'lhe machine con'iprises an elongated base or hed l() supported upon relatively short legs so that the operating1 mechanism mounted on the bed shall be positioned relative ly low ior convenience in inserting)` and removing` the Work to and from the machine and in attending to the operation thereof. At opposite ends of the bed are mounted in opposed relation tivo heads generally desig'# nated l1 and l1. Each comprises a horizontal or stationary section l2 and a normally upright section 13 in the .torni ot a ro-.filter arm or lever pivoted to swing on a horizontal anis relative to the horizontal section l2. The latter in each instance rotatably supports the lower one of two corrugating rolls lll and l5, and the lever arm rotatably supports the upper one of said rolls. Each of the heads moreover embodies cam 16 mounted in theloiver or horizontal section and arranged to operate upon thealever arm to .move the forming roll carried thereby in'tooperative engagement r-.f'ith the Work which positioned upon thev lower roll lll?. The' arrangement is such thatl the lever arms i3 ofv the heads are swung' in the operation of their 'respective' cams' 16 fromV the position.. indicated Fig. 6to that shown lll) upper rolls are in the position shown in 6 they clear the opposite ends of the cylinder to be operated upon, as the latter is rolled into position upon the lower rolls.
Referring now to Fig. 3, the bed 10 comprises opposite side members or rails 17 connected together by end pieces 18 and 19 and an intermediate cross piece 20. Extending longitudinally of the bed and mounted in the end piece 18 and the cross piece 2O is a shaft 21, suitable bearings 22 and 23 being provided for this purpose. Said shaft extends a substantial distance to the right of the bearing 23 and has a spur gear 24 splined thereon, between a pair of opposed bearing members 25 depending from the lower section of the head 11. Said gear 24- is arranged to mesh with a similar gear 26 to drive the lower forming roll of this head. The shaft 21 also carries a gear 27, located between the bearings 22 and 23 and adjacent a depending bearing member 25a. Said gear is arranged to mesh with a similar gear 28 for driving the lower roll of the other head 11.
The shaft 21 is constantly driven from a drive shaft 29 (Fig. 3) suitably mounted in bearings 30 and 31 upon the rear rail 17 of the bed and extending parallel to the shaft 21. The lconnection between .the two shafts consists of a spur gear 32 on the left hand end of the shaft 21 meshing with a pinion 33 on lthe shaft 29; and the latter shaft is arranged to be connected with a suitable source of power indicated in the present instance by a pulley 34. A clutch 35 (Fig. 1) is interposed between said pulley and the shaft 29 which clutch is arranged to be actuated by means of a lever 36 which is pivoted between its ends on a bracket 37 and connected by means of a link 38 with a bell-crank lever 40 mounted at the left hand end of the base on a shaft 41. One arm of said lever constitutes a treadle 42 whereby the clutch may be operated by the foot of the operator.
leferring now to Figs. 4 and 5, the head 11 is mounted upon the upper side of the base 10 at the left hand end thereof so as to be capable of longitudinal adjustment for facilitating the assembling operation. Thus the lower horizontal section 12 of the head comprises a plate 43, the opposite edges of which interengage with the upper edges of the side rails of the frame in a well known manner. Rising from the inner end of said plate, in spaced longitudinal relation, are a pair of bearing brackets 44 and 45 in which is journaled a stud shaft 46 having keyed thereon the lower forming roll 14. Said shaft 46 extends outwardly beyond the bracket 44 andhas rigid therewith the spur gear 28, the lower portion of which protrudes into a slot 47 in the plate 43 for engagement with the spur gear 27 on the shaft From the opposite side edges of the plate 43 rise upright members 49 which are cut away to receive bearing blocks 50 which with said members 49, provide journal bearings in which are mounted trunnions 51 formed integral with the lower end of the lever arm 13 and projecting from its forward and rear edges. Said lever arm is bifurcated at its lower end so as to form a recess 52 for receivingthe spur gear 28. At its upper end the lever arm is constructed to provide a flat support upon which is adj ustably mounted a U-shaped frame 53 in the opposite sides of which are journaled the opposite ends of a shaft 54 carrying the upper forming roll The rolls 14 and 15 are herein rigidly secured upon their shaft-s 46 and 54, and the construction is such that the ends of the shafts are capable of a limited longitudinal movement in their bearings so as to permit the two sets of rolls at opposite ends of the drum to move toward each other during the formation of the corrugations. The reason for such movement of the rolls is that the drum becomes shorter as the corrugations are formed and more especially when they are formed outwardly or upon the exterior of the drum. The direction of this movement is toward the right (Fig. 1), and to restore the rolls to their initial positions at the completion of the forming operation, 1 provide in the present instance a leaf spring 55 for each shaft, bearing against the inner ends thereof. The frame 53 may be mounted for adjustment on the upper end of the lever arm 13 in any suitable way. Herein the frame secured at opposite side edges of the arm (Fig. 7) by means of a pair of plates y the opposite ends of a pin 60. Carried be- ,i tween the members 59 is a roller 61 located '4" substantially midway between the upper and lower ends of the arm. This roller is normally held in engagement with the cam 16 by means of a weight 62 connected with the arm by a cable 63 passing over an idler 63d on the cam shaft. The arrangement is such that when the arm is drawn back into its inclined position (Fig. 6) the weight G2 rests upon the floor beneath the bed. vents any jarring or shock such as might be caused were a spring employed.

