Description
A.- 0. LANGWORTHY.
Bed-Bottom.
No; 213,115. Patented Mar. 11,1879.
H. PETERS. PH-"ITLLUTHOGRAPMER. WASmNeTQN, D C- UNITED STATES PATENT Demon,
ALBERT C. LANGWORTHY, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 213,l15, dated March 11, 1879; application filed October 5, 1875.
To all whom it may concern! Be it known that I, ALBERT 0. LANG- WORTHY, of Aurora, county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of spring-slats for bed-bottoms,and in the manner of supporting the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the slats. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, with means for supporting the same.
I take a slat of suitable thickness and split it from one end, leaving it solid at the other end, thus forming, as it were, two slats, A and B, except at one end, where it is only one. The upper slat, A, is made thinner than the lower slat, B. The thus split slat is opened, and between the two parts are placed any suitable number of springs, O G.
Across the bedstead are placed two or more bearings, D D, on which a sufficient number of slats, AB, are laid to form the bed-bottom, these slats being held in their respective places by means of dowel-pins a, secured in the bearin gs D and extending up into holes in the slats.
The slats can, therefore, easily be removed at any time and packed in a bundle for moving, or when cleaning, making a portable adjustable bed-bottom susceptible of being adjusted to any sized bed.
If desired, the slats may be permanently fastened to the bearings.
Instead of splitting one slat to make two, I may take two slats and permanently unite them at one end by rivets or other suitable means, which will answer the same purpose.
It is, of course, understood that the solid ends of the slats shall be at the foot of the bed, to make the same lower than the head.
I am aware that a slotted bed-bottom slat, in combination with springs arranged between the upper and lower portion thereof, is not new; and I do not broadly claim such as my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 2d day of October, 1875.
ALBERT G. LANGWORTHY.
