Description

PATENTED JULY 7, 1908.
M. B. SMITH APPLIANCE FOR RBMOVING FACIAL DEFBCTS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 6
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MIRONA B. SMITH, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
APPLIANCE FOR REMOVING- FACIAL DEFECTS.
T o all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MIRONA B. SMITH, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Removing Facial Defects, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates tothe class of appliances which are designed to restrain disproportionate enlargement of a persons chin and also reduce or guard against abnormal enlargement of the fleshy portion thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide an appliance of the aforesaid class, which shall be yconvenient to the person using the said appliance and shall be efficient in its operation. And to that end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the com onent )arts of the appliance as hereinafter fljescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a persons head having secured to it an appliance embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of said appliance illustrating the construction thereof.
-arepresents an elongated band or web constituting the portion of the appliance which is placed across the underside of the persons chin and is of a sufficient width to embrace by its front marginal portion a1- the lower part of the front of the chin as shown in Fig. l. Said engagement of the band serves to retain it in its required position under the chin and at the same time press the chin rearward. The end portions of said band are bifurcated as shown at li-)- in Fig. 2 for the attachment of a plurality of supporting ribbons -cl-CZ- ereinafter more fully described.
In order to prevent the end portions of the band -afrom wrinkling transversely and to sustain the bifurcations -b-bin diverging position, stays -f-fof Whaleboneor other suitable material are disposed diagonally across the end portions of the band -aand extended from the edges of said band to the ends of the bifurcations -b-b-. Suitable ribbons cover the stays Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 6, 1908.

and are sewed to the band and bifurcations thereof to secure the stays in their osition.
The band or web -a is provi( ed with two pairs of supporting-ribbons --d--clM which are attached. to the ends of' the bifurcations -b-Zrand extend divergent therefrom when applied to a persons head. The ribbons of each of said pairs are formed with loops -Z-Z- which receive slidably through them the ribbons of the other pair. The ribbons of each pair thus meet above the ear of the person and allow the ear to protrude between the ribbons as illustrated in Fig. 1. The free ends of the two pairs of ribbons are tied in two places at the to 3 of the persons head as shown at -t-tm Fig. l and are drawn taut to cause the band or web ato press on the pcrsons chin with the desired force.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. An appliance of the within described class consisting of an elongated band formed with bifurcated end portions, stays secured diagonally across the band and extending from the edges of the band to the ends of the bifurcations, and supporting-ribbons extending from the ends of said bifurcations.
2. An appliance of the within described class consisting of an elongated band and two pairs of supporting ribbons attached to the ends of said band and extending divergent therefrom, the ribbons of each pair being formed with loops receiving through them the ribbons of the other pair. i
3. The within described appliance consisting of an elongated band formed with bifurcated end iortions, stays secured diagonally across said band and extending from the edges thereof to the ends of the bifurcations, and two pairs of supporting-ribbons extending divergent from the ends of the aforesaid bifurcations, the ribbons of each pair being formed with loops receiving slidably through them the ribbons of the other pair as set forth.
