IMPROVEMENT IN PACKAGES OF COTTON BATTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,046, dated March 11, 1879; application filed December 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that], GEORGE M. HAMLIN, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packages of Cotton Batting. of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in the mode of packing cotton batting for shipment. Heretofore the rolls of cotton batting have been packed in wooden boxes or cases, which is comparatively expensive, owing to the cost of the boxes or cases and the greater cost of freight on account of the increase in weight caused by the boxes or cases.
The object of my invention is to produce a package of cotton batting which shall be compact, light, strong, and cheap 5 and my invention consists, principally, of a package of cotton batting composed of a number of rolls of batting compressed in their longitudinal direction between two rigid heads or plates, held together by a suitable covering or envelope, or other equivalent means, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved package of cotton batting. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof with a portion of the covering re-' moved: Fig. 3 is a plan view with a portion of the covering removed from the wire ring.

A A represent a number of rolls of cotton batting, cylindrical in form and wrapped in tissue-paper, in the usual manner, and arranged in two tiers, as clearly shown. They are compressed in the direction of their axis, or longitudinally, in a suitable press, and then tightly clamped between two or more rigid circular heads or plates, 13 B B constructed of wood, pasteboard, or any other suitable material.
c is a cord or .tie passed centrally through the heads B B B for tightly holding them against the rolls of cotton batting. d is a covering or envelope of paper or other suitable material, surrounding or inclosing the sides of the package, and secured to the heads B B by means of a wire ring, c,'arranged on each of the heads B B The rings c are made somewhat smaller in diameter than the heads B B and the paper or other covering d is passed over the rings, and between the ring and the respective head, whereby the covering and the rings are securely held in place.
If preferred,'the rings c may be dispensed with and the paper covering may be secured directly to the heads B B by pasting, or in any other suitable manner.
1f preferred, the central tie, 0, may be dispensed with, and the heads be held against the rolls of batting by the outer covering, d, alone.
\Vhen the rings 0 are used, the heads are readily applied and removed by springing the rings 6 over the heads.
Any desired number of tiers of rolls of batting may be so arranged successively between a corresponding number of heads in the same package.
Upon loosening the central tie, c, or otherwise releasing the heads, the rolls of batting are readily taken from the package, when they again assume their original shape, owing to the elasticity of the material.
. My improved package confines the cotton batting in the smallest possible space without injury to the goods, is very light, and therefore easily handled and cheaply transported, and, owing to its compactness and cylindrical form, is very strong and can be produced at very small expense, thereby materially reducing the cost of shipping the goods.
I claim as my invention- 1. A package of cotton batting composed of one or more tiers of rolls of batting compressed in their longitudinal direction, and clamped between two or more rigid heads, B B substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A package of cotton batting composed of one or more tiers of rolls of batting clamped between two or more rigid heads, B B", secured together by an outer covering, (1, and rings 6 c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A package of cotton batting composed of one or more tiers of rolls of batting clamped between two or more rigid heads, B B secured together by an outer covering, (1, rings 66, and central tie, c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
