IDENTIFICATION PULL TAB FOR SLIDE FASTENERS George D. Knoess, New York, N. Y. Application March 15. 1931, Serial No. 13am 2 Claims.

More specifically the invention contemplatesthe provision of a stationary or interchangeable pull tab for a slide plate of any description, shape or size to be used on a slide operated fastener of the zipper type.

Still further the invention contemplates the provision of a pull tab which may be actually or originally used on a slide plate operated 15 fastener.

Still further.the invention proposes a pull tab for the slide body or slide plate of a hookless fastener which is designed for use on various articles such as sport jackets andsweaters, uniform jackets, lumber jackets, Windbreakers, dresses, bags and satchels, brief cases, tobacco pouches, galoshes, boots, shoes and leggings or similar articles on which hookless fasteners are used to advantage.

35 Still further the invention proposes the construction of a pull tab for a slide plate constructed of a material such as metallic or any other substance which has a'hardness that permits it to be suitably inscribed by stamping or otherwise marked with identification indicia.

As a further object of the .present invention, it is proposed to construct the ordinary pull tab support, which is-usually fixedly mounted on the sliderplate or body, as commonly known and used on slide fasteners of various manufactures, with a pivot or swivel end to be secured to the upper wing of the slide plate by means of a rivet head which permits freedom of rotation of the pull tab; the other end of said pull tab support is to be eye or loop shaped, to permit the between a number of slide fasteners and being o suitably initialed, monogrammed, or otherwise inscribed for proving and safe-guarding the ownership of the. articles upon which it is used.

This interchangeable construction provides for opposed finger portions which are pivotally 55 mounted on the slider plate and which may be engaged in the loop portion on the face-of the slide body.

Still further the invention provides for a leaf spring to be either in one piece'with, or to be fixedly mounted on the underside of the pull tab 5 g which may be optionally and alternately engaged in the looped support member on said slide plate on any of the hookless fastener types for releasably holding the pull tab in position.

A further provision of the invention is to provide a pull tab consisting of a bottom section suitably inscribed, and a top section releasably connected to the bottom sectionand being pro-' vided with a window opening through which the engraved portion may be viewed. v

As a further object of the invention it is proposed to construct the pull tab of various shapes, designs, and sizes which may be either originally mounted on the slide plate or which may be interchangeablebetween a number of slide plates.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to. the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The stationary or interchangeable, plain or ornamented identification pull tab in Fig. 1, accordingto this invention, is associated with a body portion ill of a garment or similar article on the open sides of which there is mounted rows of zipper or slide fastener elements II. A slide plate I2 is associated with the zipper elements II and is adapted to be moved to open or close them. The slide plate i2 consists of the usual slide body l2" and a looped support l2, which is for the purpose to interchangingly receive and holda leaf spring extending from the pull tab l3 and engaging in looped portion of support l2. Said pull tab support I2 is rotatably mounted on the slide body l2 to permit rotation of said support l2, thus giving to said pull tab a rotary and pivotal function or more specifically a double action in its movement. A suitable identification mark I4 is provided upon the faces of the pull tab I3 which pivotally engages the looped support l2 of the slide plate l2 and is to -be used to properly identify the article on which such pull tab 13 is mounted in conjunction with the slide fastener. may be an initial or any similar group of initials or identification marks which would serve to show the ownership of the article.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 it vfill be noted that the pull tab 20 shown in Fig. 3 may be constructedof different shapes and material and be suitably provided with identification marks 24, also theleaf spring 41, the rotatably niounted support i2 on the slide plate I2 is shown.

According to the modificatlon'of the device shown in Fig. 5 a triangular pull tab is provided with a suitable identification mark 25 running parallel with the hypothenuse of the triangular element 25. This triangular element 25 is associated-with a slideplate I2 for opening and closing the zipper elements II.

