Application December 29, 1937, Serial No. 182,310
2 Claims.
This invention relates to neckties and more especially to a form for use in connection therewith whereby the necktie can be maintained smooth and flat while packed in a box or other container and while being handled prior to use.
A further object is to provide a necktie with a form housed therein and joined thereto so that it will not become accidentally separated from the tie.
Another object is to provide a form which can be readily removed intact from the tie when said tie is to be worn but which form can be used subsequently as a pressing form on which the tie can be placed after it has been washed or otherwise cleaned, thereby insuring the maintenance of the tie in proper shape during and following the pressing operation.
A still further object is to provide a form which can be used as an information card containing instructions about washing and pressing the tie, ample space being retained preferably on one or both faces of the form for the display of advertising matter.
A further object is to connect the form to the tie in a new and novel manner without marring the appearance of the tie while mounted on the form and without interfering with the subsequent use of the device as a pressing form.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation of a folded tie provided with the present improvements, portions of the tie beingv broken away to show the form.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the necktie portions of which are opened outwardly to show the form and the means for fastening it in place.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the form.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4, Figure l.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5, Figure 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference l designates a necktie of the four-in-hand type provided with the usual lining 2.
It is a fact well known to those engaged in the manufacture and sale of neckties, that it is quite a problem to prevent the ties from becoming mussed or wrinkled while being packed or handled prior to their sale. Various means have been devised for overcoming this objection but with little success. The present invention includes a means whereby mussing or wrinkling of the tie is not only eliminated under the conditions stated but it is also made possible to readily press the tie into proper form after it has been Washed or otherwise cleaned. The invention includes an elongated strip 3 of heavy cardboard or other suitable material so shaped as to fit snugly in the wide end portion of the necktie whereby, when the strip is inserted into said end it will thrust outwardly against the side creases and hold the front and back surfaces of the tie flat and smooth.
'I'he form can be held detachably in the necktie by any suitable means. For example a triangular tab 4 can be formed by cutting converging slits 5 into the form and by placing a small amount of adhesive 6 on one face of the tab. Thus when the form is inserted longitudinally into the tie this tab, which first is pressed outwardly from the form, can be caused to lap the end of the lining 2, as shown in Figure 2. By then moistening the adhesive the tab can be caused to adhere to the lining. It is to be understood of course that the form, when inserted into the tie, occupies a position between the front of the tie and the lining.
The form 3 is placed in the tie at the place of manufacture of the tie and is retained in the tie when sold to a customer. Thus the tie can be displayed to best advantage and will not become mussed or wrinkled prior to its purchase by the user.
Before using the tie the customer lifts the tab 4 so as to tear it off of the engaged surface of the lining. The form is then withdrawn from the tie and upon it will be found instructions not only for washing the tie but also instructions for using the strip as a pressing form. It is intended that the purchaser retain this form so that it can be used subsequently when the tie is to be washed and pressed.
Following the washing of the tie and the removal of excess moisture therefrom the form is inserted thereinto with the tab 4 lying completely within the plane of the form so as not to project therefrom. The form is inserted far enough to insure the necessary lateral stretching of the tie and after the tie has been placed properly it is pressed with a hot iron and will not get out of shape during that operation because of the correctly shaped smooth form contained within the tie.
Ample advertising space can be provided on the form as shown at 1 and will be used preferably for advertising soap or other cleaning preparation recommended for cleaning the tie. In Figure 3 a preferred location of the printed instructions for washing has been shown at 8. It is also intended to mark the strip with the Words Pressing form as shown at 9 or with some other suitable designation.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a necktie havingV aA lining, said necktie being open at one end and having free longitudinal back edges adjacent to y' said end, of an elongated form tted. snugly between the lining and the front of the necktie for holding said front smooth and dat, said form' having slits dening a tab lapping and detachably engaging the back surface of one end of the lining, the tab being located between the lining and said free back edges of the necktie for convenient access when said edges are moved apart.
2. The combination with a necktie having a lining, there being free edges extending from one end of the back of the necktie, of a pressing form wedged within the necktie between the front thereof and the lining, said form having an opening, and means for detachably securing the form to the lining, said means including a tab formed in' one piece with the form and lapping one end of` the back of the lining, said tab having a lining-engaging adhesive thereon and being po- 'sitioned for exposure and access between said free back. edges of the necktie when moved apart and for movement into the opening when the form is released from the tie.
