Description

A. H. GREENE. Lantern.
No. 213,650. Patented Mar. 25, 1879 Ivwgnio-r,
MPEI'ERS, PHOTO-LIFHDGRAPHER. WASHXNGYON D C UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
ARTHUR H. GREENE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
lM PROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,650, dated March 25, 1879; application filed Japuary 31, 1879.
To all whom it may concern- Be it knownthat I, ARTHUR H. GREENE, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Lockin g and Fastenin g Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a lantern fastened by rods above the rim, as stated in my invention. Fig. 3 is a view of the rod on the under side of the lantern, with the loops fastening below the rim.
The invention relates to a method of fastening and locking lanterns at the top and bottom; and the object is to fasten lanterns so that no person without a key can open the lantern or tamper with the light thereof.
The invention consists in the arrangement of rods or bars, to be applied as hereinafter set forth, about a lantern in which the metallic top is removable-as, for instance, a lantern which has a hinge on one side of the top.
A rod, A, fastened at the top of the lantern with a hinge or other device, B, on the inside, opposite the hinge 0, runs perpendicularly down the side of the lantern, and terminates in a loop, D, at the upper or lower side of the lower rim.
Another rod, E, is attached under the under rim of the lantern by a hinge, F, or other suitable device, in a vertical line with the hinge at the top of the lantern, and passes underneath and across the oil-fount of the lantern and to or through the lower rim, and ending in a loop, so as to meet and connect with the loop D of the perpendicular rod, either loop passing through the other in such a way as to be fastened with a padlock.
What I claim is- A combination of rods or bars having a hinge on one end and a loop on the other, one passing from the top to the bottom of the lantorn, and the other bar passing horizontally along the under side of the lantern, and the two loops fastened together, either above or below the under rim, by means of a padlock passing through the loops at the ends of the bars or rods, the upright rod passing down opposite the hinge on the metallic top of the lantern, so that the top cannot be lifted without the removal of the upright rod.
ARTHUR H. GREENE.
