12 Claims.

My invention relates to wearing apparel and more particularly to wearing apparel in the general form of a vest.

An object of my invention is to provide a knitted wearing apparel in the general form of a vest.

Another object of my inventionis to provide for making a wearing apparel in the general form of a vest from a strip of material having portions which are angularly positioned relative to other portions of the strip.

Another object of my invention is to provide for making wearing apparel in the general form of a vest of a continuous strip of material; folded and joined in such fashion as to avoid substantially any Waste in the material.

Another object of my invention is to provide for making wearing apparel in the general form of a vest from a continuous strip of rack-knitted material having an angularly shaped central portion and two angular extension portions and having the intermediate part of the central portion and the two ends of the angular extensionportion secured together.

With reference to Figures 1 and 2, my wear ing apparel in the general form of a vest, may be made from a strip of material having portions angul'arly positioned relative to other-portions, as indicated generally by the reference character 29. This strip may be cut from a continuous strip of rack-knitted material as indicated in Figures 3 and 4. As illustrated, the continuous strip is zig-z'agged and the width measured transversely of its generallength is substantially everywhere the same, and the edges thereof have continuous selvageto prevent ravelling. The particular continuous strip here described and shown may be made on a flatbed knitting machine as followsfiFirst byracking" each course successively in one direction to make the first length and then byreversing the direction of the racking until next length is knitted. This same method is employed to make each 'suc cessive length. The machine is operated continuously and is so constructed that the rack,- ing can be reversed automatically. Therefore, in making my wearing apparel, in the general formof a vest, the strip is knitted to the desired shape and as will appear there is substantially no cloth or yarn wasted in making my wearing apdesignates a rack-knitted line between the two substantially

22 and 23. The front edge of the rhomboidal side portion 22 is designated by the reference character 34 and the rear edge by the reference character 38. The front edge of the rhomboidal side portion 23 is designated by the reference character 35 and the rear edge by 39. The rear edge of the intermediate sharply zig-zagged rack-knitted portion 25 is designated by the reference character 48 and the front edge by 36. The rear edge of the in termediate sharply zig-zagged rack-knitted material 26 is designated by the reference character 4| and the front edge by 31. The line 42, having the

44 and 45, designates the severed end of the substantially rhomboidal extension portion 2| and the line 43 having the ends 46 and 4! designates the severed end of the substantially rhomboidal extension portion 24. The front edge of the substantial rhomboidal extension portion 2| is designated by the reference character 50 and the front edge of the substan tially rhomboidal extension portion 24 is designated by the reference character 5|.

In assembly of the severed strip 29 of Figure 4 into a wearing apparel having the general form of a vest, the portion of the strip in the region .where the inner ends of the two substantially

22 and 23 are connected together, fit the back below the neck and the shoulders. The remaining portion of each of the two substantially

rhomboidal side portions

22 and 23 fit respectively over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part ofthe chest. The portion of the strip 20 in the region of the intermediate sharply zig-z'a-gged

As illustrated in Figure 5, sections 6| and 62 are cut away, and the cut away edges formed thereby are joined making the seams 59 and 60 as shown in Figure 2 of the. drawings. This is done in order to make a good fitting garment. The seams may be produced by a sewing operation, which has combined therewith an overcasting operation to produce a smooth job. The front of my wearing apparel in the general form of a vest, may beheld together in the usual manner by means of button holes 51 and the buttons 58. In the making of my wearing apparel in the general form of a vest in Figures 1 and 2, there is substantially no waste to the material, except the two sections 6| and 62 which are cut out to make a good fitting garment. The

34 and 35 may be rolled as indicated in Figures 1 and 2 to give a neat appearance.

In Figures 6, 7, 8, and 9, I show a modified form of my invention, particularly in the manner in which the several portions of the strip 26 are joined together. In making the garment shown in Figures 6 and 1, the strip 26 in Figure 8 is used, being thesame strip as shown in Figure 4, but the angular ends of the substantially rhomboidal extension portions 2| and 24 are cut off as indicated by the

65 and 66, respectively, making the corners 45 and 61 and 4'! and 68. These two severed ends 65 and 66 are joined as indicated in Figures 7 and 9, making the seam 69 and causing the

corners

45 and 41 to coincide at the lower edge of the back band 'of the garment and the corners 61 and 68 to coincide at the upper edge of the back band of the garment. The tip 32 of the central back portion of the substantially

22 and 23, is then joined to the back band in the region of the corners 61 and 68, making the seams Ill and II. This modified form exposes a portion of the back of the person which adds to the novelty of the general lines of vests embodying my invention. Also it is to be observed in the making of the vest shown in Figures 6 and 7 that there is substantially no waste in the material except the two angular ends which are cut off the substantial rhomboidal extensions 2| and 24.

