UNITED STATES PATENT FIGE.
LOUIS H. GANO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-ROLLER BRACKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,548, dated February 25, 1879 application filed October 10, 1878; patented in England, September 4,1876.
1876, No. 3,47 7 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains.
to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a shade-fixture, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, A represents a windowshade, attached to an ordinary shaderoller, B, having a pulley or sheave wheel, 0, on one end, with journal a projecting therefrom, and a friction thimble or ring, D, provided with a flange, E, on the other end.
In place of the usual open bracket commonly employed to support the ends of the shade-roller, I use a hood-bracket, F F, consisting of a circular casing, with an ear or stem, S, at the bottom for fastening to the window-casing, said hood-bracket inclosing the sheave-wheel O at one end and the thimble D at the other end. i
In the center of one of the brackets is a hole, into which the journal of the sheavewheel is inserted, while the thimble D, at the other end, forms the journal, and is inserted into the bracket, which is provided with a packing of ,leather, indiamubber, or other suitable material, G, placed within the circular casing of the bracket.
On one side, beneath the packing I use a flat spring, H, resting on the inner sideofthe casing and pressing against the leather-packing which encircles the thimble I); and, the friction caused by the packing Gr coming in contact with the surface of the thimble, the shade and roller are held in any desired position, and the shade is prevented from dropping by its own weight, the. amount of friction necessary being regulated by the strength of the spring H.
I is a socket, secured to the window-casing, into which the ear or stem of the bracket is inserted, affording an easy method of putting the shade up or taking it down at pleasure.
J represents the cord for rolling up the shade, which passes through an eyelet-hole in the casing of the bracket and is secured to the pulley or sheave wheel 0.
The hood-bracket F protects the pulley and cord from injury by contact, dust, 850., and it serves as a guide for the cord, confining it in its proper channel, and also guides the shade, and prevents it from riding or running on the flanges at the end of the roller, and makes a perfect finish to the fixture.
On the cord J, at a suitable point, is attached a stop, K, which, coming in contact with the hood-bracket, prevents the shade being unrolled so far as to tear it from its fast enings to the roller, and prevents exposing the naked roller to view.
In the drawings, it will be observed I have left off a section of each bracket, to more clearly show the relative position of the attachments on the ends of the roller.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 in the drawings represent detached parts, Fig. 2 representing one of the brackets F, with the packing G and spring H in proper position. Fig. 3 represents the reverse side of the bracket I.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the thimble D, attached to one end of the shade-roller B, and forming the journal for the same, the circular casing or hood-bracket F, the packing Gr, and flat spring H, arranged within the circular casin g, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of January, 1876.
LOUIS H. GANO. [L. 8.]
In presence of- N. M. PHILLIPS, ANGELO P. PHILLIPS.
