JOHN C. DE WITT, 0F WEST BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 HIMSELF, AND TERAH BENEDIGT, OF NEWTARK, NEIV JERSEY.
TRACE-FASTENING.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 21,394, dated August 31, 1858i.
To all 'whom may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. DE IITITT, of Vest Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Buckle or Fastening for Securing Harness-Traces to Hame-Tugs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is an external view of my invention applied to a haine tug. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section of dit-to, taken in the line :0, Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal section of ditto, taken in the line y, y, Fig. l. Fig. 1l, is a transverse section of ditto taken in the line a, e, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is t0 obtain a buckle or fastening for securing the traces of harnesses to their haine tugs without injur-ing the traces as is the case with the ordinary buckle and at the same time to obtain also a fastening that will admit of a ready adjustment and form a sure connection.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents. a halne tug and B, a loop attached thereto as usual. The tug also is attached to its hame in the usual manner. To the tug A, and near its back end a metal plate C, is attached by rivets or other proper means. This plate is of taper form and has a slot a, made in it at the center of its width, and near its front end. The form of the plate and slot is plainly shown by dotted lines in Fig. l. To each side of the plate C, there is a pivot 79, and these pivots are fitted and work in slots which are made in the sides al, d, of a metal frame D, which forms the body of the buckle or fastening and to the outer side e, of which a tongue j", is attached at rightangles see Fig. 2.
The whole of the frame or body D, of the buckle or fastening may be cast in one piece and the space between the sides d, d, of the frame is s'uiiciently wide to allow the trace E, to pass freely between, see Fig. 4. The trace E, is perforated to receive the tongue f.
The trace E, it will be seen is secured by the tongue f, passing through either of the holes in the trace and the frame D, is keptin proper position or in a closed state by shoving back the frame D, so that the piv ots will be in the front parts of the slots c, of the sides ci, eZ, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the inner end of the tongue fitting and working in the slot a. Vhen the trace is to be detached from the tug the frame D, is shoved forward until the pivots are at the back ends of the slots c, and the fra-me D, may then be turned outward and the trace freed from the tongue f, as shown in red Fig. 3.
By this invention the trace is not injured as is the case with the ordinary buckle in consequence of the bow or frame bearing against or upon it. The trace also when necessary may be more readily attached to and detached from the tug than by the ordinary buckle.
I am aware that buckles have been formed with tongues so arranged as to pass through the perforations of traces at right angles and I therefore do not claim broadly such device, but
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The frame or body D, provided with the tongue f projecting from it at right angles, when the frame or body is connected with the plate C, of the tug A, by means of the pivots b, Z2, of said plate fitting in oblong slots c, in the sides d, ci, of the frame or body, so that the same may be shoved forward and backward to admit of its being locked and also of being opened substantially as described.
JOHN C. DE W'ITT.
