Another object of the present invention isto provide aroad-roller in which the fork-shaped bow members or axle-holders for holding the front and rear rollers are situated horizontally and in which saidmembers are provided with transverse parts which are individually provided with curved surfaces which abut one. another and are located between and guided by plateshaped parts, which parts carry bolts which are adapted to cooperate with and move in curved slots provided in said transverse members, and one of said parts being adapted to carry the drivingmotor of said road-roller, the driving. mechanism and other equipment of the road roll- 'ing machine.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a road-roller, the effective rolling width of which can be adjusted at any operating condition of the roller and in which the position of the axes of the rollers can be changed individually with respect to one another when the machine is standing still as well as when it is in motion, whereby movement of the machine through curves and at voluntarily variable effective rolling width is made possible. with the mechanism according to the present invention, the position of the axis of each individual roller can be changed while that of the other roller is not changed, and it is also possible to change the position of front and rear rollers simultaneously.
With conventional road-rollers, undulations on the road surface are caused by the substantially horizontally swinging motions made by the upright bows. Due to the horizontally positioned and abutting bows of the machine according to the present invention, this disadvantage is nated. 1
The present invention is applicable to .threeroller machines as wellas to tandem machines and can be used in combination with steam power or other power drives.

Referring-more particularly to the. drawings: the axles 2 and 2' of the rollers or'rolling drums' I and I carry the horizontally p'ositioned-axleholders or how members 3 and 5. Member 3 is provided with a curved surface 3' forming part of a cylinder with substantially vertical-axis. A curved surface 4 is provided also in connection with member 5. The bow members 3 and 5 are adapted to move in between guiding members such as. the plate-shaped members and I5 of 3 the illustrated embodiment. The guiding members l4 and I 5are interconnected by means; of bolts 6 and 6' and pressed togetherby springs 23 and 23',.respectively, which are associated with said bolts and permit movement of said bolts in 35 They upper member 15 carries the motor-l9, the gear box 1, and other equipment of the machine which are not shown in detail because they do not form part of the present invention. At least one of the axle-holders, in the embodiment of the pres ent invention shown, axle-holder 5, may be pro-v vided with an intermediary part 4 which is connected with axle-holder 5 in such manner that vertical motions of one part relative to the other' 5' are possible. Part 4 is provided with'said curved surface 4 which abuttingly cooperates with the previously mentioned surface 3. Turning 01 pinion l6 and/or I6 is effected by revolving the hand wheels I! and/or [8. To these hand wheels, bevel gears 20 and 20', respectively, are connected which are individually connected to and adapted to drive shafts 2| and 2i, respectively, to which spur gears 22 and 22 are connected, respectively. These spur gears are connected to and adapted to individually drive pinions l6 and I6, respectively. By manipulation of the hand wheels l8 and/or IS, the position of the axes of rollers l and/or l' is changed jointly or individually.
Connected with one of the guide members I4 and ii are wedge-shaped parts l2 which, at the position of the mechanism shown in Fig. 2, fill the space between the curved surfaces 3' and 4 and the members I 4 and l 5 and thereby aid in the stability of the machine.
By suitable operation of the pinions l6 and i6, the position of the axes of rollers l and I may be changed in such a manner that said axes move parallel to one' another, whereby the operating width of the machine is changed as is shown in Fig. 3, or the angle enclosed by the axes 2 and 2 is changed as sh wn in Fig. 4, whereby the machine is adapted to move around curves of any radius. By suitaqe combination of an operation according to Fig. and Fig. 4, any rolling width can be adjusted aliio when moving around curves. 0n turning pinion; l6 and/or pinion l6, bolt 6 and/or 6' moves in the guide slot l1 and/or I'I'. Due to the frictiori of surfaces 3' and 4' of the gears 2|], 20', 22, arid 22, the once adjusted position of the axles 2 and 2' remains until the next adjustment takes place.
The power of motor I9 is transmitted through suitable gearing, which is located in box I and not shown in detail because it is not a part of the present invention, to shafts 8 and 8' which are provided with universal joints 24, 25 and 24', 25', respectively, and which shafts by means of bevelled gears 9 and 9', respectively, drive spur gears [0, II and III, ii, respectively. Gear wheels II and H are connected with and drive rollers I and I, respectively.
While I believe the above described embodiments of my invention to be preferred embodiments, I wish it to be understood that I- do not desire to be limited to the exact details of design and construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art What I claim is:
1. In a road roller, the combination 01' at least two rolling drums, an axle and a substantially horizontal axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders being arranged substantially at one side of their associated drums so as to face each other, a guiding member on top of said axleholders and between said drums for holding said axle-holders in a substantially horizontal plane,
said axle-holders being movably connected to said guiding member so as to be rotatable relatively thereto, and an individually controllable gear for each of said drums on said guiding member for altering the positions of said axle-holders, independently of each other, relatively to said guiding member.

In a road roller, the combination of at least having bow-shaped portions so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, and a guiding member on top of said axle-holders and between said drums for holding said axle-holders in a. substantially horizontal plane, said axle-holders being movably connected to said guiding member so as to be individually,
rotatable relatively thereto. i
3. In a road roller, the combination of at leas two rolling drums, an axle and a substantially horizontal axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders being arranged substantially at one side of their associated drums respectively and having bow-shaped portions so arranged as to abut against each other, with said bow-shaped portions, a guiding member on top of said axleholders and between said drums for holding said axle-holders in a substantially horizontal plane, and means on said guiding member for individually turning said holders relatively to said guiding member.
4. In a road roller, the combination of at least two rolling drums, an axle and a substantially horizontal axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders being arranged substantially at one side of their associated drums respectively and having bow-shaped portions so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, and two guiding members between said drums, one of said guiding members being arranged above the other one for holding said axleholders in a substantially horizontal plane, said axle-holders being arranged between said guiding members and movably connected thereto so as to be individually rotatable relatively thereto.
5. In a road roller, the combination of at least two rolling drums, an axle and a substantially horizontal axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders being arranged substantially at one side of their associated drums respectively and having bow-shaped portions so arranged. as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, two guiding members between said drums, one of said guiding members being arrang'ed above the other one, for holding said axleholders in a substantially horizontal plane, said axle-holders being arranged between said guiding members, and means on the upper guiding member for individually turning said holders relatively to said guiding members.
6. In a road roller, the combination of at least two rolling drums, an axle and a substantially horizontal axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders being arranged substantially at one side of their associated drums respectively and having bow-shaped portions so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, t'wo guiding members, one above the other one, for holding said axle-holders in a substantially horizontal plane, said guiding member being resiliently connected to each other, said axle-holders being arranged between said axleholders and movably connected thereto, so as to be individually rotatable relatively thereto.
'7. In a road roller, the combination of at least two rolling drums, a substantially horizontal axle and an axle-holder for each of said ruins, said axle-holders being arranged substantially atone side of their associated drums respectively'and having bow-shaped portions so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, two guiding members, one above the other one, for holding said axle-holders therebetween in a substantially horizontal plane, and connecting bolts for said guiding members, said bolts engaging said holders respectively in curved slots provided in said holders so as to permit said axle-holders to rotate relatively to said guiding members.
8. A device as claimed in claim 7 in which each bolt is provided with a spring bearing against one of said guiding members to hold them in resilient engagement with said axle-holders.
9. A road roller comprising at least two drums, an axle and a substantially horizontal axle-holder for each of said drums, a motor and a transmission for driving said drums, said axle-holders being arranged substantially at one side of their associated drums respectively and having bowshaped portions so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, two guiding members between said drums, one of said guiding members being arranged above the other one, for holding said axle-holders therebetween in a substantially horizontal plane, and controllable means for individually turning said axle-holders relatively to said guiding members, said motor and transmission and said controllable means being mounted on said upper guiding member.
10. In a road roller, the combination of at least two rolling drums, an axle and an axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders having bowshaped portions and being so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, two guiding members, one above the other one, for holding said axle-holders therebetween in a substantially horizontal plane, connecting bolts for said guiding members, said bolts engaging said axle-holders respectively in curved slots provided therein, toothed surfaces in rigid connection with said axle-holders respectively, pinions in engagement with said toothed surfaces of said axle-holders and pivoted in said guiding members, and individual driving means for said pinions on top of said upper guiding member.
11. In a road roller, the combination of at least two rolling drums, an axle and an axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders having bowshaped portions and being so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, a guiding member for holding said axleholders in a substantially horizontal plane, wedgeshaped members between said axle-holders and attached to said guiding member, bolts for movably connecting said axle-holders respectively to said guiding member, said bolts engaging said axle-holders in curved slots provided therein, and means for individually turning said axle-holders relatively to said guiding member.
12. In a road roller, the combination of at least two rolling drums, an axle and a substantially horizontal axle-holder for each of said drums, said axle-holders being arranged substantially at one side of their associated drums respectively and having bow-shaped portions so arranged as to abut against each other with said bow-shaped portions, at least one of said axle-holders consisting of parts with a limited freedom of motion in vertical direction relative to each other, to permit vertical movement of the corresponding axle relatively to the corresponding bow-shaped portion, and a guiding member for holding said axleholders in a substantially horizontal plane, said axle-holders being movably connected to said guiding member so as to be individually rotatable relatively thereto.
