This invention relates to garment holders, and more particularly pertains to the type of holders which are used at the end of an elastic strap or similar support for attachment to the top of hose or stockings for the purpose of holding them in place, such as is set forth in Reissue Patent No. 19,930, issued to James G. Tompkins April 14, 1936, and which type of supporter is characterized by the embodiment of a hose engaging yoke having an open and a closed end and pivoted at its open end for swinging movement around the pivotal axis to effect wrapping of a portion of the hose or stocking around the closed end thereof.
Among the salient objects of my invention are: to provide a supporting device. which can be very economically made and which will have means as a part thereof for frictionally holding the material of the hose or stocking as it is wrapped in the device, whereby to avoid pinching or otherwise injuring the material of which the garment is made; to provide a device which can be stamped out of sheet metal and formed into a strong, practical and relatively rigid device; to provide in a device of the kind referred to a hose engaging yoke pivotally connected at one end and at its other end having a finger or tongue with one free end to receive a collar or short sleeve of friction material upon which the edge of the garment or hose is to be placed and turned with said yoke to wind a part of the garment or hose around said yoke; and in general, to provide a simple, economical and practical holder of the character referred to.
Another object is to provide a construction in the hose engaging yoke whereby the friction collar carried thereby may be readily assembled thereon and securely retained in place against accidental removal from the yoke and afford a cushioning and gripping action on a fabric wound around the yoke.
Another object is to provide a construction in the friction collar whereby its cushioning and gripping action will be enhanced.
A further object is to provide a construction in the friction collar whereby it may be mounted on its supporting tongue without placing it under undue tension thereby increasing the life there- With the foregoing objects in view together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention is carried into effect as illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Referring now in detail to dicates generally a the drawing, A insupporting body which as here shown is formed of sheet metal folded upon itself with the folded end the a sleeve IS with one edge of reof rolled to form the rolled portion resting inwardly against the other edge thereof, as indicated at a. in Fig. 2. In forming the yoke B to provide the mounting for the collar C it is preferably stamped from a plate of sheet metal in a fashion to produce the side arms 22 and 23 of the yoke with out-turned ends at the open end of the yoke terminating in knobs 25 and 26 and to produce a plate-like projection 21 on the closed end of the yoke having formed therein a substantially rectangular opening 28 from one margin of which the finger 24 projects. In initially forming the yoke the finger 24 is preferably extended obliquely to the plane of the yoke so that its free end will project outwardly relative to the margin of the opening 28 whereby in assembling the collar C thereon the collar may be readily slipped over the finger from its free end, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5. On thus positioning the collar on the finger the latter is pressed inwardly to bring its free end to a fixed position within the space bounded by the margin of the opening 28, as particularly shown in Figs. 3 and 6', so that opposed side portions of the collar will then protrude from opposite sides of the projection 2? on the yoke as above described. The above described mode of assembly constitutes the subject of a co-pending application for Letters Patent filed by me the 1st day of September, 193? and bearing Serial Number 161,959.
The collar C may comprise a short length of rubber tubing of circular cross section, as particularly shown in Figs. and 11, either with the outer surface of the tubing smooth, as shown at c in Fig. 10, or corrugated or ribbed, as indicated at d in Fig. 11. With this type of collar the bore thereof is circular in cross section and of a diameter less than the width of the tongue 24 which latter is of rectangular cross section, so that on mounting the collar on the finger it will be expanded and placed under tension.
It has been found in practice that by placing the collar under tension its wearing qualities are decreased and accordingly a feature of the present invention resides in providing a construction whereby this objectionable feature may be obviated and which is accomplished by forming the collar with a rectangular bore 6, as shown in Fig. 12, to closely conform to the contour of the finger 24 and also to form the collar with substantially flat opposed side walls and g to snugly fit the opposed side margins of the opening 28 parallelwhereby the full inherent resiliency of the material of the collar will be afforded in effecting a cushioning and frictional engagement with the material of a garment wrapped therearound.
Referring to Figs. 7, 8, and 9, the garment or hose, or stocking is designated D, and is shown in light broken lines. Fig. 7 indicates the first step where the edge of the garment D is laid over the top side of the yoke B. The yoke with the garment held thereon is then turned through the main body A between the legs l8 and 59, as shown in Fig. 8, and continued on to the straight down position, as shown in Fig. 9. Thus the garment edge is wound in the yoke B as indicated by the light broken lines and engages both sides of the rubber friction element or collar C, which prevents its slipping and becoming disengaged.
Pull on the garment increases the contact with the collar C, and the garment is therefore firmly held and without any pinching or biting of the garment in a way which would injure the material. I am aware that the friction element or collar C can be of any suitable material to create the necessary friction and that it can be held in place in different ways, and I do not limit the invention to the showing, except as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a garment holder, a part for holding the garment consisting of a yoke-like body having two arms, a finger surrounded by the body portion, and a collar of flexible, friction material encircling said finger and being thicker than said body whereby to project at both sides thereof to engage a garment wound thereon.
2. A garment holder embodying two supporting arms and a body portion, said arms being adapted to be pivotally supported, and said body having an opening therethrough for holding friction material therein, and friction material in said opening protruding at the opposite sides of said body to frictionally engage a garment wrapped around said body.
3. In a garment supporter, a hose engaging yoke having an open end and a closed end, a support on which the open end of the yoke is pivotally carried, a projection on the closed end of the yoke having an opening therein, a finger on the inner periphery of said opening, and a resilient collar encircling said finger and projecting from opposite sides of said projection.
'4. In a garment supporter, a hose engaging yoke having an open end and a closed end, a support on which the open end of the yoke is pivotally carried, a projection on the closed end of the yoke having an opening therein, a finger on the inner periphery of said opening, and a resilient collar encircling said finger and protruding from opposite sides of said projection, said collar having corrugations on the opposed protruding faces thereof.
5. In a garment supporter, a hose engaging end and otally carried, a projection on the closed end of the yoke having an opening therein, a finger on the inner periphery of said opening, and a resilient collar encircling said finger and protruding from opposite sides of said projection, said finger being of substantially rectangular cross section, and said collar having its interior of rectangular cross section of dimensions to closely conform to said finger.
6. In a garment supporter, a hose engaging yoke having an open end and a closed end, a support on which the open end of the yoke is pivotally carried, an end projection on said yoke having an opening therein of rectangular outline, a finger of rectangular cross section projecting from one side margin of said opening, a collar of friction material arranged on said finger having its interior of rectangular cross section of dimensions to closely conform to said finger, said collar having diametrically opposed fiat faces extending along side margins of said opening, and having side faces intermediate the flat faces protruding at the opposite sides of said projection to frictionally engage a garment Wrapped around said projection.
