1933- J. K. DARRAGH DISPLAY BOX EASEL cov'Em Filed Jan. 14, 1936 Patented Dec. 13, 1938 v 2,140,000
UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE DISPLAY BOX EASEL COVER- John K. Darragh, Astoria, N. Y., asslg'nor to Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company, Long Island City, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application January 14, 1936, Serial No. 59,011
Claims. (01. 206-44) The present invention relates to display. easels and 26 are side flanges 21 and 28, each 01' which and more particularly to the class of easels used is provided with a lateral front brace 30 separated for supporting in display position a cardboard from its adjoining side flange by a fold line 3|. box in such a manner that its contents will be on Adjoining the box supporting section l3 and view. separated from it by a fold line 33 is the front 5 An object of the invention is to provide such easel face 35 which extends from the box supan easel which will support a cardboard box on porting sections i3 between the lateral front one end in tilted position with its contents disbraces 30. closed to view. Separated fromthe front easel face 35 by a Another object is to provide such a display fold line 3'! is the inner front face section 38 10 easel which constitutes in another relative posiand adjoining the inner front face section 38, tion of its parts a box top for the cardboard box separated from it by the fold line 39, is the supwhich as an easel it is to support in display posip rt s t locking flange tion. To the right of the box back rest II, as viewed A further object of the invention is to provide in Figure 1, d separated from it y the 101d such a display easel in a single piece so formed ne Pa t O which is slotted as at is the that from its relatively flat condition as a box easel back 45 P d With e a y extending top it can, by a simple movement, be transformed easel back braces t1 and 48 separated from it by into a display easel for supporting the cardboard the fold lines 49' and 50.

The inner front face relative positions they occupy while the easel s t 3 s d d upw rd y through along constitutes a box top; fold line 31. The blank of Figure 1 has a substantially cen- The easel lockin ta e 5 r o d trally located box back rest H to the left of either upwardly or downwardly through 180. which, as viewed in Figure 1, is a box supporting The easel bottom inner section is folded upsection I3, separted from the back rest II by fold wardly thr along Partially s10tted fold lines it and I1 and intermediate the fold lines line 58. The easel bottom outer section 55 is a slot l9. 7} folded upwardly through somewhat more than n The box supporting section l3 has a portion of along fold line 52. The easel back braces 50 its face slotted to form a lock tab 2! which is 41 and 48 are folded upwardly through 90 along separated from the adjoining portion of the box fold lines 49 and 50 respectively. The easel back supporting section l3 by a fold line 22. 45 isfolded upwardly through nearly along Along opposite side edges of the box supporting fold line 43. The box back rest II is folded 55 section and separated therefrom by fold lines 25 downwardly along fold lines It and I1 through 56 90. This brings the easel locking tab 63 opposite the slot l9 through which it is thrust while its ends 65 are folded over after which the ends 65 may be released. This brings the box back rest II, the easel back 45 and easel bottom into substantially the position of Figure 5.
The lateral front braces 30 and the side flanges 21 and 28 have been folded so that the lateral front braces 30 lie along fold line 33. The inner front face section 38 is folded over these lateral braces toward the box supporting section 13 so that the lateral front braces 30 lie between the easel front face 35 and the inner front face section 38, which brings the fold line 39 adjacent fold line 33 and brings the locking flange 40 along the end face of the box supporting section. The lock tab 2| is pushed up so that the locking flange 40 can contact the end face of the box supporting section l3, whereupon the lock tab can be released, after which it holds all the sections 40, 39, 35, 30, 2! and 28 in the folded position of Figures 4 and 5.
The partially slotted fold line 58 permits the easel bottom outer section 55 to be folded down upon the easel bottom inner section 80, as shown in Figure 4, which brings the easel back and the easel bottom outer section 55 into the same plane so that the box back rest II can be folded to bring it into alignment with the box supporting section I3. With the parts in this position (Figure 4) the easel back 45 and the easel back braces 41 and 48 lie along and in contact with the box back rest I I, so that the underside of the display easel is now substantially flat and it can be used as the top of the box, as shown in Figure 2.
Folding along fold lines l6 and I! brings the box top into the position of Figures 3, 5 and 6. Therefore when the display easel used as the top of a box B, as shown in Figure 2, is removed therefrom and folded along fold lines l6 and IT the box B may be placed upon the slanting box supporting section l3 with the box bottom resting against the box back rest I I and the box interior and contents disclosed to view.
It will be noted that the invention provides a single device which is both a box cover and a display easel; the section l3 constitutes a support for one end of the box B; the back rest section II is a rest or abutment for the box bottom; and the sloping flanges 21 and 28 not only provide a means for positioning the cover on the box, but also, in the display easel position of the'parts, serve to maintain the box support section [3 in box tilting position; the parts fold to form the substantially flat box cover of Figure 2, and from this position, from the display easel by one fold, namely, along lines l6 and I1. The invention may thus be sent out by a manufacturer as a cover for the box containing his goods, and. when received by a retailer, may be used as an easel to display the goods, and, moreover, display them in the box in which they were shipped.