In Figures 10, 11, 12, and 13 I show a further modified form of my invention, particularly with reference to' a modification of the general arrangement and shape of the strip 14 of Figure 12 from which the vests are made. In this modified form, an intermediate sharply zig-zagged central portion 15 is rack-knitted between the inner ends of the two substantial

22 and 23. The front edge of the intermediate portion 15 is indicated by the reference character 1'! and the rear edge by the reference character 16. The rack-knitted line between the substantially rhomboidal portions 2| and 22 is indicated by the reference character 18 and the rack-knitted line between the substantially

rhomboidal portions

23 and 24 is indicated by the reference character 19. Each end of the substantial rhomboidal extension portions 2| and 24 of Figure 12 are cut off the same as they were in Figure 8.

The two severed ends 65 and 66 are joined as indicated in Figures 11 and 13, making the seam 89, and causing the

corners

45 and 41 to coincide at the lower edge of the back band of the garment and the corners 6! and 68 to coincide at the upper edge of the back band of the garment. The rear edge 16 of the intermediate portion 15 is then joined to the upper edge of the band of the garment, making a seam 8|. In the making of the vest shown in Figures 10 and 11, there is substantially no waste in the material except the two angular ends which are cut off the substantially rhomboidal extensions 2| and 24.

In Figures 14, 15, 16, and 17, I show a further modified form of my invention, and particularly with reference to a modification of the general arrangementand shape of the strip 83 of Figure 16 from which the vests are made. In this form, the substantially

22 and 23 are the same as shown in Figures 4 and 8, but the extensions, identified in Figure 16 as 84 and 85 are sharply zig-zagged and extend substantially horizontal from the ends of the

rhomboidal side portions

22 and 23.

The front edge of the extension 84 is indicated by the reference character 88 and the rear edge 86, and the front edge of the extension 85 by 89 and the rear edge by 81. A portion of the end 90 of the extension 84 is joined to the edge 38, making a seam 92, and a portion of the end 9| of the extension 85 is joined to the edge 39, making a seam 93. The remaining portions of the ends 98 and 9| are joined, making a seam 94. I As illustrated, sections and 96 are cut away, and the cut away edges formed thereby are joined making the

91 and 98 shown under the arms. In the making of my wearing apparel in Figures 14. and 15, there is substantially no waste of the material except the cut away

95 and 96, which is very small. In all the forms of my garments, they may be held together on a person by button holes 51 and buttons 58. Thus, it is seen that I haveproduced a garment in the general form of a vest from a strip of material; folded and joined in such fashion as to avoid substantially any waste in the material.

Although I have described my invention with a certain degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure has been made only by way of example and. that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from. the spirit and the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.

I claim as my invention:

1. A wearing apparel comprising a strip angularly shaped to form a vest, said strip having a substantially V-shaped central portion and twoextension portions, said substantially V-shap'ed central portion having two sides connected together at their inner ends, each of said extension portions being respectively and angularly connected to the ends of the sides of the substantially V-shaped central portion, the portion of the strip in the region where the inner ends of the two sides of the substantially V-shaped central portion are connected together fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders, the remaining portion of each of said two sides of the 7 substantially V-shaped central portion fitting respectively over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the portion of the strip in the regions where each of the said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the sides of the substantially V-shaped central portion fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining portion of each of said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and being connected to each other and to the said portion of the strip fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders.

2. A wearing apparel comprising a strip angularly shaped to form a vest, said strip having a central portion and two extension portions, said central portion having two sides angularly connected together at their inner ends, each of said extension portions being respectively and angularly connected to the ends of the sides of the central portion, the portion of the strip in the region l where the inner ends of the two sides of the central portion are connected together fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders, the remaining portion of each of said two sides of the central portion fitting respectively over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the portion of the strip in the regions where each of the said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the sides of the central portion fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining portion of each of said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and being connected to each other and to the said portion of the strip fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders.

3. A wearing apparel comprising a strip angularly shaped to form a vest, said strip having a central portion, two interconnecting portions, and two extension portions, said central portion having two sides angularly connected together at their inner ends, each of said interconnecting portions; having an inner end respectively and angularly connected to the ends of the sides of the central portion, each of said extension portions having an end respectively and angularly connected to the outer ends of the interconnecting portions, the portion of the strip in the region where the inner ends of the two sides of the central portion are connected together fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders, the remainingportion of each of said two sides of the central portion fitting respectively over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the portion of the strip in the region of the interconnecting portions fitting a lower part of the chest, and each of the said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and having their outer ends connected to each other and to the said portion of the strip fitting the back below the neck and shoulders.

