IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE-BOX LIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,696, dated March 25, 1879 application filed January 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES SEATH, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Oil- Box Cover, of which the following is a specification:

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to construct an oil-box cover,and so secure it that it will make a tight joint with the box when closed. When open it will keep upon the box through its own weight, and it cannot be removed from the box without first removing the box from the axle on which it may be placed.
In the drawings, A is the box-cover, with inside grooves, a a, in its ends. B is the oilbox, with raised tongues or ribs 1) b, which engage in the grooves a a and hold the cover on the box.
It will be seen that the curve of the ribs or tongues does not exactly coincide with the curve of the grooves. This difference between the two secures the better holding and tightening of the cover to the box.
0 is a handle, to take hold of in. moving the box. At D is the opening into the oil-box, which is closed by the cover A. The dotted lines E, Fig. 1, indicate the position of the cover when open.
It is obvious that I may secure the curved oil-box cover to the box by placing the raised ribs or tongues on the cover, and the corresponding grooves in the sides of the box, thus reversing the arrangement herein shown, and accomplish the object for which they were designed; and in some instances I prefer to do so.
I am aware that it is not, broadly, new to secure an oil-box cover on a curve and by tongue and groove; but
What I claim is- The combination of cover A, with curved inside end grooves, a a, and the box B, with curved ribs b b, the curves of said ribs and grooves being on the arcs of circles slightly eccentric to each other, as and for the purpose specified.
