which are primarily adapted for location between the covers of a book folder and the like.
4In the present invention this display figure, image or design is employed with a paper match book or folder wherein the image or design is so mounted on the back of the book or folder that when the cover is swung to open position, the image or gure will automatically assume an erect or vertical position with respect to the back and cover.
The invention consists of certain novel features of structure and combination of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims and the accompanying drawing.
Fig. i is a view in side elevation showing the book or folder in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan with one of the covers swung to open position;
Fig. 3 is a view in cross section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and p Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view in perspective of a slightly modified form.
The book or folder consists of two covers I0 and Ii made from a single strip of paper which are joined by a back I2 at their inner ends. The covers Ii! and ii are folded along the i dges of the back i2, so that the two covers are disposed in parallel relation, or the paper strip may be scored as at i3 for forming the folding edge between the covers and the back I2. Mounted. upon the cover I I) are rows of paper matches I4 provided with igniting heads I5. These matches Il are held upon the cover i0 by having the'outer free end of this cover folded over upon the matches as at I8 and a staple II passes through the cover I8, matches i4 and folded portion I6 for securing the matches to the cover.
Mounted upon the back I2, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is a strip I8 bearing a figure or image which in this instance represents a bottle. This figure or image is preferably made of paper and is provided with a base or flange I9. This base or flange is made integral with the strip or figure I8 and is attached to the back I2 by means of the staple 20, although it may be secured to the back by means of an adhesive such as glue. When the folder or match book is in closed position as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the strip or figure I8 overlies the matches I4, as the figure is positioned adjacent to the folding edge of the cover II, the back I2 being of sufficient width to permit the matches to be freely disposed between the two covers. The figure or strip I 8 is of less height than the cover II, so that it does not inl anywise interfere with the cover being brought to a position to overlie the matches and engaged by the overturned edge or portion i6 of the cover I0 for securing the two covers together 5 and confining the gure or strip I8 therebetween.
As the cover II is released from the cover III and thrown to open position for the removal of a match, the strip or gure I8 will be brought to a vertical or perpendicular position, as clearly 10 indicated in the several figures. 'Ihis is caused by the back portion I2 assuming a position somewhat in conformity to the plane assumed by the cover III as the cover II is moved to a position away from the cover I0. It will, therefore, be l5 apparent that the strip I8 will always maintain a position substantially at right angles to the back I2 regardless of the position of the covers with respect to each other. The manner of attaching the back I2 to the covers I8 and II is 20 optional; that is, the blank or sheet from which the covers and back are formed may not be scored at I3, but simply creased or folded as the cover i0 is brought to closed position for conning the matches and strip or image therebe- 25 In the modication shown in Fig. 4 the figure or strip I8 is struck up from the cover i0 and a portion of the back I2, so that the back I2 forms the wall support for the strip or figure as is illus- 30 trated in the other gures. "The figure or strip as supported in this manner, as illustrated in Fig. 4, Will function in the same manner as the image or figure attached to the back I2 as in the other figures.
It will be obvious that in releasing the cover I I from the cover II) that it is necessary to move this cover II sufficiently to cause the back I2 to move away from the heads of the matches before the gure will be moved to a vertical or perpen- 40 dicular position, and as the strip I8 is positioned adjacent the folding edge of the cover II, it will overlie the matches carried by the cover I0 as the cover I I is brought into engagement with the portion I6 for securing the free ends of the cover to- 45 gether in closing the match book.
I claim:
1. A book comprising a body ofl flexible material, said body being folded to provide two cover sections and a back portion with the cover sections `arranged in superposed relation and with the back arranged at substantially right angles to the cover sections, and a strip bearing a figure or image struck from one of said cover sections and said back and supported by said back, said 55 2 enzyme strip forming n part o! a. cover section and back when the cover sections are in superpssed rela.- tion end assuming an upright position with respectto said back and separated from a cover section when the cover section is moved to open posiun.
2. A book comprising a. body of exible mate= rial. said body being folded to provide ytwo cover sections and e back pcrtion, with the cover ses- JOHN BOYER:
