Patented Jan. 24, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE My invention relates to stamp mills, and more particularly to a stamp mill utilizing center feed stamps.
Among the objects of my invention are:
To provide an improved means for feeding ore to a center feed stamp; to provide an improved center feed stamp; to provide a center teed stamp having a large bearing close to the shoe; and to provide a simple center feed stamp and cooperating structure.
Other objects of my invention will be apparent or will be specifically pointed out in the description forming a part of this specification, but I do not limit myself to the embodiment of the invention herein described, as various forms may be adopted within the scope of the claims.
My invention may be more fully understood by direct reference to the drawing, wherein Fig. i is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, of a single stamp component 01 a center feed stamp mill.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation, taken as indicated by the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
A foundation 2 supports a die 2 immediately above the liner 8, and extending as continuations thereof are chuck blocks 5, the liner and chuck blocks forming a pulp space 6 around the die. A cylindrical screen I surrounds the chuck blocks 5 at the lower end, and extends upwardly to connect with a cylinder 8, thus providing a circular outlet for pulp, the periphery of the screen I being half surrounded by collecting channel walls 9 which extend upwardly to support the cylinder 8 and the bearing assembly, and which direct all material passing through screen I into an outlet HI. Cylinder 8 extends upwardly and terminates in a bearing block I I in which is mounted a boss bearing I2 having a sealing ring l4 at the bottom thereof. Hemi-cylindrical splash plate- I2 is disposed about the exposed portion of screen I to prevent water from splashing out on the floor when the stamp battery is in operation.
A shoe [5 is positioned over and registers with die 3, and is provided at its upper end with a shoe taper I6 loosely fitting in a reverse taper in the bottom of a heavy boss l'l, so that boss and shoe may be joined on the taper by wedges I8.
Slightly above the lower end of boss I], the boss flares outwardly to form an ore collecting flange 28, and multiple ore apertures 2| extend from near the upper periphery of this flange to ward the center of the boss and. there join to form a central feed channel 22 which is continued through the shoe, and I may also prefer to continue it through the die. Flange 28 is of slightly smaller diameter than the'interior of cylinder 8 so that the boss becomes, eilectively, a piston traveling inside cylinder 8.
In the section shown in Fig. 2, it will be seen that I have flared the openings to said channels 2| so thattheir edges are adjacent around the periphery oi flange 20, thus providing for maximum ore collection during the reciprocation oi the boss. Thus, a section taken at that point, as. shown in Fig. 2, will show the boss as having a section resembling a star.
The boss I1 is continued upwardly in heavy section, and is provided with a gearing sleeve 24, preferably pressed on, the latter sleeve working against bearing I2 and seal II. The boss ll terminates in a tapered recess 26, into which is inserted stem 26, maintained therein by a wedge bushing 21. provided with a drift pin bore 28 in order to facilitate removal of stem 26. A drift pin bore 23 is also provided at the lower end of boss I! to facilitate removal of the shoe l5.
The upper end of stem 26 is journaled in stem bearing 88 fastened to a battery post frame I, and the stem also carries tappet 8|, preferably driven by a three armed cam 32 to give a short stroke, this cam being preferably that described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 155,645, filed July 26, 1937, entitled Cam for a stamp mill.
The upper end of cylinder 6 is provided with an ore inlet 34 on one side thereof to which ore, preferably wet, may be supplied from any convenient mechanism, represented by ore chute 86.

The upper end 0! boss I1 is also In operation, ore is fed to cylinder 8 through ore inlet 84, and passes through the ore teed channels 21 into the central feed channel 22, and is fed directly to the center of the die, thereby producing an eflicient milling, as is well known in the art. Cylinder 8 completely surrounds the reciprocating boss at all levels over the path of flange 2t, and thus no ore can be thrown out of the feeding combination during oscillation therein, while splash plate l3 prevents water from being thrown out when the shoe strikes the die.
Furthermore, I have provided a large, firmly supported bearing .for the boss relatively close to the shoe, and I thus ensure good alinement of shoe until reduced to a size suiflciently small to pass out through screen I.
, My improved center feed stamp will, of course, have all of the advantages of any prior center feed stamps but has, in addition, a greatly improved feed system and a greatly improved bearing structure.
I claim:
1. In a stamp battery, a frame, a stem journaled therein, a tappet on said stem, a cam rotatably journaled in said frame so positioned and arranged as to impart rapid successive lifts to said tappet and stem when suitably energized,
a boss detachably depended from said stem, a bearing fixed to said frame and about said boss whereby said boss is maintained in axial alinement during reciprocation, arcylindrical housing extending downward fromt-saidzbearing, an ore entry port into said housing. a flanged portion extending outwardly from said boss to form a loose sliding flt within said cylinder, inwardly and downwardly extending channels formed in said flanged portion, avertically extending central channel intersecting said first described channels, a taper formed within the lower extremity of said boss, a shoe having a taper there-' on arranged to flt tightly within said boss taper, centrally apertured die positioned on said frame beneath said shoe, a liner positioned thereabout, chuck blocks set above said liner in continuation thereof, a screen surrounding said chuck block and extending to said cylinder, a splash plate surrounding the front half of said screen, and
an outlet channel disposed about saidscreen.
2. In combination with a stamp battery 'hav ing -a 'frame and a cam-actuated stem, a boss detachably attached to said stem, a centrally apertured die supported on said frame directly beneath said stem, a liner set thereabout, chuck blocksset ,above said liner, a cylindrical screen surrounding said chuck blocks, a splash plate in front of said screen, an ore outlet therefrom surrounding said screen, a cylinder coaxial with said stem extending upwardly from said ore outlet, an ore inlet and a bearing formed upon the upper portion of said cylinder, said bearing forming a sliding flt about said boss, a flange of greater diameter than said boss extending therefrom below ,said bearing, inwardly and downwardly; channels formed through said flange, a downwardly extending bore formed centrally within said boss and communicating with said channels, a taper formed within the lower terminus of said boss, and a centrally aperturedshoe having an upwardly extending taper frictionally maintained in said boss taper.
3. In combination with a frame supporting a stamp battery, a cam-actuated stamp stem, a boss detachably attached to said stem, a die supported on said frame beneath and in axial alinement with said boss, a liner positioned about said die, chuck blocks disposed above and in continuation of said liner, a cylindrical screen surrounding said chuck blocks and extending upwardly therefrom, a splash plate disposed about the front half of said screen and an ore outlet channel surrounding said screen leading the ore to the front discharge lip, a cylindrical casing extending upwardly from outer side of said ore outlet channel concentrically about said boss, 9. boss-engaging bearing formed integrally with said casing on the upper portion thereof, an ore inlet formed into said casing, flange of greater diameter than said boss formed integral therewithbelow said bearing, said flange being arranged to form a loose sliding flt within said cylindrical casing, a central ore channel extending axially-within said boss below said flange, inwardly and downwardly extending ore'channels formed in said flange and communicating with said central ore channel, an apertured shoe having an upward taper, a corresponding taper formed within the said boss, and suitable washers disposed within said taper whereby said shoe taper may be removably frictionally maintained within said boss taper.
4. Ina stamp battery having a frame supporting a cam-actuated stem, a removable boss frictionally carried by said stem, means including a transverse bore through said boss for facilitating the removal thereof, a bearing structure supported on said frame and having a sliding flt about said boss, a cylindrical housing forming an ore chamber beneath said bearing, an ore inlet thereto, a flange extending outwardly from said boss to form a loose" sliding flt with said housing, ore ports extending inwardly and downwardly through said flange and boss, a centrally apertured stamp-removably flxed to the lower portion of said bogs, and a die alined therewith flxed on said frame, means disposed about said die for collecting crushed ore, and outlet means disposed therethrough.
5. In a stamp battery, a cylindrical housing, a bow reciprocatably mounted in said housing and having a flange of a diameter approximating that of the housing to constitute with said housingan ore receiving chamber, a die positioned below said boss in alinement therewith, and ore ports extending inwardly and downwardly through said flange and boss to provide a center feed passage for said ore from said ore chamber tosaid die.
