Fhis invention relates to a combined cigarette package container and match book holder, and it is one object of the invention to provide a device of this character of such construction that a pack of cigarettes may be enclosed therein and a book of matches mounted externally of the package container in such position that a match may be easily removed and ignited.
Another object of the invention is: to provide a combined cigarette package container and match book holder of such formation that they may be very easily disposed about a packet cigarettes and prevent the cigarettes from being crushed when carried in a persons pocket and also constitute ashield serving to: prevent cigarettes from accidentally slipping out of a pack and also prevent exposed end portions of cigarettes in an opened pack from becoming contaminated.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of this character which will not only serve to prevent crushing: of cigarettes and contamination thereof but also constitute means for preventing. tobacco sifting from cigarettes in an open pack and accumulating in a pocket or hand bag. 7
Another object of the invention is, to provide a combined container for a pack of cigarettes and holder for a. book of matches, this device being formed from a. single blank of cardboard or of light sheet material folded to assume the desired outlineand secured in the folded condition by a tongue engaged through a slot.
It is another object of the. invention to so apply a book of matches; to the container that accidental displacement of the tongue which holds 1 the blank in its folded or container-forming condition will be prevented.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may serve not only as a shield and container for a pack, of cigarettes but also as an advertising medium.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which can be stamped from cardboard and very cheaply manufacturedand sold at such a, price that it maybe supplied to a purchaser Without additional cost when used as an advertising medium.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, wherein: a

Figure 13 is a view of the blank from which the container of Figure 12 is formed, and. V
Figure 14 is a view illustrating a container having its front wall formed with an opening for disclosing the portion of the cigarette package carrying the name thereof, there being also advertising matter printed upon the outer face of the wall of the container through which the opening is formed.
The container, shown in perspective in Figures 1 and 2, is stamped from the blank shown in Figure 5. This blank, which is indicated in general by the numeral l, consists of a substantially rectangular strip of sheet material, such as cardboard, and is scored to provide fold. lines 2, along which the blank is folded to form the top wall 3 and front and rear walls 4 and 5. The blank is also scored to provide fold lines 6 and I along which the blank is folded to form a bottom wall 8, and a flap 9 which is preferably disposed in overlapping relation to the lower end portion of the rear wall 5 when the blank is folded to form the container but may be disposed under the rear wall if so desired. A transversely extending tongue If] is formed by cutting a recess or slit II in the flap 9, and when this tongue is engaged through the slit l2 formed vertically or longitudinally in the inner wall 5, the flap will be held in overlapping relation to the lower portion of the rear wall and maintain the container in its set up position for use. The container is of such dimension that it will snugly receive a pack of cigarettes I3, and since the container is open at its opposite sides, the pack of cigarettes may be partially dislodged by applying pressure at one side thereof, as shown in Figure 1, and thus permit one of the cigarettes l4 to be withdrawn through the torn corner portion I5 of the wrapper for the cigarettes. The pack of cigarettes may then be thrust back into place within the container, and since the container is formed of relatively stifi' material, it will constitute a shield and prevent crushing of the cigarettes when placed in a persons pocket. The fact that the torn corner portion l5 of the pack of cigarettes will be disposed under the top wall 3 of the container will prevent the cigarettes 'from accidentally sliding out of the package and in addition prevent the exposed end portions of the cigarettes from becoming contaminated. sifting A of tobacco from ends of the cigarettes will also be prevented and accumulation of tobacco in a pocket or hand bag which would result therefrom eliminated. In order that a book of safety matches l6 may be applied to the container, the rear wall 5 is formed with a longitudinally extending slot IT. This slot extends longitudinally of the rear wall from adjacent the lower end thereof and is so located that, when the tongue I!) is engaged through the slit l2, the edge I8 of the flap 9 will be disposed flush with the inner side edge of the slot, and the edge l9 of the tongue 9 extends transversely of the wall 5 under the lower end of the slot. The backing or folder of the book of matches may, therefore, be passed through the slot and the portion 29 thereof forming a closure flap disposed in shielding relation to the matches with its free end engaged under the retainer flap 2| to which the striking substance is applied.
The fact that the flap 9 has its corner portion cut away to provide the edges 18 and I9 permits the backing for the book of matches to be drawn through the slot I! to such an extent that the flap M will be located inwardly from the adjacent side edge of the wall 5 or substantially flush therewith if so desired and thus permit packs of cigarettes having the container applied thereto to be stacked upon a shelf in a store in the usual manner. The exposed portion of the outer face of the wall 5 above the book of matches may be used for advertising purposes and advertising matter may also be printed or otherwise applied to the front wall 4 and the top and bottom walls 3 and 8. Therefore, the device will serve as an advertising medium as well as serving as a container for a pack of cigarettes and holder for a book of matches. As a book of matches will be applied to each container and the number of matches in a book corresponds to the number of cigarettes in a pack of cigarettes, a supply of matches will be at hand for the cigarettes.