In the modification shown in Fig. 6 a pull tab II is shown which has a contour of a plant leaf and which is impressed with markings representing the veins of the leaf. In connection with this form of bull tab it is pointed out that the tab may have any desired ornamental shape and be initialed or monogrammed and decorated with suitable material or markings which wouldharmonize with the chosen shape,-

In Fig. 9 a commonly known and used pull tab constructed with a leaf spring 41'- according to this invention isshown which is suitably provided with the initials 45 of the person wearing or otherwise possessing the object upon which it is used. In Fig. 10 a pull tab 41 is shown with'the downwardly projecting extension 41' which forms a resilient leaf spring 41*, held against the bottom face 4l of the pull tab 41. The free end 41 of the resilient extension 41 is turned away from the bottom face 41 to permit easy engagement of the loop over the loop portion l2 on a slide plate l2.

According to the modification shown in Figs. 11-13 a pull tab is shown which consists of a bottom section 50 and a top section 50". The

.bottom section 50 is suitably inscribed with identification marks 5| and is viewable through a window opening 52 in the top section 50 A piece of glass 53 or similar translucent material is mounted in the window opening 52 to protect the engraved portion 5| on the bottom section 5|.

A means is associated with the inner end of the top section for releasably engaging thepull tab on to the support loop of the slide plate 12 of a zipper. This means includes a pair .of opposed finger portions 54 which are pivotally mounted on the edge of the top section 50" by means of pintle pins 55. One of the opposed finger portions 54 is'provided with an opening 58 through which a screw 51 may be engaged. This screw 51 threadedly engages an opening 58 on the opposed finger portion 54 to-hold the finger portions 54 in position when the pull tab 50 is mounted on the support loop of the'slide plate. Screws 59 freely engage through the bottom section 50 and threadedly engage the top section 50 for holding these sections together.

The operation of the device is as follows:

When it is desired to position the pull tab 5. on'the slide plate of a "Zipper it is merely necessary to remove the screw 51 from the opening N in one of the opposed fingers 54 to permit these fingers to be pivoted. The fingers 54 are then pivoted outwards to permit them to be disengaged from the loop portion formed on the slide plate. These fingers 54 are then pivoted 'to their normal position and the screw 51 returned to its normal position within the opening 58 to hold the pull tab 50 on the loop portion of the slide plate. The operation is the same as described above when it is desired to change this pull tab 5. from one slide plate to another.

According to the modification shown in Figs. 14'

The operation of the device as shown in Figures I 1 to 10, 16 and 17,.is as follows: When it is desired to position the pull tab to a slide plate it is merely necessary to engage the free end of the leaf spring into the loop portion I! of the slide body i2, and simultaneously press inwards to cause the loop portion to pass the abutting sides of the leaf spring 41 and the pull tab. The resiliency of the leaf spring 41 is depended upon to hold the pull tab in position thereon.

In Figs. 16 and 17 the pull tab support 65 is rotatably secured to the upper wing I! of the slide body l2 by a retaining neck 66 which is riveted at 61 to form a head so as to permit rotation of the support 65. Above its axis this pull tab support is eye or loop shaped constructed and is adapted for the interchanging purpose of releasably engaging and holding a pull tab in place for operation; the free end of said pull tab support may be formed if so desired with a spherical head 88 of snap fastener type and is adapted to be engaged by a complementary (female) snap fastener member II on the pull tab II. These arrangements permit a pivoting and rotating movement of the pull tab and thus effecting a front exposure of the pull tab at all times whether same is operated for closing a hookless fastener by upward or downward movement.- When it is desired, the pull tab ll may be kept in -aligning position by engaging a post 12 which protrudes symmetrically from the pull tab H, into notch or cavity 6! in the upper wing li of the slide plate II.

The pull tab II is provided with initials 13 or other personal symbols and may be otherwise inscribed for the definite purpose of personal identiflcation of slide fastener operated objects fitted with said pull tab.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to he understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. 7

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:--

1. A slider for fasteners of the class described comprising a plate member, a pull tab member and means for removably mounting said tab on said plate member, said means comprising cooperative snap fastener elements on said tab and plate members, respectively, a pin on one of said members, the other-of said members having a complementary notch therein for engagement with said pin, whereby to prevent rotation of either of said members relative to the other.

2. A slider as claimed in claim 1, said pull tab member having indicia thereon, said pin being on said tab, said notch being in said plate member, said pin and notched member, when engaged, being adapted and arranged to hold said indicia in a pre-selected angular position relative to said fasteners.
