W. E GUNDELFINGER HANDLE FOR ELECTRIC APPLIANCES OR THE LIKE Filed July 6, 1956 Patented Feb. 14, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HANDLE FOR ELECTRIC APPLIANCES OR THE LIKE corporation of Missouri Application July 6 1936, Serial No. 89,159
1 Claim.
An object of my invention is to provide an inexpensively manufactured and simple handle for an electric appliance or the like, which can be formed and mounted in a minimum of time.
A further object is to provide a handle member for electric appliances and the like formed of a tubular element bent .U-shaped and having internally screw threaded terminal ends, means being provided for attaching the handle to a flange or other portion of an appliance, such means being in the form of a screw threaded into each end of the handle after passing through perforations in such flange.
Still a further object is to provide a handle of this character which can be mounted either at right angles to the portion to which it is attached or at an angle relative thereto.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a wafile iron showing the handle embodying my invention applied thereto, both on the base and upper grid of the waffle iron.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, showing how the handle is secured to the appliance.
Figure 4 is a similar sectional view showing a modified construction in which the handle extends at an angle relative to the appliance.
Figure 5 is a similar sectional view showing another modification; and
Figure 6 is a sectional view on a reduced scale on the line 66 of Figure 5.
On the accompanying drawing I have used the reference numeral H! to indicate an appliance base, l2 a lower grid casing and I4 an upper grid casing thereof.
My handle element is indicated generally at A and A, the handle A being for the base It! and the handle A being for the upper grid casing IA.
The handle A or A comprises a tubular element bent U-shaped to form a handle portion l6 and arms I8. The arms H3 at their terminal ends are internally screw threaded as indicated at 20. A screw 22 is adapted to screw into each terminal end, the screws being provided with heads 24.
The base III has a flange 26 provided with a pair of perforations 28 for the screws 24 of each handle 18. As clearly shown in Figure 3, the head 24 engages the inner surface of the flange 26, while the terminal end of the arm l8 of the handle A engages the outer surface of the flange. Accordingly when the screw is tightened, the handle is rigidly secured in position extending at right angles to the flange 26.
In some installations, it may be desirable to have the handle extend at an angle relative to the flange or other portion of an appliance to which it is secured. This may be accomplished as shown in either Figure 4 or Figure 5. In Figure 4' a handle A" is illustrated having the end thereof indicated at 30 at an oblique angle relative to the axis of the handle. Thus when this end contacts with a flange 26a of an appliance, the handle extends at other than a right angle to the flange. I
In order that a head 24a. of a screw 22a will properly tighten the end 30 against the flange 26a, I interpose a bushing 32 between the head and the flange. This has its left end at right angles to its axis, and its right end at an oblique angle corresponding with the end 30 as clearly shown in Figure 4.
As an alternative method for arranging the handle A at an angle relative to a flange 26b, as indicated in Figure 5, the flange may have an offset portion 34 in which a perforation 28b is provided for the screw 221). These offset portions may be wholly on the outer surface of the flange 26b, as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, whollyon its inner surface, or partially on one and partially on the other in an obvious manner.
The handle A in Figure 1 illustrates how the handle can be applied to the casing M in an obvious manner similar to the arrangement of Figure 3. The handle, of course, may be mounted on any other type of device requiring a handle, and various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of the handle without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claim any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within its scope.
I claim as my invention:
In a deviceof the class described, a wall element, a handle element and means for securing said elements together, said handle element comprising an element having internally threaded sockets in its terminal ends, and said means comprising headed screws extended through said wall element and into said terminal ends of said handle element, a portion of said wall being bent at an oblique angle relative to the general plane of the wall whereby said handle element extends at an angle to said general plane.
WILLIAM E. GUNDELFINGER.