In Figure 6, there has been shown in perspective a modified form of container which is formed from the blank shown in Figure 9 and indicated in general by the numeral 22. In this embodiment of the invention, the blank is folded along the fold lines 23 and 24 to form the top and bottom 25 and 26 and front and rear walls 21 and 28 for the container together with the flap 29 extending upwardly from the bottom 26 for overlapping the lower end of the wall 28. The flap 29 has one corner portion cut to provide a transversely extending tongue 30 for engagement through the slit 3| to hold the flap in overlapping relation to the wall 28, and in order to accommodate a book of matches, the wall 28 is formed with an upper transversely extending slot 32 and a lower slot 33 which registers with the slot 34 of the flap. The backing or folder of the book of matches may, therefore, be threaded through the slots34 and. 33 and then extended upwardly and outwardly through the slot 32, as shown in Figure '7. The book of matches will thus serve to' securely hold the flapin overlapping relation to the wall28. and prevent the tongue 30 from accidentally slipping out of the slit 3|, and when the closure flap of the book of matches is engaged under the companion flap carrying the striking substance, the
matches in the book will be enclosed and shielded from accidental ignition. The end portion of the blank forming the wall 28 is provided with a side extension 35 which is folded along the fold line 36 and the line 31 to form aside wall 38 for the container carrying a tongue orlip 39. which extends inwardly against the inner face ofthe wall 21. Therefore, one side of the container will be closed but the container will be open at its other, side, and when a pack of cigarettes is enclosed in the container, pressure may be applied to the side wall 38 adjacent its tongue 39 to partially eject the pack of cigarettes through the open side of the container and permit removal of a cigarette through a torn end portion of the top of the wrapper of the pack of cigarettes. In view of the fact that the container is closed at one side by the wall 38, there will be provided an additional surface for advertising purposes and there will be less likelihood of tobacco sifting from the cigarettes and into a persons pocket.
Another modified form of container has been shown in perspective in Figure 10, and this container is formed from the blank shown in Figure 11. This blank 40 is somewhat similar to the blank 22 as it is formed with a side extension 4|. The blank is folded along the transversely extending fold lines 42 and 43 to form the front and rear walls 44 and 45 and top and bottom walls 46 and '41 together with the flap 48 which extends upwardly from the bottom wall 41 for overlapping engagement with the lower portion of the wall 45. The side extension 4| is folded along the scored line 49 to form a side wall 50 and the outer side edge portion of the extension is folded along the scored line 5| to provide a tongue or lip 52 which extends inwardly from the side wall 50 for engagement with the inner surface of the wall 44. This side of the container will thus be closed by a movable side wall. The lower portion of the side extension 4| and adjoining portion of the main body of the blank are cut to form a recess 53, and when the side extension is folded to form the side wall 50, the recess forms a corner opening through which an upper 'corner portion of a pack of cigarettes P will be exposed when housed in the container. The type of cigarette pack for which this container is intended has the seam of its outer cup-wrapper P extend ing along an end wall adjacent one side edge thereof and the inner wrapper P has its overlapped side edges disposed under the said side wall of the cup wrapper. It will thus be seen that the exposed upper portion of the cup wrapper P may be grasped at the seam and torntowards the right in Figure 1 along edges of the recess and the remainder of the exposed portion of this wrapper then torn towards the left along the edges of the recess. The inner wrapper P may then be grasped and torn towards the left of Figure 1 along the top P of the wrapper and along edges of the recess and upper portions of cigarettes will be exposed throughthe recess or opening. It is then merely necessary to grasp the flap 54 together with the corner portion of the top P' of the inner wrapper and when the flap is turned upwardly along the line of scoring 55, the corner portion of the top of the wrapper will be torn loose and carried upwardly with it to expose upper ends of the cigarettes so that they may be easily grasped and withdrawn. The flap and the underlying corner portion of the top of the inner wrapper may then be swung downwardly to cover upper ends of the exposed cigarettes and act as a shield for them. The slit 56 through which the transversely extending tongue 51 of the flap is passed is of arcuate outline instead of straight out, and in order that the backing for the book of matches may be passed through the wall 45,. there has been provided a slit58 which is U-shaped and has its arm formed with extensions 59 extending longitudinally of the wall and provided with deflected ends 69. By so cutting the slit, there will be provided a tongue 6| and the backing or holder for the book of. matchescan be very easily passed inwardly through the slit to mount the book of matches transversely of the container.
