LADYS HANDBAG HOLDER Filed Oct. 12, 1956 INVEN'I'OR ATTOR N EYS Patented July 19, 1938 7 LADY S HANDBAG HOLDER Esther M. Buttschau, Vero Beach, Fla., assignor of one-fourth to S. K. Rowe, White City, Fla.
Application October 12, 1936, Serial No. 105,343
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a ladys hand bag holder and has for the primary object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be conveniently carried within a hand bag and when it is desired to be free of the hand bag, said device may be readily attached thereto and applied to a support, such' as a table, chair or the like, thus positioning the hand bag where it may be reached if needed with the person free of holding or supporting the hand bag.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a ladys hand bag holder constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same adapted to a support and to a hand bag.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation illustrating the holder.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the spring means for urging the jaws of the support engaging clamp into gripping position.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates a clamp designed especially for grip ping a table or like support and has connected thereto a flexible element 2 carrying a spring clip 3 which may be readily adapted to a ladys hand bag whereby the latter will be supported in a suspended position from the support. The clamp and clip may be of any artistic design and preferably of an extremely compact construction so that when the device is not in use it can be conveniently stored within the hand bag.
The clamp l consists of a relatively fixed jaw 4 and a movable jaw 5. The relatively fixed jaw 4 consists of angularly related portions, one of which is offset and enlarged, as shown at 6. The enlarged portion 6 is grooved to form a chamber 7 in which is pivotally mounted one end of the jaw 5. A spring 8 of the coil type operates in the chamber 1, one end of which is connected to 5 a shaft 9 formed on the pivoted end of the jaw 5 and the other end is connected to the enlargement 6. The spring acts to urge the jaw 5 into gripping position. A curved arm I0 is formed on the pivoted end of the jaw 5 and has the flexible l0 element 2 connected theretoI It is preferable to employ a swivel joint of any conventional construction for connecting the flexible element to the arm Ill. The curved arm l0 extends downwardly from the jaw 5 so that the weight of the hand bag connected to the clip 3 acts to aid the spring in urging the jaw 5 into gripping position.
If desired, the support engaging faces of the jaws 4 and 5 may be covered with a suitable protective material (not shown).
Having described the invention, I claim:
An article attaching device comprising a relatively fixed jaw including rightangularly disposed portions with one of said portions adapted to rest on a support and the other portion to depend from said support, an angularly disposed enlargement formed on the lower end of the said last-named portion and extending away from the support and having a chamber opening outwardly through the lower face and ends thereof, a movable jaw having one end located in the chamber and pivoted on said enlargement, an ear formed on the pivoted end of said movable jaw and located in the chamber, a coiled spring lying within the chamber and secured on the ear and on the enlargement and acting to urge the movable jaw against the under side of the support, and a depending extension formed on the pivoted end of the movable jaw and extending outwardly of the chamber to have an article secured thereto.
