2 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in garment hangers of the type in which a pair of clamping members or jaws are hinged together and held in clamping position by a lever.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device of this character with a lever which is curved and twisted about itself in a manner to form a hook of novel construction for suspension on a rod or other support.
w Other objects of the invention will be apparent from a study of the following description and drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary View of one of the clamping rod members which is engaged by the hook portion.
The jaws or clamping members I are made preferably of strips of wood lined with felt pads 2 on their inner surfaces. The clamping members l are connected by a hinge constructed of small rods, the axis of the hinge being shown at 3. There are two such rods 4 and 5 having their ends received in openings formed in the clamping members i. The rod 5 is bent around the rod 4 so as to form a bearing for the rod 4 when the clamping members I are moved into open position. The rods 4 and 5 have formed therein U-shaped portions 6 and 1 intermediate their ends, the U-shaped portion 1 providing an axis for a lever 8.
The lever 8 is formed of a rod bent intermediate its ends to form the curved portions I! and I2, constituting a hook l0. Extending from the curved-elements H and I2 are shank portions l3 and M. The shank I3 is formed into a coil l5 around the shank i l in such a manner as to securely hold the shank portions together. Extending from the coil l5 of the shank portion l3 and the shank M is a pair of angular leg portions It. The lower portions ll of the angular leg portions l6 terminate in eyes l8 journaled about the U-shaped portion 1. The U-shaped portion 6 is provided with notches IQ for receiving the angles 28 of the leg portions of the lever 8. When the device is to be used the lever 8 is swung downwardly disengaging the legs Hi from the U-shaped member 6 thus allowing the clamping members I, to be spread apart for the insertion of trousers or other garments to be clamped between said clamping members I. When the lever B is swung upwardly the legs l6 engage the U-shaped portion 6 thereby bringing the clamping members I into clamping position. Lever 8 comes to rest when the angles 20 engage in the notches IS in the U-shaped portion 6. The hook In of the lever 8 is used for hanging the device from a suitable support.
I claim: 10 1. In a hanger of the type comprising a pair of hingedly connected rods including substantially U-shaped intermediate portions and coacting jaws on said rods, a lever for releasably securing the jaws in closed position, said lever comprising 5 a single length of wire folded upon itself at an intermediate point and formed to provide a hook, a pair of parallel shanks extending from said hook, a coil on one of said shanks encircling the other shank, and a pair of diverging legs extending downwardly from said coil and said other shank, and lateral parallel extensions on said legs terminating in eyes journalled on one of said U-shaped portions, said legs being slidably engage-able with the other of said U-shaped portions for closing and holding the jaws in closed position.
2. In a hanger of the type comprising a pair of hingedly connected rods including substantially U-shaped intermediate portions and 00- acting jaws on said rods, a lever for releasably securing the jaws in closed position, said lever comprising a single length of wire folded upon itself at an intermediate point and formed to provide a hook, a pair of parallel shanks extending from said hook, a coil on one of said shanks encircling the other shank, and a pair of diverging legs extending downwardly from said coil and said other shank, lateral parallel extensions on said legs terminating in eyes journaled on one of said U-shaped portions, said legs being slid-ably engageable with the other of said U-shaped portions for closing and holding the jaws in closed position, said other U-shaped portion having spaced notches therein for the reception of the legs when the jaws are in closed position.
