This invention relates to cotv structures and the like, and includes among its important objects the provision of a cot which may' be folded up when not in use, and which may be otherwisefolded so as to provide a table support. I g Another important object is the provision'lof 'an innerspring structure which is simple andrugged and which affords increased comfort to the :user. A further object is a cot structure comprising a central frame section having depth, and-having short end sections hinged thereto at each ofits ends, together with especial hinge devices adapted to hold the end sections in raised position 'to receive and support a table member. Y 1 Yet another object is theprovision'of a device of the class characterized above, in whichthe central. frame section has a fabric bottom" upon: which is disposed a spring assembly; which in turn is covered by a fabric top, while afabric cradle or full-length cover is laid over the entire upper cot frame, thus providing reinforced load support and a novel housing for-the springs.
Other objects and novel aspects of the invention will appear as the following description develops in view of the drawings, in which; Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the cot structure folded condition;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation erected; a 1
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of theerected cotwith of the cot'unfoldedfior a portion of the cover fabric foldedback; '1
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical :sec-L tion viewed along line 44 of' Fig. 3};
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary verticaL'section through the frame and springs and is taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 3; i I
Fig. 6 is an enlarged elevational detail of anend hinge and is taken along line 66 of Fig. 5;
Fig. '7 is a front elevation, partly in section', of the hinge of Fig. 6 and is viewed in the latter along line 1-1; while Fig. 8 is a vertical median section of the erected cot arranged as a table. i
A preferred form of the invention includes a frame II] of elongated rectangular form and' comprised, as seen in Fig. 3, of a pair of lateral franrie rails II and a pair of longitudinal-frame rails l2, all of oblong and preferably rectangular-crosssection, arranged end to-end with their lateral or side edge portions l3 of each rail disposed in parallel planes (Fig. 5), thus giving a maximum of depth to the frame, for reasons which will hereinafter appear.
Each of the longitudinal side rails l2 has a movable section I2 attached to the ends thereof (c1; s s 1 v by means of special end hinges [4. These hinges are in the form of a pair of triangularly shaped plates l4 having a plurality of mounting holes l5 (Fig. 6) adjacent the severalcorners thereof, and
eachhaving a pair of apertured ears 6 adjacent B overlying relation, there being a pintle or rivet l'l extended through one pair of ears on opposite plates, and in this way, the section I 2 may be pivoted relative to the section I2 from the folded condition seen in Fig. lto the extended condition seen in Fig. 2, there being, of course, a pair of hinges I4 at each end of the intermediate rails 12.
Referring again to Figs. 6 and 7, it will be observed that one of the hinge plates I4 is provided with a holding rod or arm I8 having one end portion bent into a lateral stud l9 pivotally seated in the opening of one of the ears It by having its free end peened or flattened therein. The opposite end of the holding rod I8 is bent to form a lateral projection 20 which is receivable in the opening of the ear I6 of the opposite plate when the sections l2 are in the position seen in Figs. 6 and 8, in which the arms l8 firmly hold the'sections for the purpose of supporting a table section or top 20.
Each of the endwise or lateral frame members I I is provided with an edge strip 2| which extends laterally outward of the member from its narrow side, and when the end sections I!" are folded up into the position seen in Fig. 8, the top 20'may be securely lodged in the ledge formation provided by these opposite edge strips, while the several holding arms l8 on the hinges assure adequate support for any reasonable load applied to the table.
Suitable leg members 23 are pivotally connected to the main frame l2 as at.24, and desirably may be arranged in pairs with the legs of each pair be-- ing connected together by stop. rods- 25 attached to each leg at such a distance from they pivotal points 24' that when the legs are extended, as in Fig. 2 for example, these stop rods will bear firmly Thepairsof legs are also desirably t 3, 1937, to which attention is directed for further details.
