SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casket Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to casket handles and more particularly to that type of casket handles wherein the handle bar is suspended from the plates which are attached to the body of the casket by a pair of supporting arms. The handle bar usually consists of a body portion or tube of sheet metal or suitable material to which is secured the ornamental tip which may be made of soft metal or the like.

The connection between the tip and the "7 tube has usually been effected in the past by means of a wooden plug which is first driven into and secured in a projecting position in the open end of the tube, after which the tip is placed vupon the end ofthe tube and then secured by means of a pin or the like to the projecting end of the plug. The fastening means just described has always been used in the case of the round handle bars and has sometimes been used in the case of bars of polygonal shape. The tips have sometimes been secured upon bars of the latter shape, however, by the provision of a pin or a small brad passing through the tip and through depressions formed in the sheet metal bar, as shown in my` Patent No.. 1,030,434, granted J une 25, 1912. The presentk application aims then to provide a simplified means of connecting the handle bar to the ornamental tip `which is provided on each end ofthe same.

One object of this invention is to provide a simple and economical method of securing the tip upon the handle bar of a casket han- 4 dle, without the use of the wooden plug referred to above, although such plug` may be r employed, if desired, to give addedstrength to the bar.

'A still further object of the invention is to provide the tip and bar of a casket handle with means which may, after the tip and bar are assembled, beturned oi' bent into interlocking position so as to prevent the separation of the two parts.

In a casket handle, a handle bar, a tip adapted to be slipped upon said bar, and means for securing said parts together including a projecting member upon one of the parts, the other part being provided with means to interlock With said member, said member being bendahle to interlocking position only after the parts are adjusted to a final position relatively to each other.

4. In a casket handle, a handle bar, a tip adapted to telescopically receive said bar, a lug cut from one of said members and bendable outwardly7 after the parts have been assembled into engagement with the other member to hold said parts in position.

5. In a casket handle, a hollow handle bar, a tip therefor, a lug cut from one of said members and bendable vertically into engagement With the other member after the parts have been assembled to secure the tip upon the arm.

G. In a casket handle, ahandle bar having a lug cut therefrom, a tip provided With an opening, said lug being bendable into said opening to engage the Walls thereof to secure said parts together.

7. In a casket handle, a handle bar, a tip constructed to telescopically receive a portion of said bar and having an abutment to limit relative movement of the parts in one direction, and interengaging means on said members including a vertical lug and opening to prevent other movement thereof.

8. In a casket handle, a handle bar, a tip therefor adapted to be slipped upon the end of the bar, and a laterally projecting lug upon said bar adapted to bebent into engagement with the tip to secure said parts together.

9. In a casket handle, a handle bar, a tip provided With a slot, a projection upon said bar adapted to enter said slot When said tip and bar are assembled and to be bent into engagement With a portion thereof to prevent separation of the parts.

10. In a casket handle, a handle bar, a tip therefor, one of said members being provided With an angled slot, the other member having a projection entering one arm of said slot when the parts are assembled and arranged to be bent into the other arm thereof to lock said members together.

11. In a casket handle, a handle bar, a tip therefor provided with an angled slot and a projection struck up from the metal of the bar and adapted to enter longitudinally into one arm of said slot and to then be bent laterally into the other arm thereof to lock said parts together.

12. In a casket handle, a handle bar, and a tip therefor provided With a pair of opposing L-shaped slots, said parts being secured together by having integral portions bent upwardly from the handle bar to engage said slots.
