention consists in combining, with a pasteboard or other pad, provided on one edge with a raised rib, notched at each end, and a tablet secured to said pad, with an interval between its edge and the said rib, of a blotter having on its edge a flexible material, inclosing a rod adapted to he received in the interval between the rib and tablet, and an elastic removable fastening engaged in the notches of said rib, and with the protecting ends of said rods, whereby the blotter may be brought into contact with the written portion of the face of the tablet thrown off therefrom, and the flexible connection of the said blotter with the rib prevented from reaching the tablet, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the pad or base of my improved combined blotterand tablet. This may be made of tin, zinc, wood, veneer, or pasteboard; but I usually prefer to use the latter. This pad is of rectangular form, and has secured to one edge a preferably wooden flange or rib, B, having at each end a vnotch, n.
0 indicates a tablet composed of business- I papers-such as letter or bill heads, blanks, or other similar devices-secured at one edge to said pad at such a distance from. the rib B as to leave an interval, a, between their contiguous edges.
D indicates a sheet of bibulous paper, of
slightly greater length and width than the tablet having secured at one of its edges a sufficiently wide strip, 8, of a flexible fabric, as cloth, within which is inclosed a rod, 0, usually of metal, of which the ends 2' project beyond the edges of the said fabric, as shown in Fig. 2.
05 indicates an endless flexible band, the same being usually of rubber, that is passed into the notched ends of rib B, and, being distended or stretched, is engaged over the ends t of rod 0. This fastening, being extensible, forms a species of hinge, by means of which the blotter may be brought down upon the written surface of the tablet or thrown ofl'. therefrom, as may be expedient. It also allows the blotter, the ends of the rod 0 being disengaged from the band i, to be reversed when one side thereof is exhausted, or entirely removed therefrom when required. The tablet may also be renewed when it is used up and another substituted therefor, or a blotter replaced when used up and another placed in position. By this means when a blotter becomes useless, the tablet being unexhausted, another may be substituted therefor.
The advantage of having a blotter permanently applied to a tablet and removably attached thereto is deemed so clear that further description is not herein deemed necessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a combined tablet and blotter, the combination, with a pasteboard or other pad, A, having on its edge a rib, B, notched at each end, and a tablet, G, secured to said pad at an interval from said rib, of a blotter, D, having on its edge a flexible material, 8, carrying a rod, 0, projecting beyond it, and a removable elastic band, 'i, engaged inthe notches of the rib, and with the projecting ends of said rod, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
h CHAS. M. ooTT.
