Description

VUNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
sIMON vEEELAND, OE SALAMANCA, NEW YORK.
IMPRVEMENT lN CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Specication formingpart of Letters Patent No. 172,211, dated January 11, 1876; application led October 4, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, SIMON VREELAND, of Salamanca, Gattaraugus county, New York, have invented an Improved Shade-Fixture, of which the following is a specilication:
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and eflicient window-shade lixture of A represents the shade-roller, to one end ot'V which is secured, in any suitable manner, a
i metal ring, x, having two lianges, a and b, the
forlnerotl which is straight, or nearly so, and the latter bent outward to the concavO-convex form shown. Against the concave face ot' the flange b bears the convex face oil the disk d, which has lon the opposite side acentral tubular projection, e, ot' a square or other equivalent shape, adapted to an Opening of corresponding form in a bracket, B, so that it is prevented from turning. The Opposite 'end Ot' the roller has a plain spindle, c, adapted to a slot in a bracket, D, which thus forms the bearing for one end of the roller, the bearing for the opposite end of the roller being the disk d, adapted to the flange b oi' the ring x. rI he pressure of this disk against the llange, and consequently the ease with which the shade can be operated, is regulated Aby means of a screw, f, and spring g, contained within the hollow projection e of the disk d, against which the spring bears at one end, and at the other against the head of the screw j', the end of which projects into the end of the wooden roller A, so that by adjusting this screw the pressure of the spring can be varied at pleasure, in order to regulate the degree of friction between the Bange b and disk d to suit shades of dilI'erent weights. In the groove between the flanges a. and b ot' the ring m is wound the operating-cord z', which I prefer to attach at one end to the ring, and allow the other end, after rst passing it through a guiding-eye, m, on the disk d, to hang loosely, so that by pulling upon it the cord will be unwound and the shade raised, the latter being lowered `by pulling directly upon its lower end. If desired, however, an endless cord, wound Once or twice around the ring x, and unconned at its lower end, may be used. The brackets B and D are attached by screws p to the top bar ot' the upper sash, the brackets being slotted so that they may be adjusted toward or from each other to suit rollers of different lengths..
Owing to the fact that the brackets are attached to the upper sash and move with the same, the obstruction Ot' the passage of air by the shade when the window is down is effectually prevented.
It' desired, the flanged ringx and disk d may be applied to both ends ot' the roller, in stead of to one end only, as described.
I claim as my invention- 1. A curtain-hxture in which the roller A, provided with a flanged ring, an, is combined with a non-rotating spring-disk,d, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the roller A and its flanged ring x with the disk d, its tubular projection e, screw f, and Springg, said projection e being so adapted to an opening in the bracket that the disk is prevented from turning, all as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my" name to this specitication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SIMON VR-EELAND. Witnesses:
ELWOOD T. DEETZ, HARRY SMITH.
