Description

B.HANDFORTH. shade -Fix ture No.'211,996.. Ptnted Feb. 4; i879.
UNITED STATES PATENT .FFICE.
BENJAMIN HANDFORTH, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHADE-FIXTURES.
Specificntion fonning part of Letters Patent No. 211,996, dated Fehruary 4, 1879 application filed December 19, 1878.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN HANDFORTH, of Hoboken, Hudson eounty, New Jersey, have invented anew and usetnl Improvement in ShadeFixtnres, which invention is fully set forth in the followin g specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g draWings, in which Figure 1 represents a top view of a shaderoller and its brackets embraeing myinvention. Fig. 2 is afront view of the same. Fig. 3 shows the inner face of one of the braekets. Fig. 4; is an end view of the roller, Fig. 5 shows the position of the dog when the roller is being removed. Figs. 6 and 7 show modifications of my invention.
The aim of my invention is to produce a simple and effective means for antomatically arresting a spring shade-rofler when the same is removed from its brackets to prevent unwinding of its spring, and for antomatically releasing the saine when it is put in place.
11: consists in the eombination of a spring shaderoller having one or more stop-pins projecting from one end, a non-rotating arbor soeketed in the end of said roller, a dog pivoted to said arbor and arranged to swing to and from the end of the roiler and path of the stop-pins, and a braoket slotted to receive the nonrotating arbor and provided With projections or cams one of whieh is arranged to throw the dog ont of the path of the pins of the rolier when the said roller is placed in its brackets, and the others to throw said dog into the path of the said pins when the roller is withdrawn from its braekets.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a spring shade-roller of ordinary construction, the same being provided With a oylindrieal gudgeon, B, at one end and a polygonal arbor 0, at its other end.
1) designates a bracket having a hole to reeeive the gndgeon B, and E is a braoket h&V- ing a slot to reoeive the arbor 0. When the roller is hung in these brackets the gndgeon B tnrns With the roller, while the arbor 0 remains stationary.
From that end of the roller A:containing the arbor C projeot stop-pins a, (one or more,) While on the arbor adjacent to said end of the roller is pivoted a dog, F, so that the latter ean readily be .brought into and ont of the path of the stop-pins, whereby the roller is arrested or released, as the case may be. I constrnct the braeket E t0 prodnoe this 1novement of the dog F automatieally and at the proper times, and eau aoe0mplish the desired resnlt in diffrent ways.
In the example *shown in Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the dog is aetuated by means of two beve1ed lngs, b c, whieh are sitnated on opposite sides of the slot in the bracket E, and one of whieh brings said dog to aninner position, as shown in Fig. 5, whenthe roller is lifted or removed from the braekets, while the other brings the dog to an outerposition, and retains the same in this position, as shown in Fig. 1, when the roller is put in place.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown two modifi cations in the construction of the braoket E, one of whioh, Fig. 6, consists in curving the bracket on one side of its slot, and providing the dog F With a notch to engage With the onrved part thereof, while the other, Fig. 7 consists in enrving the edges of the slot and arranging the dog F to protrnde throngh the same.
WVhat I daim as new, and desire to secnre by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the spring shade-roller, having one or more stop-pins projecting from one end, the non-rotating arbor O, having the dog F pivoted thereto to swing to and from the end of the roller on opposite sides of the arbor, and the slotted braoket E, having the projections :01 cams I) a, one of which is arranged to throw the said dog toward the roller and cause it to stand in the path of the pins when the roller is removed from the braoket,
and the other of whieh throws the dog ont of the path of the pins when the said roller is plaoed inits braokets, snbstantially as desoribed. .7
In testimony whereof I have herennto set my hand and seal this 17th day of December, 1878.
BENJ. HANDFORTH. [L. s.} Witnesses W. HAUFF, GRAS. WAHLERS.