I claim as my invention:

3. A machine of the character described comprising,` a base, a` head mounted on the basay a forming roll mounted to turn on a horizontal axis in the head, a lever mounted for swinging' movement in the head and having' a second forming roll mounted thereon, said lever being swingable to carry said movable roll from a position beyond one end -ot the stationary roll into a position directly thereover and vice versa, and means including a cam for swinging said lever.

A, machine ot the character described having a forming' roll mounted to turn on a fixed horizontal axis, a lever arm mounted to swing' on a horizontal axis extending in a direction perpendicular to the axis ot said forming roll, a second forming,- roll mounted to turn on said lever into a position parallel to the axis of the iirst roll, and means for actuating` said lever comprising a cam operating,` to swing said lever at a relatively high rate of speed from its normal inoperative position to a position such that the movable roll approaches the other roll and then at a slow or working speed to per'lorm the forming: operation.
5. A machine of the character described having` a pair oi heads mounted in spaced relation and each having a forming roll mounted therein on a fixed horizontal axis, means on opposite sides of each of said forming' rolls to retain a cylinder in position upon said forming rolls, a second pair of `forming` rolls mounted tor swinging movement rom a position clear of the ends ot the cylinder placed on the .tirst mentioned rolls into positions in the opposite ends ot the cylinder and over said first mentioned rolls, and means operating` to move said movable rolls into the ends oft the cylinder lirst at a high rate o1 speed through the major portion of the movement and then at a low or working speed to produce the forming operation.
G. A machine of the character described having a pair of forming rolls mounted for relative swingingy movement from a normal position in which the axes of the rolls are approximately at right angles to each other to an operative position in which the axes of the rolls are approximately parallel, and means 'for eliecting' such relative swinging movement adapted initially to operate at a. relatively high speed while the rolls move toward their operative relation and then at a lowspeed during the forming operation.

A. machine or the character described having a pair ot 'forming rolls mounted tor relative swinging movement trom a normal position in which the axes ot the rolls are approximately at right angles to each other to an operative position in which the axes of the rolls are approximately parallel, and means tor effecting such relative swinging movement adapted initially to operate at relatively high speed while the rolls move toward their operative relation, then at a low speed during the forming` operation, and finally to eiiect the return of the rolls to their normal inoperative position at a high speed.