The container shown in perspective in Figure 12 is open at both sides the same as the container illustrated in Figure 1 and is formed from the blank 6| shown in Figure 13'. This blank is substantially' oblong in shape and is folded along the transversely extending scored lines 62 and 63 to form the front and rear walls 64 and 65 and the top and bottom walls 66 and 61 together with the flap 58 which extends upwardly from the bottom 61 in overlapping relation to the wall 65 where it is held by the transversely extending tongue 69 passed through the V-shaped slit 10 cut in the lower portion of the wall 5'5. A transversely extending slot H is cut in the flap to register with the cut-out or recess 12 formed at the lower end of the wall 65, and attention is called to the fact hat the cut-out or recess has side extensions 13 so that, when the backing or folder for abook of matches is passed inwardly through the registering slots and recess or cut-out 12, the folder will have inter-locking engagement with the lower end portion of the wall 45. After the folder or backing of the book of matches has been passed inwardly, it is then passed outwardly through the slit I4 extending transversely of the wall 6'5 and may then be brought downwardly into enclosing relation to the matches of the book which will be disposed externally of the container. The intermediate portion of the slit is U-shaped, as shown at T5, to form atongue 16 constituting means to facilitate outward movement of the backing through the slit l4, and
ends of the slit are directed laterally longitudinallyzof the wall 65, as shown at H, so that, when the backing of the book of matches is passed through the slit, tearing an extension of the slit through the side edges of the wall 65 will be pre vented. Anopening 18 is formed in the upper end of the wall 65 intermediate the width thereof to expose a portion of a pack of cigarettes having the seams or overlapped edge portions of its cup wrapper P and inner wrapper P" extending midway the width of its rear wall, and the upper wall 66 of the container is cut along the diagonally extending line 19 to form a flap which is to be bent upwardly along the line of scoring 8|. In this embodiment of the invention the pack of cigarettes is placed into the container through either side with the seam of the cup wrapper P facing the wall 65 and the exposed upper portion of the cup wrapper grasped and pulled towards the right so that it will be torn from the top P and along edges of the opening "iii, the remainder of the exposed portion of the cupwrapper being then torn towards the left from the top and along edges of the opening. The overlapping portion of the inner wrapper P" is then torn towards the left along edges of the opening and the cigarettes will be exposed so that, when the flap 853 is grasped with the underlying portion of the top P" and bent upwardly and the upwardly bent portion of the top torn loose, cigarettes may be easily removed from the pack. The flap and the underlying portion of the top P may then be returned to a lowered position for shielding the upper ends of the cigarettes. It will thus be seen that in this embodiment of the invention as well as that illustrated in Figure 10, it is not necessary to partially eject a pack of cigarettes from the container in order to remove cigarettes therefrom.
Instead of merely printing advertising matter upon the wallsef the container, provision ma be made for effecting a double or combination advertisement. Such an arrangement is illustrated in Figure 14 wherein the front wall 82 of the container 33 is formed with an opening 84 through which the portion of the pack of cigarettes 85 hearing the name thereof is displayed when the pack of cigarettes is enclosed in the container. While the opening 84 has been 1 shown at the center of the wall it will be understood: that it may be otherwise located in case the disposition of the name upon the pack of cigarettes necessitates such a change. Above the opening 8d the wall 82 has printed thereon advertising matter, as shown at 86, and below the opening 84 advertising matter 81 which is companion to the advertising matter 83 is printed upon the wall. In the present instance, the advertising matter 85 consists of the words Does Soda and and the advertising matter 8? consists of A Hit Combination. When the advertising slogan formed by the advertising matter 86 and 81 is considered in connection with the name of the cigarettes displayed through the opening 3'4, a slogan constitutin a boost for the particular product printed upon the container and the make of cigarettes displayed through the opening 84 will be produced. It will thus be seen that the two companies which do not compete with each other could combine their advertising in a very effective manner or one company selling products in addition to cigarettes could very effectively combine advertising for both products. If so desired, the opening 84 may be cut in the shape of the trade-mark of the product named at the top of the wall 82 or in the shape of the product or its container and more effectively call attention to the advertising matter. It will also be obvious that, if so desired, the advertising matter 86 and 81 shown upon the wall of the container in Figure 14 may be omitted and the opening merely serve to disclose the name of the cigarettes.
