2 Claims.
The present invention relates to dispensing car- 4tons and particularly to a carton of the type for containing rolls of paper and the like, such for instance, as rolls of waxed paper from which the paper is dispensed in web form and torn in pieces of desired lengths against a cutter.
An object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing package adapted to hold a single roll of paper or other material so as to protect the same from dust and to permit the ready withdrawal of the paper web.
The invention further contemplates a package made from a single blank of material, which is scored and folded to provide a package of the requisite form and construction.
An important object of the invention is to provide a carton having a hinged front panel so as to permit ready grasping of the free edge of the paper web.
A further object of the invention is to provide a package which is economical to manufacture, easy to assemble, and eillcient in use.
The above, other and further objects of the invention, will be apparent from the following description, the accompanying drawing and ap'- pended claims. y
Embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing and the views thereof are as follows:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the box illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmental perspective view of one end of the box assembled except for the insertion of the end tabs.
Figure 4 is a fragmental perspective view of the box showing the hinge structure of the front panel.
Figure 5 is a plan View of the blank from which the carton is made.
The blank is cut and scored to provide a top wall I3. rear wall I2, the bottom wall II, the front wall I4, a like panel I5, and a hinged panel I0, having alxed thereto a metal tear off strip 22.
The top wall I3 is provided with end flaps I1 which are scored to fold along lines l and'cut yalong lines 9. A
The bottom II is also provided with end flaps I6 which i'old along scored lines 8.
The front panel I4 is provided with end tabs Il which are scored to fold-along lines 'B and these tabs have, in turn, 'tucks I9 which fold alongscored lines with respect to the tabs (Cl. 20G- 58) I8. Tabs I1 and I8 are separated by cut lines 9. y The front panel I4 is provided at its ends with slots 25 for receiving the hook portions 2| carried by the hinged panel I0.

The hinged panel I0 is scored at lines 3| .to f provide locking tongue portions 20 having hook portions 2|. A tear-olf blade 22 is secured to the hinged panel I0 so that its serrated edge will have the points of the serrations extending slightly beyond the edge of said panel I0. The tearoi blade may be fastened by any suitable means to the outside or inside of the panel I0.
'I'he method of making a box from the blank illustrated in Figure 5 is as follows:
The blank is folded into box-like form by bending the panels II, I2, I3, I4 and I5along the score lines I, 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively. The dike panel I 5 is folded so as to be positioned inside the box so formed and in contact with the inner surface of the bottom wall II as shown in Figure 3. By positioning panel .I5 in this manner a dike or passage is formed through which the sheet of waxed paper passes as illustrated in Figure 2. Theweight of the roll 24 is applied on the panel I5 which in turn is exerted on the waxed paper web beneath it. This arrangement serves to apply a frictional force on the web as it is being withdrawn from the box thereby ailordng a smooth withdrawal of the web from the box. The panel I5 also holds the end of the web after a piece of the web is severed on the tear-oi! blade 22 thereby preventing the end of the web from being withdrawn inside the box.
After the panels are folded up into box formation with the roll of paper inside the end tabs I6 and I1, respectively, of the top and bottom panels are folded in overlapping relation. The end tabs I8 of the front panel I4 are then folded over and the tucks I9 are inserted into locking arrangement. The hooked tongues 20 of the hinged panels I0 are then inserted through the slotted openings 25 as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
The hooked tongues 20 permit the panel I0, carrying the cutter blade 22, to hinge outwardly along score line I for a limited distance as shown by the dotted line I0 in Figure 2. When the hooked portions or stops 2l abut the front wall I4 as shown in Figure 4 they act as stops to prey vent further outward swinging of the hinged panel I0. y
It is to 'be understood that the invention is not restricted to the specific means disclosed for limiting the outward swing of the hinged panel. Any other suitable means such as for example 66 pieces of flexible tape or wire attached to the box and the panel may be used if desired.
'I'he hinged panel I0 provides means for securing ready access to the end 23 of the web after it is cut oi along the cutter blade 22. By inserting the thumb between the front wall I4 and the hinged panel I0 it is possible to grasp the end of the web and then to draw out the desired length of web. The end of the web will not wind back inside the box as the web is held by the dike panel I5.
In using the carton it is simply held, say in the left hand, with the bottom l l resting against the palm, the left thumb on the top I3 and the flngers resting lightly on hinged panel l0. IThe thumb of the right hand is then inserted inside the hinged panel I 0 so as to cause it to swing outwardly as shown in Figure 2 whereupon the end of the web 23 can be readily grasped and drawn out to the required length and then cut off on the cutter blade.
The present carton is designed for use but once, and when the roll 24 has been exhausted the carton is thrown away. If desired, however, a new roll can be readily replaced in the box.
The box made in accordance with this invention is strong and rigid enough for all purposes intended, pleasing in appearance, and one which lends itself very readily for use in connection with rolled wax paper or other types of paper. The box is securely fastened together without the use of glue, paste, stickers, or like means thus making assembly rapid and economical.
It is to be understood that many changes may be made 'in the proportion of parts and equivalents may be substituted or used without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A box for a supply of a rolled web formed from a single blank of material, said blank being scored and foldable into box-like form with two panels in overlapping relation to provide a passage for the withdrawal of the web from the box, a. wall adjacent said overlapped panels having slots at each end thereof, a hinged panel adjacent the overlapped panels to permit ready grasping of the end of the web after passing through said passage, saidhinged panel being provided with folded hooked portions at the ends thereof inserted in said slots for limiting the outward swinging thereof.
2. A bo'x for dispensing a roll of web material comprising front, top, back and bottom walls, said top and bottom walls having end tabs, said front wall having end tabs and tuck-in flaps and slots adjacent the end tabs, said tuck-in flaps being inserted between the back wall and the overlapped end tabs of the topand bottom walls, said front wall having a panel hinged thereto and positioned in overlapping relation with the bottom wall to provide a passage for withdrawal of the web, said bottom wall having an outwardly hinged panel overlapping the front wall, said hinged panel being provided with stop portions inserted in said slots for engaging the front wall for limiting the outward swing of said hinged panel.
