IMPROVEMENT IN lRONlNG-TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,805, dated March 4, 1879; application filed January 6, 1879.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. KIL- BOURNE, of Bethel, in the county of Oxford and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Ironing-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure "1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an under plan view of the same, showing the legs or supports folded down upon the table.

This invention has relation to that class of tables used for ironing clothes, such as shirtbosoms, pantaloons, skirts, dresses, and other wearing-apparel; and the object thereof is to construct such a laundry implement as will render it readily adjustable to any height to accommodate the user; also, in so constructing the legs or supports as will allow of them being folded down upon the table when the same is not required for use, the general construction of the several parts constituting the device or implement being hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the table, of rectangular form, and of wood or other suitable material. Hinged to one end of the table A are legs a, held the required distance apart by cross-braces b and cleat 0. To the inner side of the legs a, near the upper ends thereof, are pivoted short legs d, held apart by cleat e. The upper ends of the legs 61 project beyond their pivotal point, and have upon their inner side guide-pins], disposed at right angles to the legs, and engage with guides g, secured to the under side of the table. This construction prevents the short legs from becoming displaced or strained laterally by any side pressure on the table; and, the legs being secured so as to support the table at one end, the opposite end of the table is free from anything in the way of placin g over the table a dress, skirt, or other similar article of wearing-apparel for the purpose of ironing. It will be further noticed that the construction and manner of connecting the legs to the table admit of their being readily folded down upon the under side thereof. A latch, h, formed with suitable notches i, which engage with a catch, j, upon a cross-piece, k, secured to the short legs, holds the legs a (Z the required distance apart, and thereby regulates the height of the table. The notches i, as will be noticed, are inclined in such a manner as to hold firmly on the catch j, and the rear end of the latch is forked or bifurcated, the ends thereof being pivoted to the inner side of the legs a.

To the under side of the table A is a sliding board, B, held thereto by the band-loop l and guide-plates m. To the sides of the board B, and at the rear end thereof, are pins n, which limit the sliding movement of the board when drawn out said pins striking against the plates at and preventing the board from being withdrawn; A stop, 0, prevents the board from being pushed too far under the table when not required for use; but when required for the purpose of pressing sleeves of any small article it can readily be drawn out the vrequired distance.

I am aware of ironing-tables having legs connected thereto and capable of being folded down against the under side of the table, and provided with means for holding the legs at difi'erent. positions, so, as to regulate the height of thetable, and I do not therefore wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, the above construction but,

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