A wearing apparel comprising a strip angularly shaped to form a'vest, said strip having a central portion and two extension portions, said central portion having an intermediate portion and two sides, the inner end of each of the two sidesbeing angularlyand respectivelyconnected to each end of the intermediate portion, the inner end of each of said extension portions being respectively and angularly connected to the ends of the sides of the central portion, the portion of the strip in the region of the intermediate portion fitting the back below the neck, each of said two sides of the central portion passing over each shoulder respectively and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the portion of the strip in the region whereeach of the said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the sides of the central portion fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining portion of each of said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and being connected to each other and to the said intermediate portion fitting the back below the neck.

5. A wearing apparel comprising a strip angularly shaped to form a vest, said strip having a substantially V-shaped central portion and two extension portions, said substantially V-shaped central portion having two substantially rhomboidal sides connected together at their inner ends, each of said extension portions being respectively and angularly connected to the ends of the two substantially rhomboidal sides of the substantially V-shaped central portion, the portion of the strip in the region where the inner ends of the two substantially rhomboidal sides of the substantially V-shaped central portion are connected together fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders, the remaining portion of each of said two substantially rhomboidal sides" of the substantially V-shaped central portion fitting respectively over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the portion of the strip in the regions where each of the said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the substantially rhomboidal sides of the substantially V-shaped central portion fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining portion of each of said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and being connected to each other and to the said portion of the strip fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders.

6. A wearing apparel comprising a strip angularly shaped to form a vest, said strip having a central portion and two extension portions, said central portion having an intermediate portion the upper part of the chest, the portion of the strip in the region where each of the said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the substantially rhomboidal sides of the central portion fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining portion of each of said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and being connected to each other and to the said intermediate portion fitting the back below the neck.

7. The process of making a vest which comprises forming a strip having a fiat generally V-shaped central portion and two angular extension portions, and joining the intermediate part of the central portion to the two end edges of the extension portion.

8. A wearing apparel comprising a continuous strip shaped to form a vest, said strip having a central generally V-shaped portion and two extension portions angularly connected to the ends of the central portion, the intermediate part of the central portion fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders and the remaining part of the central portion fitting over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the part of the strip in the region where each of said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the central portion fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining part of each of said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and being connected to each other.

9. A wearing apparel comprising a continuous strip shaped to form a vest, said strip having a generally V-shaped central portion and two extension portions angularly connected to the ends of the central portion, the intermediate part of the central portion fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders and the remaining part of the central portion fitting over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the part of the strip in the region where each of said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the central portion fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining part of each of said extension portions passing under the arms respectively and being connected to each other and to the said intermediate part of the central portion fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders.

10. A wearing apparel comprising a. knitted material shaped to form a vest, said material having a, central portion with two spaced sides and two extension portions angularly and respectively connected to the ends of the said sides, the intermediate part of the central portion fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders, and the spaced sides respectively fitting over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the part of the material in the region where each of the said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the spaced sides fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining part of said extension portions being connected together and fitting under the arms and around the back.

A wearing apparel comprising a knitted material shaped to form a vest, said material having a central portion with two spaced sides and two extension portions angularly and respectively connected to the ends of the said sides, the intermediate part of the central portion fitting the back below the neck and the shoulders, and the spaced sides respectively fitting over each shoulder and downwardly over the upper part of the chest, the part of the material in the region where each of the said extension portions is respectively connected to the ends of the spaced sides fitting a lower part of the chest, the remaining part of said extension portions being connected together and fitting under the arms and around the back, and being connected to said intermediate part of the central portion fitting the back below the neck and shoulders.

12. A Wearing apparel comprising a knitted material shaped to form a vest, said material having a central portion and an extension portion, the intermediate part of the central portion fitting the back below the neck and shoulders, said central portion having two spaced sides fitting the shoulders and the upper part of the chest, said extension portion having a first part fitting a lower part of the chest, two portions constituting a second part fitting the sides of the body under the arms and a third part fitting the back, the third part of the extension portion fitting the back being connected to the central portion and each of the two portions of the second part of the extension portion fitting the sides of the body under the arms being respectively an angular continuation of the said spaced side which fits over the shoulder on the same side of the body.
