Description

Feb.'21, 1939.- M. K. RAME I 2,147,967
GLOVE Filed May 9, 195a Patented Feb. 21, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFiFlCE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a glove and has particular reference to the thumb and the manner in which the thumb is applied to the body of the glove.
Gloves as now manufactured do not conform to the natural position of the thumb of the hand.
When the thumb is held in a natural position, it
extends at an outward angle to the index finger; but the present method of manufacturing gloves does not take into consideration this fact. The present method of manufacturing gloves puts the thumb on a vertical line even with the index finger. This forces the thumb and palminto a crampedposition andthe resulting strain when the thumb is moved outwardly causes the seam to tear, unless a person buys a glove a size or two larger than the correct measure of the hand calls for.
In addition, my method of manufacturing a glove provides for a slightly conc'aved seam along the outer side edge of the palm instead of the present straight line, thereby further following the natural line of the palm and allowing for more freedom and comfort.
Therefore one object of the invention is to provide a glove having the thumb set outwardly transversely of the glove beyond the usual position to such an extent that when the glove is worn the thumb will assume its natural position and binding caused by improper location of the thumb prevented.
Another object of the invention is to so form the thumb that when it is applied to the body of the glove and turned back a portion of the body will extend longitudinally of the thumb and thus provide the body with a section extending between the thumb and the first finger and preventing tearing when the thumb is moved outwardly and rearwardly to spread the hand its full extent.
Another object of the invention is to provide a glove of such construction that while it will be of the improved construction it will have the general appearance of a glove of a conventional formation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a glove having the outer side edge of its palm so formed that it conforms to the natural shape of a persons hand.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a glove which is simple and durable in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a View looking at the inside or palm of a glove of the improved construction;
Figure 2 is a view looking at the back of the improved glove; and
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 1 but showing the thumb turned back.
The glove constituting the subject matter of this invention may be formed of pliable material such as woven fabric or soft leather, or may be knitted or crocheted. The body I of the glove has the usual back 2, and front or palm 3 which may be separately cut and sewed to each other along their edges or in the case of knitted or crocheted glove formed integral with each other. The glove may be formed with fingers 4 or formed as a mitten with the fingers omitted. The marginal edge 3 along the outer side edge of the palm of the glove is curved longitudinally as shown in order that the glove will conform to the natural curvature of this portion of a persons hand.
The thumb 5 of a fabric or leather glove is cut separate from the body and has an enlarged inner end portion or base 6 which projects forwardly from inner and outer sides of the thumb as shown at I and 8 and has a curved edge 9 extending from the extremity of the extension I to the extremity of the extension 8. Between the extensions 1 and 8 the thumb is recessed as shown at In and the companion portion of the body of the glove is formed with a tongue or extension I I Which is sewed along its margins to the edges of the recess and the extensions 1 and 8. When the thumb is in its normal position the tongue I! is folded transversely to project forwardly as shown in. Figure 2 but when the thumb is turned back as shown in Figure 3 the tongue extends towards the rear end of the glove. Therefore, the glove when worn may have the thumb freely moved outwardly and rearwardly and the thumb and fingers of the hand may be spread to their full extent Without tearing the glove between the thumb and first finger. Referring particularly to Figure 1 it will be seen that the marginal edge 9 of the base of the thumb terminates in spaced relation to the longitudinal center or midwidth 50 of the palm of the glove indicated by the dot and dash line l2. The outer side portion of the base 6 extends into the back 2 of the glove instead of having the thumb carried entirely by the inner or palm section 3 of the glove but not to such an 55 extent that the glove may be comfortably worn upon either hand and when the glove is flattened, the thumb is flattened along the line of stitching I 3 and projects diagonally from the adjacent side edge of the flattened glove instead of being folded to extend diagonally across the palm of the glove towards the opposite side edge thereof. The thumb, therefore, has its base so applied to the body portion of the glove that the thumb assumes a position corresponding to the position of a persons thumb, when the hand is placed fiat upon a table or like surface, and the glove will fit very comfortably when worn and strain transversely of the glove will be eliminated. Therefore, a per son wearing a glove of the improved construction may move the thumb as freely as when not wearing a glove.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved glove, the operation thereof and the method of applying the same to use, will be readily understood. It will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient construction for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention. 7
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A glove comprising a body having a back and a front united along their sides, the back and front being formed with a thumb receiving opening at one side of the body, a tongue formed at one end of the said thumb receiving opening, a thumb at the said side of the body straddling the body with its marginal edges and united to the body along the margins of the thumb receiving opening, said thumb being formed with a recess and the tongue of the body being disposed in the recess and united to the thumb along margins of the recess facing the palm side of the glove.
2. A glove comprising a body having a back and a front united along their sides, the back and front being formed with a thumb receiving opening at one side of the body, a tongue formed at the upper end of the thumb receiving opening a thumb at the said side of the body straddling the body with its marginal edges and united to the body along the margins of the thumb receiving opening, said thumb being formed with a longitudinally extending recess and the tongue of the body being disposed in the recess and united to the thumb along margins of the recess facing the palm side of the glove.
3. A glove comprising a body having a back and front united along their sides, one of the sides of said body being curved longitudinally and bowed outwardly to conform to the shape of a persons hand, the opposite side of the body being formed with a thumb receiving opening, a tongue disposed at the upper end of the thumb receiving opening, a thumb straddling the thumb receiving opening and united to the body along the margins of the thumb receiving opening, said thumb being formed with a recess and the tongue of the body being disposed in the recess and united to the thumb along the margins of the said recess facing the palm side of the glove.
