vThe present improvements relate to a smoking stand which comprises a base from which extends a vertical support for arefuse receiver below which is a container wherein refuse may collect, the container being demountable for purpose of emptying. 'In particular, the present inventionis directed to the mounting of such a refuse receiver, andl to its assembly and relationship with the remaining units of the smoking stand wherein it. serves in an ornamental capacity. A'suggestive. embodiment of this invention is set forth in the accompanying drawing, wherein;-.

Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a smoking stand in its entirety having a central refuse container giving the appearance of a supporting column;

Fig. 2, which is a similar view, shows the smoking stand with the container removed;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in vertical section through the refuse receiver and upper portion of the container therebelow;

Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail in vertical section through the lower portion of the container, a portion of the base, and one of the supporting posts; and

Fig. 5, which is a view similar to Fig. 3, shows a modified construction in which a tray is removably applied to the refuse receiver.

As shown, the present smoking stand comprises a base B from which rises a plurality of posts P supporting a tray T having a central opening with a depending flange 6 wherein is tted a refuse receiver R. The receiver may comprise a bowl 1 over which is removably fitted a cap 8 having a central depending cone 9 which extends part way into the bowl. A swinging closure IIJ may betted over the cone opening. The bowl may be secured as by spot welds to the tray 40 flange.

The walls of the bowl in its lower region terminate in a depending neck Il Adeiining an opening which communicates with a container C formed at its upper end with an offset ange 45 l2 which fits over and engages the bowl neck (see Fig. 3). The container, as shown, is in the form of a cylinder having a bottom l5 which may conveniently be formed by insertion of an inverted cup I 6 held in place as by spot welds.

50 The container which has the appearance of a central column is rested upon a circular plate l'l having an annular bead I8 which defines a seat for the lower end of the container. This plate may be universally movably supported upon a bolt I9 which is extended upwardly through the base B and through a weighting-plate 20, if needed. A lock nut 2|, which is screwed down against the upper side of the base, maintains the bolt xedly in a vertical position, and surrounding the bolt is a coiled compression spring 22 5- which exerts an upward thrust against the seat plate whereby the container is suspended resiliently on of the base at an appreciable elevation. A cap nut 23 ailixed to the upper end of the bolt serves as a stop to prevent disassembly of the seat plate from the bolt when the container is removed therefrom.

In the construction of Figs. l to 4, I have shown two supporting posts arranged diametrically with respect to the bolt I9 which occupies an axial position upon the base. Support of the tray upon the posts may be conveniently provided by reducing the upper end of each post to form a threaded stud 25 which passes through the tray to enter a threaded socket 26 in the lower end of a U-shaped handle H which forms a lifting bail for the smoking stand. With the posts rotated to advance the studs within the threaded sockets of the bail, the tray is securely and immovably supported. The lower end of each post which rests upon the base may be secured thereto as by a bolt 2l which passes through the base from its under side (and through a weighting-plate 20, if used) to enter a threaded socket 28 in the lower end of the post.

In use, the container will occupy an axial position upon the stand, and symmetrically between the two supporting posts. When tted into place, its lower end is rested upon the seat plate Il which, in response to a downward pressure, is depressed sufliciently to lower the upper end of the container just below the bowl neck over which it may then be iitted when the container moves upwardly again in response to tension of the spring. With the deposit of refuse, ashes, etc., in the refuse receiver, all such material drops downwardly through the bowl and into the container whose capacity may be relatively large. 'Ihe closure prevents escape of odors from this collected refuse, so that there is no necessity for frequent emptying of the container. On such occasions a downward movement of the container will force the s eat plate toward the base against the tension of the spring, permitting the upper end of the container to disengage from the refuse receiver for a lateral movement as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, whereupon the container may be lifted 01T and taken away from the smoking stand for emptying of its contents.

A somewhat similar construction is indicated each such operation. Upon the upper end of each post P rests a shelf 3D which is extended laterally from the bowl 'l of the refuse receiver R, a bolt 3| being passed through the shelf to .engage Within a threaded socket at the upper' end of the post whereby the bowl of theV refuse receiver is xedly mounted in place.

The cap 8 which is fitted over thev bowl is desirably. formed with a peripheral wall 32 having an outward slant and terminating in an oiset ange 33 which fits 'over an uptulrned flange 34 around the periphery of the bowl. The cap is thus seated in place, either permanently or otherwise. The cap is formed with an upper peripheral bead adjacent which is an inturned flange 35 defining a large central opening into which depends a cone 36 whose lower end is fitted with an appropriate swinging closure 3T.

In a smoking stand, the combination of a base, a refuse receiver, a support for the receiver extending upwardly from the base, a seat plate, resilient means yieldingly supporting the seat plate for universal movement above the base, and a columnar container extending downwardly from the receiver and communicating therewith andhaving its lower end of less diameter than the seat plate and of a size for removable fitting thereuponLand interengaging means on the container and receiver for normally preventing lateral displacement` of one with respect to the other, said last named means being disengageable when the container is moved downwardly against the resistance of the resilient Vmeansy supporting the seat plate.