A novel innerspring arrangement is also provided in the present invention in the form of a bottom fabric or canvas covering 28 having its marginal edge portions folded under and stapled to the bottom narrow edge portions of the central or main frame I2, as at 29 (Figs. 4 and 5) near each of its ends the central frame section l2 has a long thin strip 30 of fibre or metal of the same width as the frame rail and extended laterally across the frame for attachment to the central part of the same by any suitablemeans such as In this manner, the main longitudi' nal side rails l3, the end strip 30, and the fabric the nails 3|.
, is stapled as at onto the upperhorizontal edge portion of the central frame l2,-;thus closing off the entire spring assembly.
Over the protective sheet or cover 34 is then laid a full length cradle fabric 36 of canvas or the like, and this fabricis stapled down all along the top horizontal edge surface of the whole frame, including the main frame portion l2 and the two hinged end sections l2, as indicated at It will thus appear that when the load of an occupant is appliedto the cot in its fully extended condition (Fig. 2),, that this load will be distributed in part over the 'top cradle fabric 36, somewhat in the manner of the ordinary cot, and much of this part of the load will be divided between the middle and two. end sections. In addition, .an appreciable part-of the load will be transmitted to the protective cover sheet 34 in the central region of the cot Where the load is concentrated, =while still another considerable portion of the load is sustained by the spring assembly 32,'yieldingly supported on the bottom canvas or fabric 28.
Thus, the several objects of the invention are accomplished in a simple and economical fash ion, and theresulting cot structure, in addition to being rigid, very strong and durable, is .considerably more comfortable than-other forms of cot.
An additional feature ofthe invention'resides in the'arrangement of the hinges l4 and the position of the pintles l1 thereof a distance above the topvedge of the side rails l2such that when the movable end sections are folded back upon the main section in the manner shown in Fig. 1, a space indicated at 40 remains between the confronting edges of the folding end sections I2 and the top edges of the middle rails l2, which is adequate toreceive the tabletop member 20 and hold the same in place for transportation with the cot structure in its folded condition. I In the latter condition the board is prevented from sliding out of its seat in a' lateral direction by the protruding portions [6 of the hinge memterially from the spirit of the invention, and it is understood that the appended claims are to include all said modifications and changes and all equivalent expedients for accomplishing the structure disclosed.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A cot including a central frame section and end sections attached by means of hinges to opposite ends of said centralsection and adapted to fold back onto the latter, means co-operable with said hinges for holding said end sections in a substantially upright position relative to said central section, a removable table section adapted to-fit between said central section and said end sections when the latter are folded onto the former, and means on said end sections and .'co-operable with. the latter to receive and support said table section in position on the end sections in their aforesaid upright position.
2. A cot including a central frame section hav ing a folding leg structure and movable end sections attached by means of hinges at opposite endsiof said central section; means co-operable with said hinges to hold said end sections in a determined raised position to support a table section, a removable table section, and means on said .end sections to receive and retain said table section in place when said end sections are in raised position.
3..A cot including a main frame section and movable end sections at its opposite ends,'together with a flexible cradle member extended over and attached to said main and end sections, the latter being pivotally attached to the main se'ctionby means of hinges constructed to per mit-the folding of the end sections back onto the main section in spaced relation tothe latter,
such that a substantially planar table member may be held between'said main section and'said folded-back end section, means arranged with said hinges for holding the same in a predetermined' position to position said end sections in substantially upright relation'to said main section, a substantially planar table memberreceivable on the upper ends of said end sections in their raised position as aforesaid, means on said end sections preventing dislodgement of said table member, the latter member being received between said main section and said endsections when the latter are folded back in the manner aforesaid. l
4. A combination cot and table including a main frame section with movable opposite" end sections adapted tofold back onto the main section, hinge means connecting said endand main sectionsfor the purpose aforesaid, means forming part of said hinge means and adjustableto position said end'sections in substantially raised position relative to said main section, said hinge means being adapted to provide a space between said end and main sections When folded back as aforesaid, a removable table member adapted to fit into and be held in said space between the endand main sections, the outermost free lateral edge portions of said end, sections being pro:
vided with a flange forming a ledge into which said table member may befitted when'said end sectionsare in raised position to form a table.