A machine ot the character described having two forming rolls mounted for relative swinging` movement, means tendingto restrain such relative swinging movement, and a cam for effecting such movement at a high speed during the major portion ot the movement from a normally inoperative position toward a working position, then at a low speed during the forming operation, and finally to permit a reverse movement between the rolls at a high speed by said restraining means.
9. A machine of the character described comprising a forming roll, means rotatably supporting said roll on a lixed axis, a lever arm mounted on said supporting means for swinging movement from an inclined position to an upright position and vice versa, a second forming roll carried by said lever arm, and cam means for operating said lever arm to carry the second roll into op erative association with the lirst roll, said cam means being adapted to swing said lever arm from its inclined position to an upright position at a high rate of speed and then to continue the movement ot the arm at a slow speed to accomplish the forming operation.
l0. A machine of the class described having a support, a forming roll mounted on said support to turn on a longitudinal axis, a lever arm mounted to turn on a transverse horizontal axis located at one end of said forming` roll, said lever arm having a second forming roll thereon and being` movable from an inclined position to an upright position to carry said roll from an inoperative position into operative relation with the first mentioned roll, and means for swinging said lever arm comprising a cam mounted on a transverse axis spaced from vthe axis ot the arm in a direction away from the forming rolls and adapted operatively to engage with said arm to move it first at a hifrh speed from its said inclined position to its upright position and then at a low speed to accomplish the 'forming operation the axes of the rolls in the upright position of the lever arm being substantially parallel.
l1. A machine of the class described having a support, a forming roll mounted on said support to turn on a longitudinal axis, a lever arm mounted to turn on a transverse horizontal axis located at one end of said forming roll, said lever arm having a second forming roll thereon and being movable from an inclined position to an upright position to carry its roll from an inoperative position into operative relation with the first mentioned roll, means for swinging said roll comprising a cam mounted on a transverse axis spaced from the axis of the arm in a direction away trom the forming rolls and adapted operatively to engage with said arm to move it first ata high speed from its said inclined position to its upright position and then at a low speed to accomplish the forming operation, the axis of the rolls in the upright position of the arm being substantially parallel, and a weight operating to return the arm to its 'inclined position after the completion of the forming operation.
12. A machine of the character described comprising a pair of forming rolls one of which is mounted to rotate on a fixed axis and the other of which is mounted to swing from a position in which its axis is substantially parallel to the axis of the other roll into a position approximately at right angles to said axis of the other roll and vice versa, and means tor swinging the movable roll from the last mentioned position into such parallel relation to the stationary roll coniprising a cam operating to move the movable roll initially and during a major portion of its movement at a high rate of speed and finally at a low or `working speed.
13. A machine of the character described having a forming roll mounted to turn on a stationary axis and a second forming roll mounted to turn on a swinging axis, a cam mounted on an axis extending 'transversely to the axis of the rollsandspaced a substantial distance from one end of the stationary roll, and means forswingably supporting the movable roll comprising a lever tulcrumed on a transverse axis located between t-he stationary roll and the axis of said cam and a roller on said lever adapted to be engaged by said cam, the arrangement being such that when the highest point on the cam engages the roller the two forming rolls are disposed in approximately parallel relation.

A machine of the character described havingafhead comprising a relatively hat support .with upright members at opposite side edges thereof, a forming roll mounted on an axis extending longitudinally of the support near one end thereof, a lever journal'ed n'said'uprightmembers on the support andjhavinga movable forming roll mounted thereon, and 'a cam having a' `shaft also mounted in said upright members, said cam beingadapted operatively to engage said lever to move the forming roll thereon into engagement with the roll on said support.

A machine of the character described having a head comprising a relatively flat support with uprightmembers at opposite side edges thereof, a forming roll mounted on'an axis extending longitudinally ott the support near yone end 'thereofi`,'a lever journaled on said support and having a vmovable forming roll mountedV thereon and a c amhavingfa shaft-.mounted in said upright Side members, said `cam being adapted operatively to engage said lever to move the forming roll thereon into engagement with the roll on said support, said shaft being mounted for adjustment toward and trom the axis of said arm.

A machine ofthe character described i having a pair of forming rolls mounted for relative swinging movement, one of said rolls having a supporting member mounted for swinging movement on a fixed axis extending transversely of the axis of the forming roll carried thereby and having` a rollsupporting member ymounted for adjustment longitudinally ott the member whereby to vary the vdistance between the rolls when in parallel relation. `.18. In a machine off the character described, the combination of a forming roll mounted to turn Aon a fixed axis, a movable roll, a vsupport for the movable roll adapted to carry it into and out of parallel relation to the stationary roll, power-driven means for actuating said support through a fixed arc of movement, and means for adjusting the movable roll on its support to vary the distance between the rolls when in parallel relation.
19. A machine of the character described comprising asupport having a forming roll mountedto turn' on a fixed axis, a second hirgming` roll mounted for movement toward and tromgthe first forming roll, said second forming roll having a support in which it is journaled vso as torbe capable of limited longitudinal movement tl'rerein.y and means yieldably restraining such longitudinal movement of the movable roll.
20. A machine of the character described comprising` an elongated bed, a head at each end ot the bed, means carried by adjacent ends ot the two heads for rotatably supporting a cylinder in position thereon, a Storming,` roll mounted in each head adapted to contact with the under side of the cylinder vlien thus supported, each ot said heads having a second forming roll mounted for swinging movement into and out of the ends ot the cylinder, and means carried by the respective heads for swinging` the movable rolls.

A machine of the character described comprising,` an elongated bed, a head at each endof the bed, means carried by adjacent ends ot the two heads for rotatably supporting a cylinder in position thereon including a forming roll mounted in each head and adapted to contact with the under side of the cylinder, each of said heads having a second forming roll mounted for swinging movement into and out of the ends of the cylinder, means carried by the respective heads tor swinging the movable rolls, and a drive mechanism mounted in the bed and operatively connected With the stationary rolls of each head to rotate them.
